This is never fully explained in the show or movie; But White Diamond is the first Gem and —due to her ability to access and overwrite the minds of all other Gems on top of her diamond essence being what all “lesser” gems are made from— considers her entire species, including the other Diamonds, to be flawed extensions/derivatives of herself. That’s how she knew about everything Steven and the Diamonds did without ever leaving her ship and also why she never bothered talking to them after Pink “ran away”.

This finale could’ve been so, SO much better, man. Rebecca’s pen for the whole show has been on fire, and even these final episodes (as rushed as they were) aren’t bad by any means. It’s just a letdown when you think of what we could’ve had. Still a nice enough ending though. Fuck CN for life. All my homies hate punk ass CN.

The Diamonds, especially White, should’ve faced some kind of consequences for everything they’ve done; but, considering how they are the only ones who can repair, restore, and create other gems, I have no idea how that could’ve happened within the scope of the finale. Maybe things would’ve played out differently if the show wasn’t cut short but as things are they can’t really be punished in any meaningful way without inadvertently dooming the rest of Gem-kind.

Fun fact, the Steven and Pink Steven reuniting dance was Guest animated by James Baxter, A Disney animator, worked on stuff like Beauty and the Beast (the dance scene there in particular), and the Lion King.

I also like how the past episodes hinted that White Diamond was observing Steven in each of his dreams, seeing him relive those old memories, which is why she knew so much about what he had been thinking about lately in their confrontation. That whole confrontation over Steven's new "identity" and White insisting that it's just Pink pretending, the gaslighting, mirrors the experience of a trans person coming out to an unaccepting parent too. The whole scene is chillingly done. "I only want you to be yourself; if you can't do that, I'll do it FOR YOU!" Pink Diamond *is* essentially trans into Steven, or part of him-- and it's so fitting that Steven was a fusion all along! And the ending melody Steven sings, like anyone coming out to their parents as anything they don't know how to accept: "I don’t need you to respect me, I respect me. ♪ I don’t need you to love me, I love me. ♪ But I want you to know you could know me, if you change your mind!"

I’m so glad that she enjoyed the series and I can’t wait till she gets to the epilogue series. I don’t know what it is about. All these supposed kid shows that came out in the 2010s but goddamn do they hit hard like MLP, SU, OH, ATLA, Korra, and so many others are just emotional time bombs where the longer you watch it the more you explore your own inner self.

Rose lacked the ability to fix her mistakes, she just wanted people to live their lives however they chose and got punished for it in one of the worst ways possible. And she essentially died to make steven. In a way she did fix her mistakes and make life better for everyone in the end, but she has no way of knowing

And so we arrive at what is officially the final episode. Fortunately we still have the Movie and Steven Universe Future to wrap things up, but still, this has been one hell of a ride. I loved watching Alicia react to both Steven Universe and The Owl House, two of my favourite series. Also, Loved seeing Peridot and Garnet rocking the shades that were clearly inspired by Gurren Lagann.

I've always kind of gotten the impression that gemkind was essentially a type of artificially-created magic-based robot for some advanced race that inhabited Homeworld first, and that the originators were either overthrown by an "AI/robot uprising" or simply died out from some other cause, and White rebuilt Homeworld in her own image afterwards. Basically, that gems were to some past race what pearls were to gems.

Not only is the temple modeled on Obsidian, but you can even see a big half-buried statue of Obsidian's sword underwater in the episode Steven and Connie first met, as well as in the sand where the water used to be when Lapis steals the ocean!

Oh, I don’t think they’re okay with the Diamonds at all. Not even Steven is okay with them, which is a major under statement. They’re more mad at Rose on a personal level because there was a level of trust and intimacy they had with her that they didn’t have with the Diamonds. That being said, there are not friendly with the Diamonds at all.

Not only is the scene where Steven reunites with his gem *gorgeous*. But it was animated by animation legend James Baxter. He owed Rebecca Sugar a favour, and she called it in for this! It's been wonderful to rewatch this show once again. This series has been wonderful, you always provide a great mix of media analysis, genuine heart, and sassy attitude. I know you'll love the movie. It has some of the best music in the franchise ^^

The scene where Steven and his gem were pulled apart always reminds me of when Rose was talking to him on the tape in season 1. "Steven, we can't both exist. I'm going to become half of you. And I need you to know that every moment you love being yourself, that's me, loving you and loving being you."

The pace of the final episodes was extremely, that’s what I mean. And don’t even lie and act like it wasn’t, bru. We had the reveal of white diamond and her subsequent defeat in just a few episodes. If that isn’t rushed for you, then I don’t know what is. This finale was cool, but it could’ve been way better.
