Hey guys, here's something a bit different –

This is a pilot/draft episode for an Alt Shift Book Club podcast. The idea is to analyse a cool short story each month, in a tone somewhere in-between Alt Shift X and Alt Schwift X.

This episode is about Salman Rushdie's short story At the Auction of the Ruby Slippers – I'm releasing it just to BTS Patrons and a few others, and would love some feedback:

Would you listen to more Alt Shift Book Club episodes like this?

Should it be more tightly scripted and edited, so it's not so rambly?

What other stories would you like to have analysed?

Thanks for checking it out! Also make sure you've voted in the GOT and new series Patron votes – they'll be closing soon (:

Cheers

About to go listen and have the best morning ever thank you.

Would I listen to more: umm duh. Of course these videos always perk my interest more when it’s a book I’ve read but I still enjoy hearing discuss things you enjoy, finding the points the author is trying to make, giving your opinions, etc. Should it be more scripted: I don’t think you should script stuff like this out. I think it makes the video more personal between you & your audience when it’s just you talking into your mic talking off the cuff rather than reading off a script. It’s like we are all friends in the same room talking, even though none of us have ever met you lol. This is one of the main reasons I love GoT Abridged, aside from it being hilarious. Other stories: idk, can’t think of anything off the top of my head right now.

Scripted vs. Unscripted: this was a nice middle ground. I'd vote for slightly less scripted. Not looking for tangents and distractions, but a more conversational and casual tone. Reading full sentences sounds like AltShift on a business phone call.

BOOK CLUB!!!! Yesss it’s finally happening. 🤗 Loved this pilot. Here are my thoughts: -I love the tone and feel of it. I don’t think it needs more editing and structure. You’re at your best when you freestyle it, so I’d hate to see you limit yourself with a script. -At first, I was disappointed that it was a short story (I dislike them) that I’ve never heard of, and I was going to throw enthusiastic support for a novel...but now I’m changing my mind. I’m liking getting exposed to new, intellectual stuff. -Some of the best parts were applying the story to the modern day. I liked your Twitter comments. (Twitter is starting to get unbearable 🙄) -I especially liked your emphasis on the author and his life. More of that! -One small suggestion: I would love to hear a bit more of the actual text, a few sentences or something. With Schwift, I really like when you comment on GRRM’s writing style and point out specifically well written or poorly written lines. Food for thought. Overall, it was interesting and very well done! I’d be excited to hear you examine some poetry, too.

I liked it! Thought I wish you picked a story I knew... It would be tough for me to form any opinions without actually reading the original story! Also I would suggest, as this is a book club, at the end of your video to let us know what story is next. That way if its something we haven't read or want to refresh for better discussion, we can! Monthly seems like the perfect timeline for this! Stay unscripted my friend! Your opinions, thoughts and comments come out more personal when unscripted! Much better for discussion with us the audience!

This was lovely! What a great pilot episode! -I like the intro and outdo music you chose. -This was the Goldilocks zone, tighter than Schwift X but looser than Shift X. I would really hate for you to try to script it more. -I think this felt like a book club. In that it was comfortable and relaxed but still interesting with lots of room for discussion. -I like the idea of short stories and poems because then we aren’t tied to one book. Especially if you’d only being doing a chapter a month. It would be frustrating to only do one chapter than leave a book behind, but it would also be frustrating to drag out a book for that long. Your workload is already heavy (especially come 2019 when GoT is back) so I hope once a month would be a manageable addition to your schedule.

I'm assuming that we should read this story before listening. Listened to the intro and it sounds awesome. I'm going to go read the book before I listen to the rest.

Whoops, just discovered that it requires a subscription to Granta. O well, it'd be great to have a chance to read the material being discussed.

Very nice balance, congrats on the pilot! I highly reccomend any story by Ted Chiang. "Story of Your Life" is probably the most well-known because it was adapted in to the film Arrival, but all of his stories are right up your alley.

Let me see. Would I listen to more of my favourite voice in the world intelligently talk about literature while sounding like he actually enjoys it? Tough call ... I loved everything about this. Never actually read Rushdie before though he’s been on my TBR forever. Also not that familiar with short stories generally, but the format definitely makes sense here. I agree that if you want to spark discussions, it would be preferable if you announced the story beforehand to give us a chance to read it. Definitely don’t make it more scripted and don’t be afraid to show even more of your personality and the quirky sense of humour we know you possess. This was not even close to rambly. It was very clear and concise. Right, I’m off to read me some Rushdie. Thank you for doing this.

Bill Miller

Going to read it first before listening, but really looking forward to it. I loved "haroun and the sea of stories" by him. Give us a heads up on what to read before the podcast! :)

Thanks for starting this podcast. I hope you keep doing it -- monthly seems about right. I read my first Rushdie novel several months ago -- Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights. I really enjoyed it. Why did I wait so long? At the Auction of the Ruby Slippers has a lot of similarities. I very much enjoyed the "book club" tone of your podcast. I've always enjoyed reading books and discussing them with friends or in literature classes, but disliked writing about them. So I'm all for your unscripted approach.

Shiera Seastar

Love Salman Rushdie, good choice. Hopefully it will expose his writing to more people who might be interested in picking up his other works (like Midnight's Children and the Ground Beneath Her Feet). I think I differ in that I enjoy the more structured approach of Shift, whereas sometimes Schwift can be more rambling and tangential. Literature can be boring to the listener sometimes, so it may help keep attention glued if it's a summation rather than a list of descriptions? You have a natural gift of rhythm and composition which makes your videos such a pleasure to hear/watch. But the drawback is that structure is more work to prepare. So I guess it's up to you, because enjoying your work is the most important aspect of 'Tubing lol.

I feel book clubs are a way to expand a person’s interest and awareness in literature. With that said, I am mostly interested short stories I have not yet read. But, if I could expand someone else’s perspective with a suggestion, it would be any of the stories from Ray Bradbury’s “Illustrated Man.” Thank you for this channel and I’m looking forward to what happens next.

Alt Shift X

The story's also published in the collection East, West if you wanna pick that up. And you could probably find it free online somewhere if you searched around.. I'm hoping to work something out with Audible or someone, to provide legit copies of the stories to podcast listeners..

Alt Shift X

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback, everyone! We'll tidy up this episode's audio and visuals a bit, and work towards making this a regular thing (:

Alt Shift X

Yeah, that's exactly the reasoning re: short stories. Doing a full book would take forever, while short stories give flexibility and variety. I want this show to explore a really wide range of different material (:

Alt Shift X

Thanks Kelly! Yeah it'd be good to have a subtle audio effect to indicate when I'm reading directly from the text..

Alt Shift X

Yeah it's a delicate balance, re: scripting/tone. I want to foster that chill friendly vibe, but also wanna get points across without getting bogged down in umms aahs and tangents.. This ep is probably close to the right balance.
