This is a special video. I’ve wanted to make it for years – and given recent events, now seems like the perfect time to finally release it. Alt Shift X began with educational/non-fiction videos – and in the last Patron survey, a lot of you were keen for more. I hope you like it! The video will be Patron-only for a while – I wanna hear your feedback before releasing it publicly. Might also make an Xtra video, like the Dorne Xtra video.

There’s a new vote open now for $4+ Patrons to choose our next ASOIAF / Game of Thrones video topic – vote now!

We’re also working on a possible His Dark Materials video, and a video on a weird sci fi story called All Tomorrows. Later on, thinking about Dune, Foundation, The Expanse.

Thanks for your support!

2026-09-17 12:00 Amazing video. So comprehensive and the amount of research you put in is clear. Please make more videos like this.

Thanks so much Emerson! Yeah a crazy amount of research went into this, and only a small fraction ended up in the video -- so there are lots more cool stories to tell in an Xtra video :)

This was so interesting. I really enjoyed it. I'm totally down for more videos like this.

Great stuff! I couldn´t shake the feeling that you had about ten times the content and had to cut and brush heavily. I really love your style and how you put things together, show connections and contradictions. Keep up the great work!

Bill Miller

Maybe make a multi-part series out of it if there's that much material? Just a thought. (I'm about half way through now and loving it so far. would hate to miss any of it)

Bill Miller

Oh, and I'm so glad you linked to that other guy's video on Bojack Horseman, The Good Place, and endings. IMHO - one of the best videos on the tube, should've had a million views.

GemmaG

This was great! I have a flat earther/ lizard people believer for a B-I-L so when this is public I'll enjoy sharing it with him. I've always thought it was just his way of making sense of a complicated world (which helps me to feel sympathy rather than rage when he explains that earth is a dish shape over Xmas dinner 😂). Love these little projects you bring to us and would appreciate more of them ❤️

Jmo

I totally loved this!

Robinson Lakra

This was great, but this type of videos always end up with no conclusion.

Omri Goldshtrom

This was absolutely brilliant. Employing the same clear, engaging, evidence-rich analysis to social/political issues as you've done for fiction. Cheers and looking forward to more!

Corey

This is the video that got me to resub to you on Patreon. It was really really good

I just wrote a similar comment on YT, but it bears repeating: this video inspired me to become a Patreon member. I love your GoT and Westworld content, but I'm happy to see you branch out into the real world and history. Your narration, level of research, and presentation style translate perfectly to this type of video essay, and I'd be excited to see more. Cheers man!
