Shin did wimp out on telling her there but what does he say in that moment. "oh you still love Itsu, zero hesitation. That reminds me, Itsu has a girlfriend now." The problem is more that he steered the conversation wrong. He just needs to spend some time just talking about anything not Itsu. Then just tell her.

Something interesting in all of the flashbacks of them walking together, Ema is obviously leaning in towards Itsuomi, but she's subtly walking just slightly closer to Shin.
