The only question I have coming out of the episode is that everyone seemed to forget about Daemon calling himself the true heir in his letter, obviously the dragon egg was the bigger deal but they didn't really acknowledge that he explicitly went beyond wanting Rhaenyra out of the way and said that as far as he's concerned she's not Viserys' heir

Alt Shift X

Yeah it's borderline open rebellion -- crazy that Viserys initially said he wouldn't react

Autumn

Keeping the same intro is a big indication to me that HBO is trying to make this their Star Wars, with one signature theme song for the whole franchise. I personally don’t like the way they’ve changed Alicent’s character. They’re trying to make her sympathetic by portraying her as a pawn and a victim, whereas in the books, she was a schemer/social climber in her own right. It also makes Viserys look like a creep (he doesn’t want to bed a 14 year old, so he’s going to bed a 15 year old instead). I did, however, like the way she covertly pushed Viserys and Rhaenyra towards reconciling. Dark humor needs to make a comeback. I don’t want comedic relief like Season 8 had either, but I think HOTD could benefit from some of the levity found in older HBO dramas like Deadwood and Six Feet Under.

Alt Shift X

I imagine Alicent will start naive, but become more of a schemer as the story progresses

Mara

Yeah, considering how many examples down the line we get of wars being fought over people calling themselves the true heir (whether it's the Blackfyres or Stannis or something that we're gonna be seeing later in the season) I'm mostly just confused at why it wasn't a bigger deal

One of the things that was initially frustrating about GOT, but ultimately awesome, was the incredibly vast range of characters and geographical broad storylines. Lots of characters spread across Westeros and beyond. HOD feels very very narrow at the moment. There doesn't even seem to be a development of the characters on the small council, let alone characters from different houses across the realm. Some of the best moments from GOT came from the banter between Tyrion, Littlefinger, Varys, Pycelle, Cersei etc. It feels like there are only 4-5 characters being developed in HOD. Do you expect this to expand and add the kind of character depth that we saw in GOT?

Autumn

I'm starting to miss the other houses too. As good as the acting has been (for the most part), none of these new characters really pop the way they did in the original series, and I think that has to do with the strength of George's dialogue. The closest for me is Rhaenyra. I know a lot of people love Daemon, but I don't find him all that charming. He's written as more of a manchild than a rebel, and because he's much older than in the books (Matt Smith is almost 40 and looks older), he comes across as kind of obnoxious.

Mara

Without spoiling the story will open up to include more houses later on but the focus will probably still ultimately be on the Targaryens

Alt Shift X

Yeah we're only on episode 2. I think there's lots of room to expand from here.

The twist will be interesting. In the many trailers, we have a shot of her on the seat of the King at King's counsil. I guess this will be right after Viserys' death.

Autumn

Adult-Alicent looks neurotic in all the trailers/promo pics, which is an interesting choice, to say the least. Maybe they plan on writing Rhaenyra differently, but after all the criticism they got for having two mad queens in GOT, you’d think they’d want to avoid doing that again.
