AcTuAlLy: Fire CAN occur and persist underwater. Rocket fuel for example can burn underwater because it already contains liquid oxygen to oxidise the mixture and allow combustion in the vacuum of space. Its really the absence of oxygen that makes fire difficult underwater, but id we assume that that log somehow contained a lot of oxygen, it could catch fire.
