Yeah... the pandemic did not do good things for the animation here. And the studio wasn't known for good animation to begin with... and they had outsourced it to an even worse studio. This show got done so dirty.

The animation quality just plummeted in the last few episodes, and it is a shame, because the story is SO GOOD. I just hope someone takes it and redoes the entire thing from the first episodes, because it's worth doing right. It's such a well-written story.

It's funny Alica reading that this was ment to be a promo, because it worked on me. I looked for a season 2 and was sad I couldn't find. I did however, find the light novel and was enthralled by it. I wasn't a huge fan of the last 2 volumes, but the rest was a treat. I highly recommend reading the light novel, it expands on/ covered so much more. Hell, watching this with Alice makes me want to do a reread. (Edit: spelling)

You should also try reading Chrysalis; it’s heavily influenced by So I’m a Spider but also has a civilization building aspect with the MC’s loving family of monster ants. Also, everyone who gets reincarnated into the world of Chrysalis is born an intelligent monster and the natives are reasonably super proactive in making sure to deal with them before they can become a threat.

Long story short, the studio outsourced the human side of the anime to a third party studio, and the stuff that studio returned was abysmal. The original studio worked over time trying to improve what little they could in the time they had before the episodes aired.

This show is such a tragedy, dude. *The original Berserk anime from the 90s is good, there's not really been one good since then.

The light novels are my favorite light novel series I've read, the world building is great, characters are fun, and the explanations for why stuff is the way it is is great. It's a shame there is no season 2, because it would cover some of the best parts of the series and probably even make sitting through the later half of the first season feel worth it.

I think I remember reading that they actually paid a different studio to do the animation for the human side of the story in the 2nd half, and the other studio didn't deliver (Likely because of covid) so they had to quickly rush it with even lower quality CG to get it done on time, but I haven't actually seen a source for this information... The light novel does mention covid troubles with the anime's production in the author's notes though, so there were covid troubles involved at least.

I started reading the LN after the last upload of this show, and it's so much better 😭. I wish they did it justice as an anime because the story is compelling and the plot is fire. There is a lot of stat/skill talk in the LN, whether that's positive or negative is subjective, but I appreciate it.

These episodes are painful to eatch in the elf village invasion parts. Such bad animation. (Yes, I do know they had to make the animation in a rush after the studio in charge of those parts didn't do their job, which in turn also left them with less time to do the animation of the spider side.)

This story is near and dear to my heart. As far as Isekai go, this was my favorite concept. I've been wanting to just get the manga already. Think I'll buy volume 1 today.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is getting a season 4 (by Studio Wit, no less) after the terrible financial issues season 3 had, don't give up on Spider potentially getting a second season even after the light novel is completed. It is a bummer, though. The end of season 1 is where the story starts getting good as the present is now caught up and we focus entirely on The Demon Lord's party and their travels through the Demon Realm. You can't cut out the human content because it takes away from the mystery of White (named by Ariel) and the Demon lord. You would not have been trying to guess who spider was if we saw the entire story chronologically. I am super bummed as my favorite scene in the whole series would have taken place near the end of season 2, when White and her classmates sit down to discuss things. Oh, and the revelation of Admin D's identity, that was really fun and interesting.

It really sucks how much they screwed the second half of this anime, because the source material is SO DAMN GOOD. If this was given to a studio like Trigger it could have been one of the best Fantasy/Isekai anime ever made. I highly recommend reading or listening to the rest of the story in your free time, very much worth the time spent. On another note, you are gonna LOVE the mighty nein, I have a feeling that Jester is gonna be your fav character.

If I remember correctly, the reason for the anime's sudden and dramatic dip in quality was at the time attributed to lack of resources and a super rushed schedule. I think they ended up outsourcing most of the later human scenes to a third party but im not sure if thats true. The most hilarious part of it is that the battle against the elves is meant to take place in a Forest but instead they're running around in a giant empty dirt field.

I know this wasn't the point of this comment but... Ascendance of a bookworm would be a great one to watch next! Animation isn't the strongest, it definitely has an other quirky MC, and the world building is really good. The light novels are a must read IMO, and the anime is a decent adaptation. I feel I could recommend it.

As for why the elves are so much more technologically advanced than everyone else... you'll just have to read the books. All I'll say is I'll almost guarantee you'll never guess the reason why.

And like when the show is good its GOOD. But fuck if there ain't a wait for it Edit: Really I think things should have stayed focused on our Spider rather than shotgunning exposition at us inbetween her scenes or episodes.

On the topic of Critical Role at the end, Vox Machina has been green lit for it's 5th and final season wrapping up the whole campaign which is very exciting. I'm currently finishing watching the live episodes of Mighty Nein so it's very exciting that the animated series is coming out so soon.

I don't know how far the light novel is but the manga is currently not too far from where season 1 ends so it will probably take a long time for a season 2, IF they ever make it.

To give some context as to why the animation went to shit, one of the out-sourced animation studios took the money and ran. So they had to animate the end with what little they had left in as quick a time as possible.

yeah, when people say they recommend this anime, it's mostly only because of Spider and her actress Aoi Yuuki being really entertaining. Everything else about this anime is such a drag. In nearly every scene Spider is in she's alone talking to herself, and I am more engaged in that storyline than anything the HERO'S PARTY is doing.

To be fair, in comparison to the vast majority of the Isekai trash, this show’s talking moment, albeit long, is also very information dense. The political dynamics and strategising make sense. It’s just way too long. In the lightnovel, I think they have a lot more info even still, but because it’s a novel it doesn’t matter. And the complexity is actually part of the fun. Film often have to dumb down the intricacies of politics and military strategies. Not just in anime, it’s a problem in most films. This show just didn’t dumb it down enough

If they ever do get around to doing S2 it should be so much more about the spider because if you think about the timelines there is still like over a decade until the timelines actually sync so there is so much plot they need to do before the end of the elf war even happens. Also slime anime next would be awesome.

Of most the isekai's I've watched Spider is kind of low on the list. I enjoy the humor and all that. It for sure isn't a show for everyone. But things like slime, overlord, saga of tanya the evil and many more get higher spots.

Remember that scene in One Piece where Sanji says Nami is 98.72% of the reason he joined the crew. That's how I feel when I'm watching this show. Kumoko a.k.a Aoi Yuki is the only thing I care about in this show and when she's not on screen I really just want to skip ahead until she's back. Can't bring myself to care about the humans or thier drama at all.

Sucks that this is where they end, because in my opinion this is when the story really picks up and gets good in the books. My favorite arc is what would be the start of a potential season 2, so it sucks we probably won't get it. Here's hoping a different studio picks up the IP and either continues the story or starts over again. Edit: Also I agree with everyone recommending the Slime isekai to you guys.

The main problem with this series imo is that they skipped so many things that they needed to not skip. The original author did jump back and forth between past and future a bit, but the reveals were done way better. They also skipped ALL the world building for the demon realm. Essentially, they left out a lot of what SEEM like small details, but are actually extremely important later on as the characters who caused the situations describe their reasoning. I'm not gonna describe anything unless you specifically ask tho. Unfortunately, I don't think this anime will ever get another season. Which sucks, because it actually gets WAAAAY better after the "war". On a final note I just wanna say Potimas sucks.

To put D's power into perspective, think of the strongest anime character you know. She can win. Easily. In all of fiction, she's like the closest to being a capital G god that I know of. Rimuru at the end of Slime story isn't far behind her, but still she beats him imo. Feel free to disagree if you think differently.

Saying in "all of fiction" is a massive reach, even if you read 24/7 your whole life you couldn't even finish every book not to mention other media. Anyway, even for me D is probably the closest to being omnipotent and I have read a lot of this "type" of stories. Tbh though I personally don't think Rimuru is that close even, D can poof anything in OR out of existence with just a thought but even someone like Rimuru has to still do some prep. Basically the only limiting factor D has is that they are forbidden to interact with the world too much.

To be fair, part of the reason that the end of the anime had the animation dip so terribly, is that they had hired another studio to help with the animation but unfortunately they ended up loosing everything and so the original studio had to redo everything in like a week.

Season 4, you mean. Part 1 and 2 of the book series was animated in Season 1, 2, and 3 Unlike Gate, the studio clearly labeled them as 3 seasons and announced the new season as season 4.) Plus, I cannot wait to see how people will react to the end of Part 3. That's going to be some good eating.

It’s not the manga that flash out the plot B, because the manga only follows one timeline, it’s the light novel, the anime follows the light novel plot, where you have 2 timelines, "the past" with the Spider and "the present" with the humans, I guess the manga decided to focus only on one timeline to be easier and the anime didn’t follow the manga plot because the manga was actually behind the anime, it’s a monthly release, which means every chapter is released once a month, not like One Piece which is weekly, so the anime decided to follow the same plot as the Light Novel, since the Light Novel has already finished, I think the manga is still going on

If you want something with a similar vibe, I cannot recommend enough that you should watch Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear. It has 2 seasons already, so lots of fun content to watch! In a way it kind of has vibes of this series mixed with One Punch Man (in my opinion)

I wish this had any prospects for more seasons to finish the story. Its definitely got its flaws, but I still had so much fun both watching it myself and rewatching it with the handful of reactors who checked it out. Its a fun story and I'd have loved to see them finish it.

Pretty sure power scalers put Admin D at ~5-B. Heavy hitting, but not remotely "strongest anime character". She doesn't really have actual concrete feats we get to see, so its hard to debate that she should be stronger even though its pretty heavily implied she could be. But overall the power system isn't that high powered compared to other 'verses, so... yeah.

Spoiler warning: Idk if the power scalers you're talking about have read all the LNs, but in the last Light Novel, after the protags "beat" D, she reveals that she basically ate all of the Dragons that were trying to leave earth to die. This relatively tiny bit of excess power was more than enough to repair the damage done to the world, but since D is an asshole, decided not to. My point in mentioning this is that she ate ALL OF THEM INSTANTLY. These Dragons are not like the dragons we meet in the story that were born within the system. They are like Gully-Gully. Immensely powerful and more than capable of destroying planets by themselves. And D just yoinked them instantly like it was nothing. In fact, when our Spider protag becomes powerful enough to fight said Dragons, when she damages D's form (by blowing her head off), the power released, which is D's own power not the Dragons, is so strong it causes the protag to become essentially paralyzed by fear, and it sends a strong enough shockwave that D's subordinates are able to instantly find her. (She's hiding for the majority of the story since she hates her day job which is ruler of the underworld). Also, it is explicitly stated within the story that if she wanted to, she could just look into the future to see what happens, or influence the "players on the board" so everything goes how she wants it to, she just doesn't because it wouldn't be entertaining.
