So the Arya recap video will be out for Patrons in <24 hours.

And I've been experimenting with different editing styles. My concern is that sometimes, the transitions from one shot to another feel clunky and disorienting. So here's the first minute of the Arya video in a few different styles:

Normal classic vintage Shift: watch

Faster Alt Swift X: watch

Instant hard cuts: watch

The Normal one is okay, but some parts like 0:58 and 0:36 feel jarring - you only get a moment to see the video clip before the transition moves elsewhere.

The Swift one tries to fix that problem by doubling the speed of the transitions, leaving more time to see the video clips.

The Instant one removes the transitions entirely, resembling more traditional editing. It'd be way easier to make videos this way, but without a giant mindmap feel, is it really Alt Shift X?

I think the best solution is to keep the Normal-style transitions, but be smarter about the timing of clips. I think the transitions feel better if the video motion pauses some time before the transition starts. And sometimes there just need to be fewer clips. So here's a subtly Improved version of the normal style: watch

What do you think? Is the Improved one best? Do they all look the same? Are we focusing too much on tiny details? Yes, we are. But the video'll be great, and it's coming for Patrons soon !!

I would say the improve version is the best, though it is difficult for me to tell the differences between that and Normal. The transtion path with the zoom out view is signature ASX in my opinion so please keep those transitions! The instant cuts seem odd for your videos and I always enjoyed mapping the picture path when you show the big map. But I have no editing skills or even an eye for cinematography so idk how much my vague statements help!

I watched the three before I finished reading the explainations, and it seems we reached the same conclusion! The only thing I noticed (which I would never have noticed normally) is that some of the short clips freezes just before the "motion" is carried though, such as the first, where Arya takes a bow. It's slightly frustrating that she doesn't seem to get the whole way back to upright position when it freezes. It's, like, a millisecond too soon, the same is true for a couple of the other ones. I also don't think every new "shift" needs moving frames, some could very well be stills, with perhaps more satisfying sections of movement interspersed. Thanks for great videos, I hope my feedback is non-dumb.

I think the "subtly improved version" is subtly better. But personally I prefer the instant hard cuts. It seems smoother to me.

Kellan

I like the normal one, but all 3 are great.

I've got a production background, so I completely understand why you've done what you've done here. Honestly the hard cuts are good - but I agree with others that without the big ol' Mindmap experience it just isn't an Alt Shift X joint. Plus, then we've got a jump cut from "Arya loves Jon Snow" to "Jon gives Arya Needle". I actually liked the sped up transitions least. I think it was more jarring than the normal speed transitions, even into/out of video. Moral of the story: I like staying status quo. But if you need to change it up, go with minute adjustments to the transitions only when necessary. It'll be more work, no doubt. But I think it's the best product. Which is why many of us are Patrons - this is an excellent product. Cheers!

I agree with Jason Connelly. The sliding is part of the Alt Shift X brand.

Jordan Bell

I agree with the solution to focus on the timing of the clips rather than changing the transition, and I just barely noticed the difference between the original transition and slightly altered one. I appreciate the thought about it though, some of my favorite ASX moments have come via the editing, like when a clip perfectly syncs up with when you say a line or is used for dramatic effect. Those choices are subtle, but for me personally, it definitely make for an even more engaging and enjoyable experience!

Think that Felix said it well!

Voting for the "subtly improved" traditional version. The hard cuts don't feel like Alt Shift X style.

Crisssss

I honestly couldn’t discern a significant difference except with hard cuts. Honestly your visuals are secondary to the narrative which,as usual,is superb.

Jonathan Melenson

Stick with the original -- the sped up transitions are too fast and make it difficult to follow what's happening.

Tony Dembinski

I dislike the hard cuts and prefer the normal shift or slightly sped up.

Elona

I love the original

Normal classic vintage Shift and faster Alt Shift X are both great. Maybe even a speed in between that would be good too. The instant hard cuts don't have a nice flow to it.

I think the mind map style is part of what makes the video unique-- I'd vote to keep the standard way. Keep up the great work!

Paul Barry

Definately the original for me. I didn’t like the fast transitions, but was okay with the hard cuts. But must have the mindmap. Without that, it doesn’t feel ASX. And what would I use as my screen saver??

Alt Shift X

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm glad the mindmap style is appreciated, because a heap of work goes into it

Alt Shift X

Yeah unfortunately that Arya bow clip ends on a kinda awkward blurry frame – the shot ends before Arya stops moving, so sadly I can't get a crisp still from it
