Alright! So Glad she is watching this masterpiece. In order to actually be ready for the movie last year I watched her reaction to the first anime season to get up to speed for the movie. I loved her analysis of all the cinematography themes and references. I'm ecstatic to see she is getting back on the chainsaw train with the best movie of the year. I accidentally bought tickets to this movie in 3D, and it was honestly an amazing time that I wish I could experience again. Regarding the art direction, I vastly prefer the movie to the first season. Obviously, the anime was extremely well made, but I really didn't like the 'realistic' direction they took. I feel like it took away some of Fujimoto's charm. The movie captures the vibe of the manga much better imo, and I hope they continue with this energy for the second season.

Detail about the butterfly I forgot what it’s called but that specific butterfly is actually poisonous to eat so the symbolism goes both ways it’s not only Denji being trapped in Reze’s web but also Reze falling and later dying for Denji as well. Edit: The butterfly in that scene is called a Monarch Butterfly.

Chainsaw man is a lesson in that you should always cherish every single thing you have, for no matter how little it is, one can always lose more. I always love the moment people realize the Sharknado thing. Litterally the two chapters of this was Sharknado I and Sharknado II. As I am sure many a comment will already have explained at this point. Also, had to have this poitned out to me. But love that the buildings light are counting down from 10 during their final confrontation at the Harbor.

On the topic of the art style, I never had an issue with the season 1 presentation, but after reading the manga and watching the film I vastly prefer this look, it looks and feels more like the original work and they just knocked it out of the park from a cinematic perspective too. This arc truly deserved the film treatment and I'm so happy they put so much love and care into it, it'll only get better from here. Good luck in surgery!

The film has a lot of foreshadowing. If you go back and watch Denji and Reze's first meeting in the phonebooth, you'll see that she came in with her hand on her neck pin. Looks like the plan was to attack him straight away in close quarters while his guard was down. But she broke down laughing and crying when she saw his innocent face. Then the flower trick seemed to have won her over, and she switched to seduction and tried to get him to run away with her.

Now, personally, with no manga spoilers, I took it as she was always planning to kill him and take his heart (see my earlier comment about their first meeting in the phonebooth). However, she fell for his earnest, innocent personality and empathised with his situation because she had a similar life to a Soviet experiment. So she switched to trying to seduce and recruit him, and I believe she genuinely thought it would be better for him to get away from the government and the hunter association. But after he rejected her, she took it hard and switched back to her original plan. At the end, she gave up trying to take his heart by force and lied about not feeling anything for him, to make him give up on following her. There was a split moment where she was going to accept his offer to run away together (when she almost kissed him at the beach), but she resisted for his own good, as she didn't want to corrupt him. (She is a murderer after all) So she disabled him to give her time to run away. She was about to get on the train to leave, but the flower reminded her of the one he had given her, and she gave in. Makina somehow knew about the conversation they had at school about the mouse story, so she was clearly watching all along and only decided to kill her after she finally decided to be with him (and thus take Denji away from Makima). So it's even more tragic, as she could have gotten away if she had stuck to her decision about leaving him. Also, I'm a Denji/Power shipper and that line from the cafe owner about Denji meeting a girl right for him someday immediately before Power comes in, clearly worried about Denji and trying to cheer him up (in her own way), feeds my soul.

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, but the whole time (or at least most of it) I kept asking “Where’s Makima during all this?” And then she showed up at the end to make sure her little puppy/pawn didn’t get any funny ideas about running off and stayed on her leash.

Its heavily implied that Makima has been watching the whole time...you may notice there is a pretty big visual theme from the very beginning of the movie about Irises, about watching, about seeing from a lense perspectives and low angles...hell you may even notice that during the scene where Reze is singing Makima is swaying her cup in tune...

To be a fan of Chainsaw Man is to learn the painful lesson over and over and over and over again that you will never be free to experience joy until you kill Tatsuki Fujimoto with your bare hands LMAOOO Absolute cinema though. I remember leaving the theater with my buddy, looking him square in the face and telling him that was probably one of the most shining examples of why people still go to the cinema. Art at its highest quality.

This was so fucking Sad, they both just deserved happyness man.. but I do have hope... disclaimer don't know anything and talking out of my ass. but would that be enough to kill her actually? if she is like Denji, she can be revived right and Makima would 100% try and use her as a weapon. soo thats my theory - maybe I'm just coping.... but its in character for Makima to try and use her instead of killing her. well I hope.. she is one of the best characters and would be a shame to write her off after 1 movie

I saw this movie 4 times in theatres; definitely my movie for the year. Everyone was rooting for Reze to be with him in the end. Fujimoto while watching it was thinking "Why can't Reze meet with him again? What kind of sicko would write this?" Completely forgetting that he was the sicko from the beginning.

I’m sure someone has said this already, but monarch butterflies are poisonous to spiders. So they symbolism for them in the pool scene is Reze is the spider trapping Denji the butterfly to take him, but in her efforts to lure him in, she ends up falling in love for him as well. So while the spider traps and kills the butterfly, it dies as well, symbolizing that Reze ended up falling for Denji just as he fell for her.

Thats a good point. Aki would probably jump at the chance to gain vengeance for his pals, girl or not. She literally showed him the heads of some of closest friends and this is just a few weeks, maybe a month after losing Himeno. No wonder he didn't want to see another partner die in front of him. Reze is afterall technically a foreign agent, Rouge Devil Hybrid and terrorist who killed scores of people. Makima was totally legally justified to just confront her even if her real plans were to keep her away from Denji

I watched this in theaters in Osaka during my trip to Japan when it originally came out because I had a couple hours to kill. Best decision ever, it really is a different experience feeling that sound hit you hard during the peak moments. Chainsaw and Shark vs Typhoon gave me chills.

It’s bad when Fujimoto, the writer went to see the movie and says “I thought ‘Makima did something unnecessary.’ Then I thought ‘Why didn’t the author let Reze and Denji meet? I couldn’t sleep after that.” Same guy who also said this about the the two before the movie came out: "Reze exits the story here. I like it when the protagonist and heroine don’t end up together and I want them to carry that weight forever. That's why I absolutely didn't want Denji and Reze to get together, or for Reze to become an ally.”

i think when it came to reze singing. it felt like self soothing. she sang to distract herself as she was taking a life likely in the same way as she killed her piers in that russian red room. she sang to blank it out. that is why she is so scary in that strangulation scene, that lack of emotion is due to her being brought right back to the killer she was taught to be.
