One of the biggest lessons from Bloodraven’s backstory is that he’s consistently willing to do bad things for the greater good. At the Redgrass Field, he killed his own half-brother and nephews, becoming an “accursed” “kinslayer” to save the realm from rebellion. During the Great Spring Sickness, he burned piles of human corpses along with “A quarter of the city” to prevent the spread of disease. At the Great Council of 233, he offered Aenys Blackfyre safe conduct, then dishonourably executed him, to prevent further Blackfyre rebellion – Bloodraven “contended that he had sacrificed his own personal honor for the good of the realm”. And indeed, he probably mashes Jojen into a paste and feeds him to Bran to wake Bran’s magic power. Over and over again, Bloodraven is willing to do terrible things for the sake of the greater good. So in the face of the Others and the Long Night, there’s probably nothing he wouldn’t do – nothing too evil or monstrous – if it helped save the living from the dead.

Another undercurrent to Bloodraven’s backstory is magic. Did he and Shiera use sorcery to augment their spying? Did Bloodraven use magic to assassinate Quentyn Ball? Did Bloodraven and King Aerys I study prophecy and magic together? Is Maynard Plumm in The Mystery Knight actually a glamoured/skinchanged Bloodraven? Does Bloodraven’s Blackwood and Targaryen blood give him the magic powers of both the first men and Valyria, ice and fire? Does his raven-shaped birthmark and weirwood longbow indicate an early connection to the old gods? The answer to all these questions, I think, is “probably”.

I’ve got Bloodraven’s Targaryen backstory pretty much figured out. So now we’re moving on to his role as the three-eyed crow, which is where things get more… speculative. There are very few hard facts to go on here, so it’ll be fun to try to shape some sense out of all the darkness and magic and mystery.

Cheers!

And still you won't join facebook, Doomsday. Sigh. Did you see the finished hello rock project?

Really looking forward to this one - so many bits of evidence scattered across books and series. I’m especially interested in the possible connections between Jon and Bloodraven - both Lord Commander, both bastards, both wargs...then there’s Ghost looking like him. That’s gotta have some significance at some stage.

Fabian Kester

I will watch this a thousand times and one.

Question: Bloodraven is the guy who’s slowly becoming part of the tree, right? I guess I just find it weird that he was a Targaryen instead of a mystical, ancient elder of a peoples from that area or something. He’s a greenseer like Bran, right? Why would a Targaryen have that power? How did he end up there in the tree, with all these magical connections to the old gods? I’m sure you’ll answer this in your video :)

Rikke Holmberg

I am anxiously waiting for Shift to explain exactly this to me. I never got that. Maybe the answers are in the big book, that I didn't finish reading yet.

Fred Jones

I'm going to learn so much from this one. Thanks Shift.

The Hello Rock video is a thing of beauty, Rikke.

Fabian Kester

I think his powers come from his mother‘s side. She was a Blackwood who are the only house in the Riverlands to still worship the Old Gods. They were expelled from the North by the Kings of Winter and their castle is called Raventree because they have an ancient Weirwood tree where massive flocks of ravens gather.

Once again I must bow to your knowledge of ASOIAF trivia, Fabian.

Laura Viniconis

Ok I'm officially excited for this video!

Kelly Theobald

Seriously! Thanks, Fabian :D I’m looking forward to seeing that with more context too. Are you still top in the world at GOT trivia??

Kelly Theobald

If not now, when?? If not us, who?? 😢

I’m more amped up for this video then any video outside of aCoKaBRiDGe based tomfoolery. Fuck yeah. I’ve been skull-fucking B.Rave’s backstory as well and we are on the same page. It’s very fitting he places his personal sigil on smoke grey considering he might be the “greyest” character we get to play with. And yes , he most certainly without a doubt Maynard Plumm. Sidenote~ He gets sent to the wall with Egg’s first official decree as king, it’s all speculative at this point, but considering what we know do you think it’s possible he “arranged” his taking of the black ? If he knew something was gonna go down up there he could have told Egg to send him. This would help Egg solidify his reign, save some face for House Targaryen, appeal to Egg’s learned sense of what honor means ( Dunk’s influence) and also put him in a position to wage war against the coming long night. All very speculative.

Jelly Tadpole- Bloodraven is half Targaryen and half Blackwood. The Blackwoods are an ancient house with strong ties to the Old Gods. Strange right ? A character that is half Targaryen and Half Blood of the First Men? Sound familiar?

Ben Androvich

Is the Song of Ice and Fire really about Bloodraven or Jon? I’ve been obsessed with Bloodraven’s backstory, I wish we knew more than the general overview we know now. Maybe this video can shed some light for us!

Alt Shift X

Yeah with so much of Bloodraven's story, speculation is all we have... I think it's entirely possible that Bloodraven, Aeg and Aemon all discussed prophecy together, which might have motivated BR and Aemon's joining the Watch. Would love to know what BR and Aemon's relationship was like up on the Wall... So many questions, so few answers.

Kelly Theobald

Thanks, Oyster! Everything is becoming more clear
