Video: Jon update, ancient myths, children of the forest (Patreon)

We're working on the final part of the Real Jon Snow video. To figure out Jon's endgame, I went deep into the myths of ASOIAF, and wrote an extra video about ancient legends and the children of the forest. I think you almost forgot to mention the part in ADWD in which Jon ordered a few Lysene ships as well as an Ib whaler to be seized for a voyage to Hardhome.

This was great. I had forgotten so much about the Children of the Forest. A video dedicated to them and the myths and legends is certainly warranted. I wouldn't be surprised if each woman in the Azor Ahai-type prophecy who gets killed wasn't at least part Children of the Forest. That'd be an interesting tie-in. I'm happy to have been a patron for these years. I'm really looking forward to the Jon Snow video. I know a lot of work has gone into it.

Great video! I really like all the ideas about humans and CoF interbreeding. The only thing I’d push back on is the notion that all or many of the legends are actually just one Uber Legend. Like I don’t think every story about the Long Night and the Night’s King and Azor Ahai and so on and so forth come from one singular historical event, but rather several, possibly a multitude that have been condensed in some way, over time. If anything, I think ASOIAF will be their culmination, the one Uber Legend, just by the nature of it being the Main Story We’re Reading. Although yeah, I imagine the mythic roles will be split over our cast. How *does* Arya fit into the Long Night? What about Sansa or Tyrion or even Brienne? Or, le gasp, Pod the Rod?

Excellent video, I quite like how you picked up on the similarities between legends, like the Nights King, the Bloodstone Emperor and all the others. I'm not sure if this something that's going to be important or whether GRRM just likes to use this in his writing (like how there are similarities between Brienne and See Duncan). Either way an interesting watch.

Agreed. I don't think we'll get clear answers on exactly what happened with Azor Ahai and Night's King and the Bloodstone Emperor. But those myths are there to hint at the themes and ideas of ASOIAF's endgame. The stuff about Azor Ahai sacrificing Nissa Nissa has already been explicitly compared to Stannis sacrificing Edric Storm.

This a bit offtopic - but I am listening to the "Descending the ASOIAF Theory Iceberg" by that Alt Schwift X fella, and at some point, he says this: "If you want like a bold prediction, I'd say that if we don't get it in the next 2 years, we might never get it. How is that for, how is that for a prediction? But I'm optimistic, I reckon we will get "Winds" And, of course, the video was published more than 2 years ago :) What are your thoughts on this?

Totally with you there. I'm also a big proponent of viewing Azor Ahai as The Villain, or at the least very morally dubious, and very possibly one and the same as the Bloodstone Emperor.

I think there's a chance The Winds of Winter won't be finished. But George gave some kinda encouraging updates last year -- that TWOW is three-quarters complete, that several POV storylines are almost finished... He's definitely struggling with it, and he's distracted, and the man's 75 years old... But I've gotta disagree with Alt Schwift X -- we could get Winds years from now.

If there will indeed be a pact with the white walkers to end the long night this time around, it could be they agree to have winter every year for like a quarter of the year. Basically regulating the seasons. I know that’s a theory that’s been thrown around. Great video as always!

Hey Shifty I really love all you videos but this one could be the best yet! I’m not sure if you mentioned this previously but sometimes I think that the ‘army of the dead’ is not meant to be beatable. More of a threat and a way for The Others to get what they want (TPTWP). Might be a silly thought and apologies if so but thought I’d share that :)
