what really cooks my brain is the millenium dragon/warship island filler arc way back before they went into the grand line, luffy could just randomly understand the dragons in that as well, the only other one there who could do that was the little girl cos she'd eaten the devil fruit that let her do that. i wonder if thats just coincidence or if oda let the writers in on that being something about luffy that far back. that or i've just forgotten another canon example of this from way further back?

When you saw Jack's mask get shattered, he was shown having Fishman teeth, so there's a chance he might be alive underwater...but still paralyzed because of his devil fruit. That's my theory at least.

The reason momo and luffy can hear the elephant is they both have the power to hear "the voice of all things" as Reighley mentioned in sabaody that Roger also had, it was also explained by reighley that its because of this power that roger could leave his message on the poneglyph in skypeia when robin asked him about it. I like to think the voice of all things is just pure vibe to vibe communication. Shirahoshi is kinda different because she has outright control over the sea kings as the ancient weapon Poseiden but it could also have some overlap maybe.

Luffy really doesn't have much cause to know Marco, all things considered. After all, he was more than a bit distracted at the time, and he was not in good shape at the time. Remember, by the time he'd arrived at Marineford, it had been around thirty hours, give or take, since his encounter with Magellan. Twenty of those hours were spent enduring extreme tortures, and the remaining time was spent hopped up on a large dose of adrenaline. During the war, his focus was exclusively on surviving and reaching Ace. The entire time, Luffy was literally working himself to death, and he was well beyond his limits even before reaching Marineford in the first place. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure that he and Marco never interacted directly, anyway. He had already forgotten Buggy's name within the few weeks between Buggy's first and second attempts to kill him. I think Luffy can be forgiven for not remembering the name of someone that he's never met before, when the only time they were in proximity to each other was during such a trying event.

if you think about it as well Luffy has always been able to understand animals. Starting with the little dog Chuchu, even in the Battleship Island filler he could understand the dragon.
