Oh man, I gotta pause and do an autism because I just made a connection that I haven't caught before in this movie. The pink alien babe in Peter's ship at the beginning says her name is Bereet and I just realized why I know that name. Bereet is a character in the comics who first appeared in The Rampaging Hulk in 1977. Rampaging Hulk was a separate line of comics from Incredible Hulk, the mainline book for Hulk, that was published by Curtis Magazines, an imprint of Marvel Comics. It was black and white with higher quality print and more pages than Incredible Hulk and told stories that were separate from the current ongoing in the main book, like when the Hulk fought the X-Men in Paris. Bereet appeared in this book as a mysterious alien who joined Hulk in fighting of an alien invasion (by other aliens). Later on after Rampaging Hulk was canceled, most of the characters from that book couldn't be used anymore (including a personal favorite of mine, Dr. Sheila Marks who was actually the first to suggest Bruce Banner might be suffering from DID) and the events of the book was rendered non Canon. However, Bereet showed up in Incredible Hulk and it was retconned that Bereet was actually a movie producer on her planet and the events of Rampaging Hulk were actually part of movies she made that basically amounted to fanfiction of herself going on adventures with the Hulk and his friends. Then she shows up in the main book and acts like she's actually friends with Hulk and Betty and Rick (Hulk's best friend who isn't in the movies) and they're all like "who...?". And apparently there is a Bereet in the MCU and it took me until now to realize. Ok, autistic info dump over, I'll go back to watching the reaction now.

Moviejunkie

First, Alicia you are absolutely right because this movie ends with the power of friendship better than My little pony. Second, Ronan is probably the Lamest villain in the MCU to me, he’s just angry and evil to where Thanos had to tell him he ain’t shit.

Bologna Amputation

So, here's a fun fact: Vin Diesel's script had the meaning behind every line, and he was simply to read it as "I am Groot," in the tone of a given line. I feel it's most obvious in the "It's better than eleven" line!

Ok

Happy new year

DLBTibbin

Since you didn't say it, what would you rate this one, Alicia?

Yurei Okami

Fun fact: for the international dubs of the movie, Vin Diesel himself did the dub for Groot in a bunch of different languages, including my native language, brazilian portuguese ;D Even if it's just 3 words, it's kind of wild hearing Vin Diesel speaking portuguese XD

ChaotixInsanity

I love watching these films with your reactions. You give all these insights one how a particular scene was made or the reason why peter doesn't want to hold his mothers hand.

Aqua Lantern

Wooohoo! More Marvel! I love this one. I actually had a Baby Groot toy that would play the song and shake around when you pushed the button, it was super cute! :)

Bastiwen

I've been following you for a few years now, since you started the JoJo's reaction and let me thank you for all the great content you put out. You definitely deserve the growth you've had!

Kyrix

Don't be sad Alicia, Christmas is over, we gotta put the tree away

Ultrazucc

dude i love your reactions so much oh my god ive been here since the start of jojos with ant

WindWarriorPlays

chris pratt was infact chubbier...then he was told to lose weight if he wanted this role.....the rest is history

WindWarriorPlays

"did i just cry to a tree saying three words yes i did" well to be fair you also cried to a ship so like this isnt off brand for you lol

G0R0_!ch!B@n25

Good luck with the copyright stuff for this reaction

Anthony

funny thing is drax has a rare disorder where he cant see things that stop moving, hence why he couldnt see groot at the end dancing

CrimsonWarrior55

Sadly, Groot did actually die at the end. That little twig is his son, Groot II.

This is one of my favorite movies in the MCU, probably top 3. It's funny too because on paper this isn't really the kind of movie I usually like. I don't usually like having a lot of jokes and comedy in superhero movies and I tend to prefer when adaptions at least try to stay true to the source. Can't really explain why this movie works despite the focus on comedy and doing something very different from how these characters are in the comics I've read. Actually, I think a lot of the changes to the characters were actually done in the comics first, there was a relaunch of Guardians of the Galaxy in like 2008, I think? I wasn't reading comics at the time, haven't really read those so I don't really know but I'm pretty sure Brian Bendis wrote the book and he's kind of infamous for not really giving a shit about the work of writers who came before him and doing whatever he wants with established characters. You know, I feel an autistic info dump incoming so I'm just gonna type an essay about the publication history of these characters, feel free to read but it's not really important. So the Guardians of the Galaxy was originally conceived as a team formed in the far future of the 31st century (one possible futured, dubbed Earth-691) where Earth had been conquered by these aliens called, uh, the Badoon I think? The Guardians consisted of Major Vance Astro, an astronaut who had been traveling in cryo sleep since the 80s; Charlie-27, a genetically modified giant man from Jupiter; Martinex, a crystal man from Pluto and Yondu Udonta, from Earth's first interstellar colony in the Alpha Centauri system. So the only character in this movie who was a member of the original Guardians is actually Yondu! Although he was quite different originally, the reason he has a mohawk and uses an arrow was originally because he was conceived as kind of a Native American in Space, down to his people being victims of colonization by a foreign power (Earth). He had a bow that he would shoot his arrow from but he also controlled it with whistling. The original Guardians were created in 1969 by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan. They would occasionally time travel and interact with the Avengers or the Defenders or whatever but otherwise they kinda existed in their own separate continuity. Star-Lord is a character who did exist very briefly in the 70s. First appearing in Marvel Preview in 1975, created by Steve Englehart, Steve Gad and Bob McLeod, he got a few features in Marvel Preview and Marvel Premiere as well as one singular issue of his own self titled book. He also lived in a future where Earth were fighting aliens but a different future from the one where the Guardians lived (Earth-791, entirely separate from Earth-691 you see). He had some similarities to his modern counterpart, like his name and the name of his mother as well as being a hybrid, but not a lot. I don't think there was much mention of Star-Lord after 1976 until likely 2004 I think when the concept was dusted off and given a second chance. Gamora in this movie is not too dissimilar to her comic book counterpart. Adopted daughter of Thanos, feared as the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy. Believe it or not but she's also from yet another different future, Earth-7528! Her future however was only like 20 years in the future and Thanos from the main timeline went there, got her and brought her back to the main timeline, Earth-616. Her and Nebula don't really have the sister type relationship in the comics. In the comics Nebula is this psycho villain who claims to be Thanos' granddaughter and Thanos is like "I've never seen this woman in my whole life" except maybe he's lying? I'm not sure to be honest. Anyways, in the comics Nebula destroys Xandar, killing 5 billion inhabitants. When a Xandarian confronts her and asks why she did she basically says "it seemed like a fun idea at the time". Drax in the comics is actually from Earth originally. He was a jazz musician in Las Vegas named Arthur Douglas. However, Arthur and his family had the misfortune of accidentally seeing Thanos' ship when he was scouting out Earth so Thanos shot their car without second thought, killing them. It was actually Thanos' father who took what was left of Arthur and returned him to life as Drax the Destroyer for the express purpose of killing Thanos since he had come to realize that his son was irredeemable evil. Draw originally had fairly normal intelligence but later had his brain partially destroyed by a telepath and became actually mentally handicapped which, uh, never sat very well with me. I actually prefer how they did him in the movie where he's not stupid, he just thinks differently. Actually, me and a lot of others with autism find him very relatable. I also just really like Dave Bautista, he's someone I admire a lot. Anyways, Drax and Gamora were actually on a different team before the new Guardians were formed, they were other Infinity Warch together. Groot is pretty interesting because he's actually one of the oldest characters in these movies publication wise, first appearing in Tales to Astonish in 1960 where he was billed as "The Monster from Planet X" and was a pretty generic but tree themed evil space monster. Technically that story is still Canon but the modern Groot is a different Groot. Rocket Raccoon is actually a character I know a fair bit about since he's the brainchild of Bill Mantlo who I know as a Hulk writer. Actually, Mantlo used the 20th anniversary issue of Incredible Hulk as a sneak pilot to get his Rocket Raccoon character off the ground. He had tried once before in a Prince Wayfarer feature in one of the anthology books but Rocket didn't really take off from there so Mantlo put him in Hulk as well and then got him his own book for a mini series. He was quite a different character originally. For one thing he was very, very British, his dialogue full of British slang and such. You can still hear that in adaptions from before this movie, like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 where he has a British accent. He also had an almost Robin Hood like demeanor, being an outlaw fighting for the freedom of all his animal friends from the evil mole Judson Jake's and his arch rival Blackjack O'Hare. So yeah, quite different. Anyways, I think that's quite enough for now. Probably too much but I might ad well stop myself now before I go on about Ronan the Accuser and the Kree and the Nova Corps or whatever.

hemahemahema

It's hilarious Alicia actually had a big reaction to the name "Star-Lord", like the complete opposite to the scene's intention lol

Sawnderz

I didn't pick up for years that the new Groot sapling at the end is not actually Groot. That's his son.

Vincent Price

this movie was a pivotal point in Holleywood. the comedy factor was copied to hell after the success of this movie.

L Freya

I hope we get the Holiday Special!!! And whenever we get to part 3 - you know if you know.

Sean Forster

When you doing guardians 2? I love watching with your commentary, feels very comfy.

Rhodair

awesome react, hope your long list may include both the holiday special and I Am Groot (2022 series of shorts)

Sean Harvey

Alicia- (Wishes Rocket won't die) Finger curls on monkey's paw. Two seconds later- We Are Groot

Azi

This right here is where it gets "too marvely" for me. I can enjoy it BUT I HAVE TO FULLY SHUT DOWN MY BRAIN. This is where it started... The forced 'kid's movie" like constant defusion of tension. I hate how it also seeped out into many other marvel films and series...

Azi

The more I learn about her dad the more I am convinced He is an IRL uncle Iroh... The kinda dad I will try to be!

Silver Raven

Not sure if anyone Mentioned but the Duck at the end was Howard the Duck. He was the first attempt at a marvel movie. Let's just say it's bad... REALLY BAD!

Charlie baker

guardians is easily my favorite of the mcu

Mojo

Oh yeah, seeing a passed away loved one messes you up. Planned or not. No matter how old you are. Your dad & you are real ones for what you did. <3

Alex Cline

The drop at 1:09:10 was actually accidental and they kept it in

Zeekutar The Immortal

5:10 the only thing worse than the pain of loss, is having no one to share the pain with. 11:55 vin d. is better in his voice only roles than most of his live roles. iron giant was masterful.

Gavin Thomas

the hughs drop was unecesary and i am now crying

Sean Forster

When you doing vol 2? It's super fun.

HappyMeal 4Fun

Yondu is the same actor who played Mearl. Daryls heavily racist brother in the walking dead season 1. Thats where i know him from atleast

Petter Uppvall

Still love that Peter dropping and catching the orb was an accident.

YeCrustModifier

that was Howard the Duck at the end. You HAVE to watch the 80's Howard the Duck movie! :D

YubarReingok

So fun fact: Peter dropping the orb wasn't in the script, that was a complete accident on set. But Gunn liked the take so much, he kept it in because he thought it just fit too well for Peter's character.

Alex

Oh you have to check out the Guardians game.

Andrew

i swear thanos was blue in this movie

Kap

After this movie came out, Baby Groot was all my girlfriend talked about. She adored him. For her birthday, I got her a Baby Groot that would "dance" to music it heard. She would set it up by the stereo speakers and it would dance all day while she did things around the house. One of the best purchases I ever made.

ErisCirce

My god i didnt notice Howard the duck in the very last part i thought the last part is groot in a pot dancing only

Nunya Biz

Ah Howard the Duck. While some comic fans know him. Us older people will remember that He had his own live action Marvel Movie YEARS Ago. One of the FIRST live action Marvel movies back in 1986. And it was BAD. lol So Yeah. Its a nice little Easter egg for the older people and Comic fans. Nothing else to it though.

Kyllix

I like how from the very start of the movie, peter switches his guns to non-lethal when fighting most people. there isn't much attention drawn to it, but it really shows from the start that he's a good guy at heart.

Random3x

Love that you can hear Rocket's voice half crack when he asks for the leg trying not to laugh

fonz lopez

one of my fav moments in this movie is the part where it looks like yondu is going to execute peter. and peter says 'if you kill me now. you are saying goodbye to the biggest score you have ever seen'. and you can see yondus face change the moment he begins talking. because its obvious he had no desire to kill him. and he knew if he gave him a chance hed come up with some way to talk him out of it. all that crap before with him roughing him up was just him letting him work something out so he wouldnt have to kill a person he loved.

CarcosanTimeshare

One of my clearest, most visceral memories from my childhood was missing the opportunity to say goodbye to my grandmother at the hospital when she passed. I was 7 and my reaction was very similar to Peter's. Minus the alien abduction, of course. Her last words were literally to tell me that she loved me. For almost 30 years of my life, I hated myself for that moment. It was the foundation upon which the majority of my mental health issues, and terrible decisions, was built. I didn't know how to process it, and my mom didn't know how to help me at the time.

CarcosanTimeshare

1:14:00 In the comics Thanos was bizarrely kind to Gamora. At some points they had a really wholesome father and daughter relationship. Like, celebrated holidays together, got her presents for her birthday, gave her positive reinforcement, etc... Of course, in that era Thanos also owned a bright yellow helicopter with big block letters on the side of it that said THANOS-COPTER. Thanos also has a bit of prankster streak in him. There was this one random dude on earth, that Thanos showed up to his birthday party every year to ruin it, just to fuck with him. I can't remember how he caught Thanos' attention in the first place, he'd make sure that guy was the only one who ever knew he did it. The one I remember best was when he poisoned the punch bowl in the guy's 20's and killed everyone at the party.
