So currently, the Alt Shift X logo is some Times New Roman I chucked together in 2014. The video thumbnails are black Times New Roman on white backgrounds, the channel banner is a confusing mess:

I love this old branding like a beloved old car – it's familiar and nostalgic, but it's bloody ugly and it's leaking oil and the airbags don't work and it doesn't really get you anywhere anymore.

So we're working with a graphic designer to make something better – a sleeker, newer car that better communicates what Alt Shift X is about. Here's a rough concept:

A stylised X for a logo, a simple clear banner, pretty blue thumbnails. We're still working out the details, but I think the simple white-on-blue look is effective.

But before making big changes, I wanna consult you guys – what do you think of the new design ideas? What should Alt Shift X look like?

Thanks!

Alt Shift X

The "Alt Shift" and the "explainers and analysis..." text is just a placeholder I added to the designer's concept – will definitely change that font (:

I personally love the plain serifed Times New Roman, but I may just be stuck in my ways. I don't think changing from a serif font to a sans serif font is really shaking things up. I like the X logo, but if you're going to change the font, maybe make it be something that's different, and not something you'd easily find but still somehow minimalistic (since that's your aesthetic).

Kenny Arnold

I like the thumbnail, but yeah you need a good looking typeface that communicates sophisticated analytic content... might I suggest comic sans?

As a digital visual designer, I totally understand the want to change up your visual brand. But I strongly associate and love the simplicity of the serif black text on white. It stands out from most youtube channels that do try to do highly designed/overly designed intros/visual branding. Your analysis is always straightforward and easy to understand, and your old/current branding reflects that. I do like the design of the X but I think you should keep to black on white (it's also better for accessibility reasons) with a serif font (doesn't need to be TNR but you rock that) and maybe just a punch of that blue here or there as an accent colour. Also for fonts if you want to change it up, check out 60s-era print fonts. Lots of awesome serif and sans serif fonts that are minimalist but gorgeous and unique (and also now free).

Agree that a redesigned serif X could look really cool. Generally sans serif is more readable on screens than serif (and vice versa for print), but a font like Albertus (for example) could work if you feel strongly about the sans serif route. That's a serif font that has really subtle serifs.

I understand your wish to change, but I really appreciate the simple black and white design. Others seem to pay more attention to their logo/visuals than content, this focus makes you special. The entire blue white thing doesn’t look very unique. The New X is fine other than that black/white with one picture and the simple font is the way to go. Either way - I will stay here in whatever color ;)

Natasha Ivy

I agree with suggestions proposing a redesigned X in a serif font :) I think it'd keep your logo recognizable and familiar, creating a visual connection with the current Times New Roman logo, while providing the newness of the mock-up redesigned sans serif logo depicted here.

So we should just call you Mr. X now? I very much like the patterned blue background, that mirrors your editing. I also like the idea of the stylised X - however I agree with others that a serif font suits your bookish style better. I think I would rework the large X to make it look more like the old TNR by making one of the stokes thinner - it could be done by giving it some serifs and turning the 3D feeling around a bit so you look at one of the strokes more on edge - am I making sense? The thumbnail with the X masking effect is very clever, beautifully done and I love the look of it. It just doesn't make me think Alt Shift X at all. Though a serif font for the text might do a lot of difference here also. Personally I like the Butler font for a modern sleek serif font that looks somewhat like TNR but smarter. Also consider the look of your page with 20 of these thumbnails and the header - that much blue might be a bit overwhelming?

Hairless Oyster asks me to tell you, that he loves it, and that it "makes him want to eat blue corn tacos stuffed with truth and guacamole" :)

I think you should keep your profile picture and thumbnails the same and redesign your banner. Your profile picture is classic and you rock it much harder than you may realize, apparently. A redesign for the thumbnail may be appropriate, but one thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that it is very easy to read on mobile. Most thumbnails are a disaster to try to read or make it on mobile, but the simplicity and contrast of yours ease that. I think small things like that add up and matter. The banner is a cool illustration of your work in a mural like context. I appreciate it because I know the hard work goes into making that a video in your fashion, but most people probably don’t see it that way. So perhaps a branded banner might clean things up. I like the X emblem, but please keep your profile picture

Take into account how the thumbnail looks on tablets/ iPhones etc... Using the X as a promonint feature could make it really easy to see among the new vide feed .. Though for thumbnails Id move it to left with text on right as the eye naturally reads left down to right..... Though im sure the Boltons( whats left of them) will be very happy with the new design :-)

Ed McCloskey

clarify.. Id move the X Mask Logo to left and any text to the right... Its early here in Frankfurt n I still not had any coffee...

I am also nostalgic about the original thumbnail, but I completely agree that the banner needs a redesign. It’s visually jarring and doesn’t really represent the sleek videos you make. I’m like Rikke- it will take time to associate the new designs to Alt Shift X! But go with what you like and what feels authentic to you, I say.

Abdul Bhutta

It’s headed in the right direction, I love it!

Kelly Theobald

I love it! The blue is so warm and inviting. :) I’m not crazy about the new X, but that’s okay. I like the new video thumbnails—very modern and sleek—but yeah, something about it doesn’t scream ASX to me. It almost looks too designed. Maybe if you switched the colors and do a white background with blue text? The image within the X is awesome. Either way, I love it!

Settlers of Natan

I love the simplicity of the current logo! Though I understand you wanting to brand your different channels and create the YouTube Analysis Empire you deserve! I like the X design though who can you tell the difference between the Main ASX, Alt Schwift X or Alt Shift Book Club? Will the different colors represent different channels?

ChthonicPuck

The knockout X for the video thumbnail is amazing, and its always nice to see a modern clean San Serif font. Im digging the blue too. What I don't like is within the X the two sharp negative space triangles creating that weird 4 pointed intersection. I would just change the negative space triangles to rectangles to keep roughly the same look.

RTT12

I love the new logo, and I see why you are doing it. Personally, to me though, one of the things that grabbed my attention to your videos was the high view count combined with the simple thumbnail. ("If a channel that doesn't put any effort into the thumbnail has that many clicks, it must be good")

Bikes, Books & Buildings

It does look a little corporate, or business-serious to me, but the design itself seems solid!

Ellemcee

I really like the graphics, but am hung up on the non-parallelism of the text: how about explainers and analyzers or explanation and analysis? Or deconstructors...

Alex Felix

I like the thumbnail, but the banner or profile picture feel off.

El Swifto

Most importantly.. will the rebranding be coming to that guy Schwift?

Alt Shift X

Yeah I think you're right, a serif font makes sense. We could keep the black-on-white thumbnails while still changing the logo and banner (:

Alt Shift X

Yeah you're right about the current banner - we know the work it represents, but most people just see a jumble of colour. So it makes sense to use a simpler banner.. And good point about the thumbnail readability

Alt Shift X

YouTube puts a timestamp on the bottom-right, so it's usually best to keep text on the left

Alt Shift X

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone! I reckon we'll keep a similar thumbnail design, work out a nice serif X for the logo, and simplify the banner.

Jeffrey Boerst

Saw this late. It looks like the label on a new drug bottle. You should consider fashioning a side effect disclaimer for yourself. ;)

Settlers of Natan

So wanted to come back and say I love the new branding! It looks so good! Just wanted to let you know

Alt Shift X

Thanks Natan! The Patron feedback really helped get a nice design together (:
