I thought the episode was good but I'm confused at how Harwin punching Criston is any sort of confirmation that the royal kids are his, is being angry that someone accused you of treason in public not an option?

Laura

So many questions after this episode: Why do Rhaenyra’s kids not speak High Valyrian? Seems like a thing you teach your Targaryen children. How much does Viseryus owe his life to Mellos dying? Others were able to treat him with more than leeches now. Why are Harwin and Cristin not wearing the white cloak? Their new positions and/or symbolism? Why did they not repair Harrenhall after Aegon the Conqueror? I thought they’re still building castles in this period, unlike in GOT. Why did Rhaenyra leave? Seems like you should be building a team when your dad is dying and others question the succession. If this is the Shakespeare of our time, how many years until this story’s made into a high school teen movie a la Clueless?

Autumn

Yeah, I would think that Harwin yelling “say that again!” would be an indication that he wasn’t the father, not the other way around. Weird writing decision.

The gap could have been handled better. We missed so much about Harwin and Laena that would have enriched the story if we got more time with them. Larys is a bit of a head-scratcher too—during the first half of the season, he seemed close to his brother, but now he’s willing to murder his entire family out of nowhere? Is he supposed to just be an agent of chaos, or is he obsessed with Alicent? (I saw someone point out how, considering his pin looks like a bee, him constantly sniffing flowers around Alicent has a sort of Freudian implication). During the Inside the Episode segment, the writer said that they wanted Laena to “go out like a warrior” rather than be just another woman who died in childbirth. Which is. . . weirdly sexist, honestly. I guess if women die in a way men are unable to, then it must be pretty lame. Along with the pacing, I think my biggest problem with HOTD is that everyone is miserable all the time. The writers talk so much about this being the height of the Targaryen dynasty, but you would never know that based on what’s on the screen. It’s also interesting how they continue to make Daemon progressively worse than he was in the books.

Thanks for the livestream! A tip to maybe reshuffle your family tree to show/remind people that Daemon and Viserys are brothers 👍🏽
