This video's pretty critical of Maeve. Over the last couple episodes, she's used her voice power to indiscriminately kill like a hundred hosts – couldn't she have just commanded them freeze motor functions, or surrender? As viewers, we're probably meant to just let the violence wash over us, and not think about it too much. But part of the point of Season 1 was to make us question dehumanising violence against hosts. It seems so contradictory for Maeve to grieve Sakura, while remorselessly slaughtering others... Or does this just come off as pedantic?

Also, are any of you subscribed to the Westworld email newsletter, that sends little weekly tidbits about WW? If so, could you please forward recent emails to alt.shift.x@gmail.com? Apparently it's too late to sign up ourselves 🤦

Aiming to get the video done Thursday.

Thanks!

I think it’s a good point to bring up. I think it’s good thought provoking material, & I do think the show has conditioned us not to care about it because they are nameless hosts

I think Maeve is VERY protective of Akane/Sakura, much like she’s protective of her daughter. She slaughtered the other samurai there because of her overprotective nature. That said, she’s still learning what it is like to be human or achieve human consciousness. I’m willing to giver her a pass due to this and the fact that the hosts can be revived.

How would the main shogun characters (and the narrative as a whole) reacted to hosts freezing up? It's not clear to what extent they are fully aware of who they are. Perhaps this was done to respect the Japanese culture of the time where it was more honourable to die in battle (or via Seppuku) than fall into the hands of your enemy? This brings up another good question: how and who can freeze host motor functions? We see Delores freeze Bernarnold's motor functions (in some yet to be clarified context). Can hosts freeze hosts motor functions? Do they need to be 'awake'? Wasn't the freezing of host motor functions 'disabled'?

I definitely think Maeve's violence is worth discussing. She's got this fierce mother-bear thing going on. Is that programming? Along the lines of animal instinct? To what degree is that "organic" and to what degree is it a matter of choice? I also think it's worth noting how Akane says something like "we need to get out of here before this darkness eats us all alive." What is this darkness exactly? Has it already consumed Maeve?
