IMO Luffy figuring out it was Pekoms right away is probably due to his increase in Observation Haki. Luffy was able to point out Katakuri's "voice" from inside his mochi temple. While Luffy can't use Armament and Conqueror's Haki after using gear 4 it seems the same isn't true for Observation.

Ive heard some people take it as a plothole that Luffy doesnt use Gear 4 before Dressrosa, but I think the timelimit alone being way too much of a risk to just use it whenever explains it pretty well. Both Hordy and Ceasar are characters that didnt push Luffy nearly enough for it to be considered

Damn, after this rewatch of the Katakuri fight, I enjoyed it much more on the 2nd time while watching your reactions. The first time just felt so drawn out to me, but now I see it more as a test of endurance on both sides of the fight.

There is a reason Katakuri, despite being an atagonist for Luffy, is such a loved charascter. the respect for Luffy he shows is crazy. Its one of the most meaningful fights so far. Not only does Luffy develop as a fighter, as a person. But so does Katakuri. Isntead of being the same as when he started the fight, like many other villains or antagonists can be like.

luffy mentioned in dressrosa that he developed gear 4 to help match the giant animals on the island he was trianing at. to be honest hody and Caesar weren't exactly strong enough to need gear 4, they could be tricky or dangerous, but that's it compared to doffy and katakuri who needed the next step in his strength to overcome

i had just realized an episode before that you can tell katakuri was gradually becoming exhausted and weaker bc the donuts he creates when using power mochi were starting to look sloppy and not like perfect circles from the start of the fight. nice little detail

I was not comfortable saying Luffy had won that fight... UNTIL Katakuri acknowledged him (especially "seeing into the future" in beating Big Mom) and THEN fell onto his back. Up until that point I saw it as Katakuri was last man standing (and I don't care if it was just Luffy recovering after fourth gear expired - he couldn't continue the fight in that moment), so to me in that moment was Katakuri won the fight but Luffy won the war because he couldn't stop his escape... but that last part changed everything in my mind.

....or, hear me out. Luffy has _always_ been able tell when people are in disguise. He's one of, if not the most emotionally intelligent people in the series, and he's exceptionally good at reading people. He just has a sense of humor, and he's very casual by default, so he just plays along to let the people who are hiding their identities - read, Usopp pretending to be Sogeking, Foxy pretending to be Foxie, Caesar pretending to be whatshisface, and so on - have their moments of security. But right now, he's just too tired to give a shit, so he didn't bother with the facade for Pekoms. To note, Luffy isn't stupid, he's just uneducated and extremely casual, and he tends to wear his heart on his sleeve, at least for his surface emotions. He's not driven by a desire for knowledge, and he trusts his crew to know what's happening, and if it's important enough, he trusts them to fill him in and to know what to do about it. He's actually quite crafty and intelligent when he applies himself. For example, he literally just taught himself to see into the future by sheer force of will, while being beaten to death.

Yeahhh its just to show, Pekoms disguise was so bad even Luffy recognized it! Guy is fooled by sogeking and by the fake straw hats, but not this time. Also, FINALLY! I was holding my breath for the Snakeman reveal, most antecipated reaction for sure!

Yeah I definitely don't like what they did with the training arc flashbacks during this fight, the observation haki ones aren't too bad but the gear 4 one definitely ended up ruining what i thought of the Dressrosa reveal and made me think less of previous arcs post timeskip when there has been a struggle. I get that in general Luffy doesn't whip stuff out when he doesn't need to, but it still diminishes how i think of those fights.
