Tisura Kaiko

Hurray been waiting for this reaction im so happy Alicia has watched this

Christopher Lovejoy

Fun Fact: The voice actress of Spinel is Sarah Stiles. The same voice actress who voices Mimzy in Hazbin Hotel!

Fei Ashtear

3:39 you can see spinel in the garden at the beginning

BartonBelladonna

It’s not the return to movie reactions I was expecting but hell yeah!!!

The Amazing Digital Circus ep. 9 (on YT) And the Steven Universe Movie on the same day?! Hell yeah! ❤️‍🔥 🎶 Λ_Λ 🎶 ( ・ω・) )) (( ( つ ヽ 🎶 〉とノ ) )) (_ノ(_) 🎶 🎶

dinner and a show, I got to watch TADC finale this morning, and now This wonderful gem as well. What a great day

Darc Hart94

So I wanna say something. While I honestly believe that leaving spinel behind was the worst thing that Rose/pink has done, I do also have to point out that there was no way she would have known spinel would actually stay there, the other diamonds or gems had the ability to go to this garden and just never did, and the galaxy warp was destroyed and too risky for rose to use to see if she could find spinel. Its just a shame spinel stayed and didn't see the person rose became

(Long Discussion Piece Incoming.) On Pearl, Rebecca Sugar herself stated in a commentary on the show early on that their character arcs revolved around the different types of dependency that each of the crystal gems personalities were designed around. Steven represented Co-Dependency and his character arcs revolved around him slowly becoming his own person by growing up and maturing, learning to make decisions on his own. Learn how to do things in his own way without needing to rely on others making decisions for him. Amethyst represented Counter-Dependency which is why her personality mirrored that of a rebellious teen or young adult. One of the problems she had to learn was that she didn’t have to do things on her own. Among other things that led her to being able to work better with others. Garnet represented Independence, initially. Over time she became more nuanced, but really Garnet herself never really changed on the Dependency type front, it just shifted slightly to a better relationship between Ruby and Sapphire toward the end. Pearl though, she represented Group Dependency. Her main problem from the beginning was designed to be the type of person who felt that she was duty/honor-bound/obligated to serve the group, to be what others wanted her to be. That was Pearls own misconception. Pearl obviously never needed to, but from her perspective and instinctual programming as A Pearl. Until Rose disappeared to give birth to Steven she was still devoting everything she had to further Rose’s goals, to further the teams goals, never looking introspectively for what she herself wanted to do. Yeah it was her choice, to do things in service of others, but at the same time we can’t exactly say for certain whether that choice to be serval was really her choice or whether that’s just left over from her initial programming. Pink/Rose never controlled Pearls actions directly after the silencing about the shattering plot, that’s not what most people in the chat were getting at. They were saying that the level of dependency that Pearl suffered from through the series was unhealthy. It was to the point where even after Rose passed Pearl still felt like she had a duty to serve her interest. Even when she and Steven made up over it in Rose’s Scabbard she never stopped that like of thinking, she just adjusted her duty and obligation towards Steven/Garnets interests instead. She measured her own self worth by how good she was in service to the goals of others people. That’s what her arc was. Getting her to be more independent. The very first step, in accordance to the very episode you mentioned where Steven goes through her memories, was after Rose told her she would be disappearing to have Steven and her crying behind that hand statue over it. That led to the babysitting episode stuff where she tried to get Rose back before stopping and abiding by Rose’s wishes of having Steven. In the sword training episode with Do It For Her it also shows more of the darker side of her group dependency by flat out showing that her sense of duty/obligation and group dependency were so bad that it went into the realm of having self destructive impulses just to feel like she had a purpose within the group. Literally diving into battle head first with no regard for her own life, getting poofed over and over, getting close to being shattered each time just to prove herself to Rose and the other gems.

(Side Note: This whole essay above is why I didn’t bother commenting in the Twitch Chat when it was taken out of Emote Only. All the points would have been far too many to put into the chat there.)

Moviejunkie

There is a lot to unpack here. Spinel might be my favorite SU villain because for one, she comes in fully aware of who Steven is (No mistaking him for Rose/Pink) she has amazing rubber hose powers that kind of tie into her backstory more than you’d think, she is so intimidating that she could be a horror movie villain, and her trauma isn’t easily fixed, she thinks she can start over with Steven but she still has too many wounds from Pink that Steven will always remind her of and revealing that despite how much Pink hurt her and how much she says she wants revenge, deep down all she wants is to have her Friend back but she knows she can’t. She is so fascinating to read into as a character.

Nota-Kun Inc.

I think chat was trying to say that during pearls awakening was that pearl wasn’t being controlled but she did literally everything for Rose/Pink diamond even if she wasn’t told to do so she’d do it without question like there was a scene in the show that showed pearl didn’t even care about her own body when it came to rose. So her becoming “independent” is like her finally making choices fully for her and not because of rose

Fei Ashtear

"Mom disappeared" doesn't mean pink's shattering. It means when she died to make Steven.

Blooocki :3

Google "The Amazing digital circus" and press the easter egg button showing up

Fei Ashtear

A major issue Pink had is that she didn't really understand that people like Spinel and Pearl would do anything for her, and do it in a very literal way. Pearl spent the entire series learning that she needs to put herself as a priority too. In the wedding episode fighting the diamonds she was still telling herself she was doing it for him, until Steven reminded her to do it for herself too.

Siphoned

The point is that even in the form of rose quartz she was still pink diamond so pearl could never fully be free until Steven was born. It didn’t matter if she didn’t order her around she still could not disobey her diamond.

OfficiallyGames

Horimiya Missing Peices, isn't character regression - they act like they've always acted. Atleast give it a chance before you make an opinion on something you don't know, you're just overreacting to what you think it is. Especailly when the ending gives more than how season 1 ended.

VernDaDemon

I can't wait for you to start Steven universe future, it gives so much inherent lore to the world of Steven universe and really has some great character development

Tomatoisjp

Oh boy. This poor woman is NOT ready for Future.

Darc Hart94

So fun fact. The singer for steg and the singer for opal are married. They often do duets

TSP247

I never noticed that steven had The Brick that was that Playstation 2.

nervouspirate

How absolutely optimistic of you to assume your 27 year old child can get a mortgage. Welcome to America btw

PoFtheDeviant

That’s all true. On the other hand, on a personal note, I don’t view her spurring on Pink Diamonds impulsivity and giving ideas about going down to the kindergarten and becoming Rose as Pearls first seeds of independence. It very much is still in line with serving her purpose. She saw that her Diamond was unhappy and came up with those ideas to satisfy Pink Diamonds in the moment. She very much was doing what she was built for, just exercising it in a more unique way than what had been done by a pearl in the past. She was still making those suggestions to better fit her programming as a Pearl rather than doing so out of any interest in the lives of organic matter that she herself harbored. Pink/Rose fostered that uniqueness for sure, but Pearl was still making decisions based on what she believed Pinks/Roses wants and desires were, not her own. Gems form already knowing their purpose and come implanted with a drive to do something that at least harkens back to that original purpose even if it isn’t exact. Pearl never stopped performing her original duties. She was a criminal because she was on the rebel team, but she didn’t join out of interest for organic life or even for the liberation of gem kind, she joined for the sake of pleasing Rose/Pink, the gem that she was assigned to. Pearl did learn to have an appreciation for life in the same way much later on when Steven was born, but even in flashbacks as late as Greg dating Rose Pearl still didn’t really see the value in them that Rose did. She flat out viewed Greg as a fad or shiny new toy that she believed Rose would grow bored of eventually, just like how the Diamonds viewed Connie in the Homeworld episodes. Pearl saw Greg less like a person and more of Roses toy. Pearl went along with the dating because it was what Rose wanted to do. In short, She prodded the start of the rebellion by accident when trying to please Pink. And, as evidenced by the low opinion of humans that she had during the Greg dating days, she didn’t really care all that much for organic life, really, until Steven came along. (Edit: I forgot to mention the fusion incident post Garnet. This was yet another incident of her trying to please Rose. While I’m sure the blushing was evidence of Pearl also enjoying the process of trying to do something taboo, I believe that this just goes back to my main point more than anything. She only tried fusing after seeing how excited the thought of two different gem types fusing made Rose feel. So she wanted to show Rose what it might feel like, even if at that point in time it was considered improper. Rose asked if Pearl could imagine what it must feel like. That’s when Pearl tried to do it and jumped into action. Trying once again to fulfill her purpose in life of pleasing the gem that she was assigned to. Pearl basically viewed these minuscule moments and requests as orders and tried filling them to the best of her ability. I still, personally, believe that all this is evidence against her trying to be fully independent.)

Darc Hart94

Pink probably wasn't that agitated with spinel, it was more that she wanted to be seen as an adult and taken seriously by the diamonds. And unfortunately she didn't feel like she could do what the other diamonds do with spinel. And I still refuse to believe NOBODY ever looked at the damn garden becayse clearly gems knew it existed

Faroth

The garden memory is what you must remember from the show: as long as a gem is loyal go their diamond, they cnt physically go against their orders So spinel couldnt physically move from there until she saw that Pink was gone, like a toxic relationship, she was waiting for the other person to come back because the other person, pink, didnt let things clear between them. Thats also why when steven fused with his dad, it wasnt just pearl who waked up, it was also spinel, steven was her friend and let her for someone else, breaking the connection, which is exactly how she set herself free the 1st time, by realizing that pink left her in the garden to go with some "other friends I for one think that spinel shouldn't stay with the diamonds, but the broken pearl? it might help her to stay with her, because... Reasons...

Zabinkz

Now it is time for Steven Universe Future

Lackey2

Fun fact! Steg's VA is married to Opal's VA!

KokoPelly

I always saw Pearl's part as more of a - now that "Pink Diamond" is gone Pearl no longer has to play the part of a perfect servant. That was when she chose to become a rebel, her own person

Darc Hart94

I will stand that you could view steven universe future as steven finding out that he is arguably worse than his mom was at times

Vivica the witch

The Diamonds really just "Girl you live like this" 'd Steven

IvI

Steven Universe really is just "Raise your hand if you weren't emotionally scarred by Pink Diamond." lol. Really fun series though, I enjoyed finally getting to watch it through the reactions.

Cosmosias

Steg is the father, mother, and son, he truly is the family guy.

Vivica the witch

Fair warning, Steven Universe Future made me ugly cry like 4 times

Fei Ashtear

I feel like Pink was still mentally around 10-12 when she left Spinel. That age mentally where you're trying to show you're not a little kid anymore. She thought she couldn't have Spinel around because she was too childish. It's one in a long series of mistakes Pink makes while growing as a person over the series.

Miklar Sihn

59:00 i think you are making Pearl a bit too independent here. I would argue her ideas came from her adapting to better serve Pink. So she was still trying to serve her. Pink wasn't trying to control her, but she was still being controlled... Because it was in her nature. She wasn't being made to serve, but she was serving anyway.

Bloodredtyrant

Oh no, Alicia listened to "Other Friends" before the movie? That's such a shame. I was looking forward to seeing her reaction to "Other Friends" most of all. I hate it when people spoil things! Oh well, Alicia's reaction to "Drift Away" was another song I was really looking forward to and I got exactly what I wanted out of that. The movie as a whole is such a tearjerker and I loved Alicia's reaction to the whole thing.

Harus Streit

About the whole Pearl thing- Even in this movie, Greg is telling her she doesn't need to help. (Practically an order depending on the way you see it) Yet Pearl still does, because that's how Pearls work, they follow unwaveringly whoever they were assigned to. Pearl followed Pink after she turned into Rose, and even after they both talked about leaving the Pearl follower aspect behind, Pearl has 'always' followed her. The gem itself is kinda crucial on that. Throwing the jungle gym at the babysitter, doing Steven's chores as the 'maid' a pearl would normally be doing, whenever Pearl was nearby when something bad was happening she flew in instantly to save 'her diamond'. "What does it matter it's already done, now I've got to be there for her son.", during Connie's training: "You shouldn't be anywhere near the fight, you're too important.", and the last off the top of my head being when Lion was suffocating Steven in the mane and she was just there watching to save him. "I watch you when you sleep sometimes. And by sometimes I mean a lot." With the context of Pearl being the actual Pearl that belonged to a Pink then Rose, rewatching puts a huge change to everything that she has ever said or done for the sake of Steven.

Faroth

46:25 Look at the screen of peridot computer, she has a paused game of camp hearts and a video of camp hearts 😂🤣♥️

Lilly’s of The Void

Yeah it’s explained from WOG that Pink though so low of herself that she though Spinel would just leave after a bit! Imagine the world if spinel actually was what Pink thought she was?

K!ngonion

It’s sad bc I genuinely don’t think pink thought having a conversation with spinel was ever an option. We saw she kinda didn’t take people/gems seriously up until Greg told her she needed to talk to him like a real person

Darc Hart94

It's always a shame, Pink was so used to the diamonds belittling her and not taking her seriously enough that she wasn't used to regular gems just....listening

Demi

"I didn't think it was to the point of that, fukin 6000 years being stuck in one spot kind of abandoned." Yea really puts the song "other friends" into more perspective especially the line "Who am I? Who am I? What are you even saying, I'm the loser of the game you didn't know you were playing." Just brutal.

Faroth

56:59 it wasn't there, sshe literally sing about it at the staart, saying even when she become rose she never stopped serving her as her pearl, it was until she became steven tht pearl was finally "free"

Elias Cristerna

I can never hear Drift Away without thnking of When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2. Except it's more fucked because Pink Diamond knew her toy could talk and move and didn't even bother to donate her.

Jake Hansen

I think with Pearl's missing piece, the way I saw it, it wasn't about being controlled by Rose or following orders. It was about thinking about herself, and even after the fake shattering, Pearl still was only thinking about Rose. It wasn't until after Steven that Pearl finally had to think about herself and doing things for herself. During the end of the series, there was the moment during their fight with Yellow and Blue where Steven reminded Pearl to do things for herself, not just for others. And I think the song in this movie, specifically the part about being independent together was the part that really reminded Pearl of that lesson. Which allowed her to get her missing piece and get her memories back. But that's just my take on it.

Verdigree

So with Pearl, the arc being recreated isn't her distant past with Pink changing, but the recent past of 16 years ago, Rose ceasing to exist once Steven did, and the realizations she had after that she had still built her whole identity after being totally dependent on Pink to being a different kind of being dependent on Rose

Okarun

queen... thats a question for you... is... how do you not scare richard...? 3:21 Thats my bulmaaaaa dead ass!

Faroth

Funfact: the explanation given on why spinel won so easily the 1st fight but losed the 2nd fight was because of who she is, she is a gem made to play, and in the 1st fight, she was palying with them, while in the 2nd fight she was actively fight them to hurt them, so she lost because inside, she didnt want them to hurt them, just to play with someone, and in her 3rd fight against steven, she starts with "i dont wanna play anymore" because she realized that, just like steven told her "only you can make that change"

Mr Evol

On Pearl's awakening: in the series finale when Steven is in the weird mind space jumping through people, Pearl is saying "I'll do it for her." When Steven jumps through her she starts saying "I'll do this for me!" It isn't about the literal disappearance of Rose, it is about her having to let Rose go.

Hank Kleinberg

The idea with Pearl is that even when she had "rebelled" with Rose, she was still doing everything Rose wanted, not what she wanted. It was only once Rose "died" and turned into Steven that she started to think about what she wanted.

Okarun

26:12 THEN WATCH UZAKI! THE DAY SHE DOES ILL CHANGE MY TIER FOR A WHILE! it has great jokes, romance, art, design, english voice act, characters chemistry and ohhhh so much fun! i laughed till i couldn't stop crying one time watching it!

Eric

To be honest, after SU I allways wondered what they would do with the Diamonds, cause let's not forget that they were space genocides at the start, and I never though they would gave them the "rich bitchy aunt" vibe, but I loved it every second of it and only are sad that they didn't made it earlier XD

mewtwotwo2222

this is still one of my favorite animated movies ever i think i think its a perfect series finale if we didnt get future i mean

Reaper Scythe

Considering how much she cried in this, she's not gonna survive Future. Hope she stays hydrated.

Amorphous rodent

See, you might be missing the point a little with pearl. Unlike Pink, Pearl never ACTUALLY rebelled until Rose was gone. Gems are created for their diamonds, to serve their diamonds. Pearls ESPECIALLY. Therefore, when Pink wanted to rebel, Pearl just went along with it. Even though they broke free from the system, Pearl never stopped following her diamond, even if her purpose for doing so changed. Not until Rose disappearing did Pearl actually have to confront the idea of being her own person FOR HERSELF, as up until that point she was only really "being herself" FOR Rose. Hence the entire "Mr. Greg" episode (among many) where Pearl's entire conflict is not knowing who to be without Rose.

Mike

Re: Pearl's regeneration. I think the main thing to keep in mind is that Pink Diamond/Rose and Pearl had an inherent power imbalance. Sure, Rose treated her with a lot of respect and tried to make them equals, but that doesn't change the fact that there's an order keeping her silent in those events. The best thing I can think about is two characters in Infinity Train season 3: Simon and Grace. They're friends, they think the same, they get along well, Grace is the leader and Simon is her right hand man. Eventually there's a conflict between ideologies, Grace *orders* Simon to stand down, to which he asks "are you pulling rank on me?" That was never an issue before, but it suddenly becomes much clearer that there's a solid gap in their friendship. Pearl also says it in her song. She was 'free' in a theoretical sense, but she never worked through her devotion and 'programming' to make her own decisions. It isn't until after Rose is gone that she's hit with the idea of being herself for herself. She grew as a gem under Rose, but she became more of her own person after being freed from the gag order and the person she was programmed to serve.

Marcello Reyes

Gems are supposed to be for specific purposes. Following their betters is what they are designed for. Plus, while Pink didn’t view herself as important, others under her, pearl, spinel, jasper, etc. would do everything for her. Independence is NOT natural for gems. It had to be learned.

Ebofa

The whole Spinel situation reminds me of one of the maxims of the Steven Universe fandom. Which is honestly one I think is fascinating from a writing standpoint. We know Rose at the end of her character development, and then we work backwards to all the things she developed from. And so it becomes easy to forget who she ended up as. And you just don´t see that very often.

Golden Witch Beatrice

Completed unrelated but I recently saw a Steven Universe Backrooms post where “Let Us Adore You” plays on loop but it was just Blue Diamonds parts. So both times the song played in the reaction made a shiver go up my spine😅

Tim Capone

It's hard to explain how incredible it was to see this when it released. I started watching SU near the beginning of the second season and watched every episode I could on the day it released. It was a dark time for me but it gave me joy and got me to begin understanding that I'm non-binary. This was like a culmination of that and I can feel my eyes welling up right from the start. I'm glad I get to see you watch it for the first time.

Mike

Re: Spinel's abandonment. What Pink did was fucked up, full stop. There's really no denying it. I feel like there are three things to keep in mind, though. 1) At this point in time, Pink was still being abused by Blue Diamond. You can see the flashback when she locks Stevonnie in the tower after the ballroom. There's no way Pink could have developed the proper communication skills because, in the flashback, she was abused and indoctrined into the Diamonds being an all powerful authority 2) Pink hadn't developed that sense of compassion for all gems. It is fucked up to say, but Spinel was nothing but a toy. You don't keep every childhood toy you have. Some of them you stop using, others you lose. Trying to be as mature as the others wanted her to be, Pink gave up that bit of 'childhood' to become what was expected of her. 3) By the time Rose would have remembered Spinel, it would have been too late. We see her not taking anything seriously. There was no way to guarantee that Spinel would have adjusted to the Rose identity. Not to mention the war was already in motion, so any sudden activity in the garden would have signaled the diamonds and been considered suspicious. The warp pads were being destroyed to avoid being harmed by Homeworld. This doesn't make it right, but hurt people hurt people. Spinel was the unfortunate victim of that. Somtimes you grow as a person and It's too late to make amends with those who you've hurt in the past, so you do your best for the ones you have and will meet. Seeing Rose's development in reverse was a genius idea that came out exceedingly flawed. There was so much growth that gets ignored because of the things she did. She was a different, still flawed person when she died.

Poet

Pearl codependency was holding her back from first having her own identity she would always following her its not control its choosing herself remember in the sword training of Connie she would constantly Sacrificing herself rose never choosing herself that process started when rose was gone

ZenCyn

Just wanted to say, watching SU through your reactions has made me appreciate the series a lot more than I did. Probably in part that you regularly binged the series while CN gave, like, 5 episodes every 6+ months at a point. But the little discussions and dissection of moments were the main thing. Just wanted to share how much fun this has been and looking forward to more.

John

Pearl was stuck making her whole identity about someone else. It was her purpose as Pink Diamond's Pearl. Once Pink was 'gone' and the hierarchy with it, her identity was gone, too. the easiest thing for her to construct a new sense of identity is with the only framework she understood. she may have chosen it out of love, but she still chose servitude. she went from a dictator's secretary to a more romantic Rebel's Knight, but it was still about Rose. even after Rose gives up her existence for Steven, Pearl is constantly serving him instead. when she has the crisis where she tricks Garnet into fusing because she feels "useless on her own" she still hasn't done anything major for herself. It was just transference, until she slowly became her own gem with Steven's help. Rose couldn't have done that because she wasn't emotionally intelligent at all. it took her REALIZING that Rose/Pink is really gone gone with "It's Over Isn't It" for things to change for her. I Relate. raised with knight and samurai and the romantic notion of noble heroes, mixed with the toxic levels of stoic masculinity about providing, and a deep love for women (that i know sapphics understand). the projection of "I love her, and i just want HER to be happy. and i'll do what it takes to make that happen, i don't matter nearly as much as HER." the Knight and their Princess/Queen. I'm sure many other people relate, too. especially single parents. also the joke is Pearl was a "M'Lady" incel xDD

TEKUZIII

She cried one time here😭

XanderDPanda

Connie really needed to sit down to explain narrative tropes to Steven, that boy spend the first 10 minutes of the movie poking Murphy with a stick.

KatzRKewl

Kudos to Spinel's va, they put their full effort into her lines

Periwinkle Emily

Imo the pearl arc is more supposed to be analogous between her current service to Greg and past romantic dependency on Pink/Rose instead of a direct parallel that implies her relationship with rose was one of service

S Le

I kind of hate Spinel. The anger towards Steven for not knowing exactly how to deal with Spinel is unwarranted to that degree. It’s not Steven’s responsibility to fix Spinel’s emotional abandonment issues. Also, Steven is 16 years old, not a mature adult like many of the viewers. Spinel also tried to kill him and is going to kill all life on the planet for something he didn’t do and the planet did not deserve. It’s not everyone else’s fault that her programming made her an follow orders like that without thinking for herself to not do it… it’s also interesting that not even Pink Diamond expected her to just stand there for thousands of years. I think the yelling and berating Steven was very uncalled for. How about some sympathy for him, the character we’ve been following all these years instead some rando mass murderer. He’s always bending over backwards trying to fix other people’s issues, including those who wanted to kill him. Of course, fixing is not how you handle people and your friends, but what do you expect from him? That’s how these gem authority figures in his life have conditioned him to think. I also don’t blame him for not wanting Spinel as a friend. What is she going to do? Trigger is PTSD repeatedly? He is emotionally spent and, again, he’s 16. This is adds more to his own emotional trauma and problems.

AnotherWeeb

"once pink diamond was gone" isn't talking about pink becoming rose. When steven was born, pink literally ceased to exist. just like when steg fused, greg ceased to exist. Pearl is forced to be independent and make her own choices when the one she's in service to is someone that doesn't exist. Pearl didn't help pink/rose because she was independent, she did it because she was directly ordered to. Even the initial "become a quartz" idea was a command. She was told to imagine pink down there in the kindergarten, and projected that imagination. Then she was told to imagine if pink fit in with the other gems, and projected the imagination of pink fitting in with the quartzes I don't think we ever see an instance of pearl having a single thought of her own before steven is born. Even AFTER steven was born, there was a large percentage of the time where pearl subjected herself to garnet's orders rather than making her own choices

AnotherWeeb

@Fei, Agreed. Kinda like how white diamond can't imagine that other people aren't just lesser versions of her, pink can't imagine that other gems would be less independent and self-confident than her. It's a blindspot in her worldview that just never got challenged for who knows how long.

Periwinkle Emily

Cannot wait to see your reactions to steven universe future

BakaSama

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve listened to “Other Friends”. I absolutely love that Song and Spinel as a character. I think that’s why up until now I always felt like Steven was dumping Spinel off on the Diamonds and not taking responsibility for her. In hindsight though, I think that’s why was because I was so upset by her treatment by Pink Diamond and wanted her to be a part of the squad that I totally missed that going to live with the Diamonds actually met her desires and needs as well as those of the Diamonds.

Speed1247

The thing with pearl is she may not be controlled by rose like a servant but everything she did for a long time was explicitly for rose, she never truly did things for herself. It's not a prison rose made for her but one pearl made for herself, which she only recently broke out of. (Probably not the best person to explain this, but it's my interpretation of this)

Kawaii Edgelord

Alicia is so smart, she gets things i didn't until i rewatched. And honestly a debate stream where Alicia argues about her takes would be pretty fun, but i don't think almost any of the people who would show up to debate her would deserve such grace.

Jokin_Jake

The movie is trying to point out how Pearl was controlled by Pink Diamond. It was saying that Pearl did everything for Rose to an unhealthy extent. She never did anything for herself. "Everything I did, I did it for her." sums up Pearl's biggest hurdle as a character. By the end of the series Pearl became someone who did things for herself instead of her love for Rose. Rose "controlling" Pearl was the issue. The issue was that Pearl did EVERYTHING for Rose. When Steven was a baby in the flashback episode you can see how directionless Pearl was when they kidnapped him. Taking Greg away from Pearl via fusion in the movie was their way of replicating that moment.

Bologna Amputation

And in the case of Pearl, it's not even a case of 'would do anything for her', but more of a 'is biologically programmed to follow your orders'.

MattTOB

@AnotherWeeb Plus, the other Diamonds spent SO long belittling, berating, and even *abusing* her, that she thought nobody could care about her SO deeply that they'd (for example) blast a planet with a corrupting light, stand in a single spot for 6,000 years, or go into a depressive mourning spiral after her death.

MattTOB

You're half correct; Ted Leo (Steg) and Aimee Mann (Opal) do work together (they even briefly formed a band called "The Both" from 2014-16), but they were never married; Ted Leo is married to Jodi Buonanno, and Aimee Mann has been married to Michael Penn since '97.

Darc Hart94

Huh. Guess I don't know where the marriage thing came from then.

King'sBard

You watched this and WALL-E right after TADC?! why would you do that to yourself? (AND US 😭)

Noire K. Vector

You can really see the nod to old Cartoon Network shows through the movie's intro, Sadie Killer and Suspects, and some other examples. The intro to the movie brought to mind some Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry openings with the music leading into the title card for the episode. Sadie Killer and the Suspects have a sound and style that's very reminiscent to Josie and the Pussycats. What immediately comes to mind is this commercial for Boomerang where Josie and the Pussycats play their show's theme song through different genres that have evolved since the characters were created.

Cupcake Valkyrie

It's also kinda bittersweet when you realize that Spinel is how the Diamonds saw Pink, which is a big part of why they never took her seriously.

Random3x

a bit i appreciated in the early part of this film is when spinel first arrives. Pearl says "she can't be serious?". Which could be taken as Spinel should be incapable of being serious.

Lynn

Pink was made to feel like she was never good enough, so in an attempt to be taken more seriously herself she distanced herself from Spinel, causing Spinel to feel like SHE wasn't good enough. Pink didn't intend to hurt Spinel, she was just too blinded by her own insecurity to realize that Spinel genuinely valued her friendship.

Sam Marsh

An interesting aspect of Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond is that we the audience see her character development in reverse. From the beginning of the series we knew her as the gem who strived to become the best possible version of herself she could be, but as the series progressed we saw more of her past self, from when she was at her worst. Spinel suffered so much from her abandonment, and it’s clear that she developed PTSD from her experience. Her journey of healing will be a long one, but she deserves to more on and find that she deserves to be loved.

Julio Castillo

Alicia... i think you misunderstood a few things. First.... when Steven and Amethyst talk about Rose disappearing they're not talking about the "shattering" of Pink Diamond, they're talking about the moment Rose gave up her form to give birth to Steven. Second.... like some comments have already said.... you're seriously underestimating just how much gems like Pearl and Spinel were devoted to Pink/Rose..... Yes, Pearl learned to care about the Earth and Freedom..... but it was only after years of fighting alongside Rose. In the Beginning the sole reason why Pearl Rebelled against Homeworld is because of her love/loyalty for Pink Diamond. She was created to serve her Master and it took literal thousands of years of rebelling and learning to finally find worth and meaning in herself and in other things that aren't her Master. She even mentions it in the opening song.... "We became our fantasy, And I was sure she set me free, But in the end, I guess I never left her side" The part that you're misunderstanding about Pearl is that... she didn't choose to love or be codependent of Pink/Rose, those weren't choices... at least not fully. Pearls are literally PROGRAMMED to serve and love their Masters, they are made that way... you can clearly see it when she's reset and now has Greg as her designated Master. All of the character development that Pearl went through during the show was her learning to break away from that programming.

Jared Allen

Man I love the Steven Universe Movie. I do feel the story line is a bit strange, Pink leaving Spinel in the garden is honestly one of the most cruel things that any character in the show has done so it really puts her in perspective. But other than that its genuinely a high point for me. Favorite songs are Spinels song in the garden (it always brings tears to my eyes for some reason) and the final "Live with us in the palace" with Spinel since its a really feel good moment and introduces a happy ending for Spinel and the diamonds.

Leticia

I like that you see Pearl and Pink's relationship in such a beautiful way honestly, I don't agree with all of it, but it's a really cool way to think about it

Adrian

I think a big thing you might be misremembering or misunderstanding was that a huge part of Pearl's character arc was learning to be independent of Rose. Even if Rose's last 'Official Command As a Diamond' was to never speak of it again doesn't mean that Pearl didn't still feel she had to obey Rose. Her part in Here We Are In The Future even referenced that she she *thought* she'd been set free but she hadn't, not truly, because she was still following Rose, still obeying Rose, her own needs/wants/desires always secondary to Rose. You can't just undo eons of a programming to serve just like that. Yes, she loved Rose and that was a big part of it, but Rose was still her diamond, and in a way she was still compelled to obey her, still instinctively left to believe "Rose is Always Right, you can Never disobey Rose." because she was never truly free until Steven was born. It doesn't matter if Rose wasn't trying to control her, or if Rose even meant to still command/order her, because Pearl still, subconsciously, felt compelled to obey her, felt dependent on her.

Joseph CroenianGamer

yeah but the power pink had over pearl never went away, 5000 years after pearl coul not disobey an order, she was not free, she just had an owner that gave her less orders, that allowed her to be herself almost completly, yeah, but thats the key word, almost. like, even if you dont get the order, having someone that can comand you to your very core and being that decides to not do it its not the same as not having that someone that can control you like a puppet, at least thats my understanding.

The line "I'm the loser of the game you didn't know you were playing" goes so damn hard.

ok i paused at, 1:01:58, but i have to say I fully agree with Alicia, I am a rose quarts/pink (mostly rose) defender" because I feel rose is mostly hated because we see her character development in reverse, so I think people tend to over think that and think Pink was malicious when giving her final command to pearl, when reality I think people misinterpreted her, I think don't realize is pink never felt the same way pearl felt about Rose, and so she never truly understood how Pearl felt Abt her. at least not until she started feeling similar feelings Abt Greg, and I especially think people don't realize with spinel that like, it would make sense for pink to not try and save her. I see so many people question why rose never when back for her but they don't realize she couldn't go back. pearl only happened to be pink's remaining servant because she was the one who showed pink earth's beauty, Spinel was only ever a toy to pink before she was given her own colony, if rose was to try and get spinel from Pink's privet garden's it would clearly give too much away. it would have been suspicious if pearl (the only pearl we've seen to have a multi color design ((she has pink, blue, yellow and white in her design)) showing she was designed by the three older diamonds for pink, after pink's original pearl was taken away) so if rose tried to get the rare gem what was specifically made for pink it would draw too much suspision too what really happened to pink

Oliver Norcom

I’m so happy to finally see your reaction to this movie, I became a member for this reaction alone. 💙

Mune_Lite

this is me at 1:03:07 after listen for a second more and realizing Alica is actually good at understanding media ((I'm still in defense mode from fighting against those who only watched Lily Orchared's video) so I may have over explained my thoughts lol

Ja’Maine Lee

59:18 well as long as pearl failed to come to terms that he attachment to rose was really unhealthy, she wouldnt learn to truly be her own

Koga Wolfe

I love Spinel and her songs. I've watched the clips of them many times.

Alp

ok i just gotta jump in rn and say: TRUE KIND OF LOVE might be the greatest song of this entire series. Zach's part is my favorite im a lil too drunk rn to make a better comment so i just wanted to say: that song? fucking PEAK.

Silver318

Another point about Pink "abandonment" of Spinel, additionaly to Pink problem with self worth and to be taken seriously, Yellow response to Spinel "joke" about being only 6000 years alone is quite revelatory: the Diamonds lived for millions of years, and as such, they did not really see it as such a big issue, even tough it probably was most of Spinel life time until now. So even if it's not really a good reason for Pink to have done so, it also show that the Diamonds, including Pink, were not really on the same mental space as the Gems under them, tough Pink did develop a bit in this department on Earth. I would wager that if Pink did not have her mind set to be on Earth, with all the she learned from it, she would have eventually returned to her garden with Spinel, and probably apologize. But she would not have encountered Greg in this alternative timeline, and that would not be "Steven Universe" anymore.

Chase heo

You know Im actually surprised alicha didn't make a one piece reference when seeing spinel using that big fist attack on Steven cause come on that was obviously a one piece reference

Carlos

Unironically one of favorite musicals ever. Every song is so catchy and memorable, really awesome way to wrap the show before the epilogue. Glad you liked it too

Kathryn McMurtry

The good and bad thing about seeing Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz' character development in reverse is that the freshest version of her we end up seeing is the worst version of her. We don't see her slowly develop into the best version of herself, she starts out that way with us. Instead we see all the horrible things she left behind. All of the mistakes she made before becoming a better person and the consequences that come from those mistakes. She can't go back and save Spinel from the actions of who she used to be as PD, because if she did it would undo all of the hard work she put in to save the Earth and what gems that she could as Rose. Likewise she wouldn't have understood that putting Spinel in one place and abandoning her was wrong before she came to Earth and started changing. That's the tragic part, even if she realized / remembered and wanted to try and help Spinel, she had no way of doing it. Not without potentially sacrificing everyone and everything on earth.

Thinkace

its a common feat the blacks have so its fine xD

Justin Scott

Yup this is the begining of really peeling back Rose/Pink, demyologizing her, taking her off the pedestal that most of the show put her on, making us realize more and more that while not malicious, her ignorance would go on to negatively impact those around her and make just as many problems for others as the others, and her impatience would only make things worse. Wanting to help without ever learning how to help is ultimately almost as bad as doing nothing at all, there is a right and wrong way to do things and Pink just kept doing things the wrong way.

Darc Hart94

Showing that Pink/Rose is flawed is fine, hell its probably one of the best things in the show, I just hate that the show itself tries to make it out like she was evil and always in the wrong. Like they even treated her trying to protect earth as a bad thing.

goose

"you used her" she's tryna kill 8.3 billion people bruh i think there's bigger fish to fry than her feelings

JayKayNinja369

This movie has reminded me that I always felt that pink diamond/rose quartz had reverse character development. Because the first time we see her in the show, it's at the end of her story. And the last time we saw her was the beginning of her story. But a better video to explain this than me , is called: Pink diamond: character development in reverse by the roundtable

Waistband Hiker

I knew she’d react like that to grown up Steven 🤣

Waistband Hiker

An important thing to remember is that we will never know Pink’s side of the story. It’s awful that Spinel was left behind, but we are only seeing the story from her perspective

Craig

Pearl didnt have her independence when she rebelled she literally "Did it for her" there is a whole song about. EVERYTHING pearl does until about its over isnt it is purely for rose. She doesnt do anything for herself. Alicia doesnt seem to remember pearls character

Coryn Silver

No, no. Pearl literally only rebelled cuz it was for Rose. Pearl did not gain a real sense of self until Steven was born and Rose was really, truly gone

DeAnthony Potts

Spinel made the hottest tracks on the movie

Bunni

This is what I love about Steven and Pink Diamond/Rose. They’re so much more alike than Steven likes to take credit. He showed he can be manipulative like Pink/Rose was but the difference is he corrects. While Rose has indeed grown up she never took accountability of her actions. I think I said this in another one of your videos is that it’s crazy how we see a regression of Rose’s character development, from this “rebel hero” to a manipulative dictator. But it also shown she had changed and grown. Just wish she took accountability of her actions.

Coryn Silver

Pink Diamond and Spinel's relationship is quite literally like a child growing out of their toys. Pink wanted to prove she was mature enough for her own colony, and thus left Spinel, who she only thought of as a Toy, behind. It's impossible to know if Pink meant for her to leave and be her own Gem at some point, but it was clear that in her youth, Pink did not care about anyone but herself. Not until Earth.

Jayden

yay!

Grim

The main reason why Pearls recovery is rooted in independence is because despite Rose never giving her orders she was still the person Pearl was made to serve. She definitely cared about the earth, but the main reason she rebels is because it's what Pink diamond wanted at the time. Let me put it in human psychology terms: Let's say you have a person that grows up in an environment where they only feel safe when they do what they are told by their parents, Even if the parents change and no longer make that person feel unsafe the child still feels like they need to Obey every "Command" they are given or their childhood programming will set off danger signals. Example: "Can you run to the store to pick up some groceries" That person's system will hear "Go to the store and get these groceries." Since Rose was still Pink diamond (Aka the person she was made to serve) she had full authority over Pearl Regardless of if she wanted that authority or not

Adam & Miranda

He is magic he can tapdance in flip flops

Technical_Analysis

When it comes to the relationships of Pearl and Spinel with Rose, a big thing that drives them is they were essentially hard wired to be devoted to Pink Diamond, so even after Pink becomes Rose, Peals devotion to her is practically unchanged. I'd even argue that Pearl was still fully devoted to Pink/Rose even after the latter gave up her form to give Steven her gem. It isn't until Steven learns the truth that Pearl is finally able to speak about it freely, that's the moment she's finally truly and fully free of Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz, as she no longer has any commands she's hard wired to follow. At first it was just an unrequited love Pearl had for Rose, then we have her jealousy of Greg, then we find out it's a hard wired devotion, Pearls love for Pink/Rose has layers of tragedy, each more tear jerking than the last. The tragic thing for Spinel, is by the time Rose realized just how wrong what they did to Spinel was, it was probably too late to do anything without risking the Diamond Authority finding out Rose is still alive, or the Crystal Gems finding out Rose is Pink, neither of which are an option to her. It feels like it goes from Pink abandoning Spinel, to Rose sacrificing Spinel, and poor Spinel's just standing there for 6,000 years, a sacrificial pawn in a game she didn't even know was being played.

Coryn Silver

What bothers me to no end about this movie is that Spinel was abandoned not once, but TWICE by the same gem. Steven wanted her to find someone who loved her, but he very adamantly didn't want to be the one to love her, and just... passed her on to the Diamonds. And like, sure she'll be loved and adored, and she'll get the healing she needs. But she wanted Steven and he just didn't want her. He didn't even help her to help her, he helped her so he could use her, which feels not just out of character, but so out of touch. He had no plan for what to do about her after she shut the Injector off. I can genuinely say i do not like this movie as a whole. It has a lot of great moments and amazing songs, but the message just doesn't feel right to me, idk. Spinel deserved so much better, and at least she's getting better with her new family, which was genuinely my favorite part of the movie. Sorry I have a lot of complicated emotions with this movie that i didn't have with the rest of the show.

Adam & Miranda

I don't want to sound like an asshole, I have just watched this like a hundred times. I think You are misunderstanding how pearl got her memories back, when they say "Rose disappeared" They are not talking about pink diamond's supposed shattering they are talking about Steven being born. So Greg disappearing works

jim remer

the problem wasn't that she loved her the problem was the obsession of her that drove Pearl to never view herself at Rose's level which hurt Rose and made the love between them stagnant she put Rose on a pedestal and never truly joined her because of her servant like mindset she never truly became free until Steven. The moment was meant to clear up her obsession not her love in my opinion anyway

Lexy

I don't know. I didn't like the end when I originally watched this. Spinel just goes back to being the fool and the diamonds don't change, just go back to focusing on one thing from Pink. Feels like everything the movie went through just got undone to me.

Patrick McIntyre

It's been years since I watched su future and at this point I honesty don't remember it that well, but I do remember it being so bad that I dropped it and then heard that it ended horribly. I hope at the very least that alicia likes it...

Lulu sissy

I agree with alicia, the song frames it super weird. The lyric "No one can push you around" frames the rose / pearl relationship in a way that just isn't accurate.

bismuthalienated

I like how spinel never went back to her previous form. She is learning to heal, but the scars of her abandonment will always be there with her. But she can learn to be okay with that and be happy again.

Jeff

I think the whole thing with Pearl gaining independence from Rose/Pink disappearing is that, yes, Pearl gained her freedom with Pink from the other Diamonds, but she wasn't truly independent. She continued to serve and devote herself to Pink, and it was of her own choice and a noble cause, but she still very much valued Pink over herself and continued to rely on Pink for most things in her life. All of the Crystal Gems did to some extent. Which is why they were so lost with Pink's disappearance when Steven came along, and none more than Pearl. Not knowing what to do with your life without the person you are dependent on isn't being independent. That's why the song is "Independent Together". Pearl was always too dependent on Pink, obsessively so. You could say Pearl didn't truly gain independence from Pink until she could finally unshackle herself of the promise and secret she was made to keep, shift her focus onto herself for once, and figure out how to finally move on.

Ed-96

I mean the lyric isn’t completely inaccurate, Rose and Pearl’s relationship was always and was always gonna be imbalanced just due to the fact that Pearl was literally made for Pink. While Rose/Pink didn’t purposefully or maliciously push Pearl around it’s not like she ever had a choice to the point where her order of never speaking of her “shattering” made it so even after 6000 years and her death she physically could not disobey her

Sean Kibbe

God I hate how her chat was spammming for her to put them back in emote dungeon during the Pearl discussion. If you can’t handle 5 mins of her discussing what she could be wrong or right on with chat then just go watch the movie yourself. I swear some fans are so hardcore fans that they think any disagreement with what Alica is saying is hate

Joey245

I love how half the chat was arguing with Alicia and the other half was like "LOCK US UP AGAIN!" And even the comments here are all about that XD Personally, I thought her take on Pearl's recovery was fine?

Jordan Barnes

I’m on the third day of my period and trying to get ready for work but my eyes are gonna be pufffyyyyyy from crying

ITS_ME_EX

Im so exited for her to watch “future” hope she does

Travis Mattingly

I loved her ranting about how we aren't giving Pink Diamond enough credit for being emotionally complex and mature and not using her power to control people, and then 5 minutes later its the most heinous abuse of emotional power manipulation in the universe lol. However you end up feeling about Pink/Rose as she grew with the crystal gems, Pearl was *always* under her influence, even when it was love. Because that love turned to obsession, and it controlled her life even after Rose was gone for a long time.

Taylor Lapira

So the reason there's so much more clarity and strength in Steven's voice, especially singing, is that he's singing in his natural register now. Steven's voice actor has sounded like this since season 2 (you can hear him using his normal voice in the episode where he spends his birthday stretching himself out the whole time). He was just needing to maintain that younger pre-puberty voice. The decision to age Steven up for the movie and Future was partly so that Steven's VA didn't need to strain his voice, since he was actually 20 when they were making the movie

Taylor Lapira

For budget reasons I completely understand why they didn't have more of Spinel doing the ruberhose fighting with the scythe, but god damn I wish they did because Other Friends is such an incredibly animated sequence

Taylor Lapira

Pearl losing Pink/Rose when she became Steven was crucial to Pearl truly learning her own independence. Look at how she was when she first started teaching Connie to sword fight, how she still thought even then that her role was to protect Rose. Yes Rose helped her form her independence, but learning to act for herself and not someone else was a massive part of her growth, which I honestly don't think she truly embraced until A Single Pale Rose, where she technically defied Pink's final command and truly started living entirely for herself and not for Pink/Rose

Wyrx

Spinel is so great!

Taylor Lapira

The diamonds at the end are giving "TINK lesbian aunts showing up to rain down the Christmas apocalypse on their only nephew"

Kate Barry

Yea for Rose we see her character growth in reverse essentially. I've seen it done before and it's always interesting.

Jordan Barnes

The duet between Steven and Spinel scratches an itch I can’t explain. It’s just so pleasing to listen to, their voices are *so* different and work so well together. That melody is also haunting in a serene way.

Avery Corvus

It occurs to me that Spinel's ultimate plan was to reset Pink Diamond back to her original state so she could have her back, but it didn't work because Steven doesn't poof. Which just sort of adds a layer of tragedy to the whole thing.

Technical_Analysis

I think a lot of that is Steven's in panic mode. If the injector weren't there, and Spinel had just shown up with the scythe resetting everyone, he'd have been a lot more level headed about helping Spinel to help her. As it was, the world was coming to an end, Steven lost his closest friends and his powers, while less than 24 hours ago, they were all singing about their happily ever after. He's just trying to put everything back the way it was, I don't think he was only helping her to get her to shut off the injector, but our boy was exhausted, he misspeaks and it ends up looking that way. Spinel definitely deserved more than just being pawned off on the diamonds though, and I imagine if Steven had the opportunity to take a nap, and then talk with her, he'd have actually been a part of her healing journey. At the same time, Steven's been a part of so many other gems healing journeys, while he was just a kid himself, it's nice to see the Diamonds stepping up and Steven getting a break.

DaniDeFig

Considering that this movie might have more lyrics than dialogue, bringing up "a song" is a hilarious start to this video xD 31:43 I love seeing Bismuth be the one to encourage Steven here. The very character trait that got her bubbled (twice!), being a #1 Stan and true believer in the 'cause' of The Crystal Gems, is what's driving her to encourage Steven here! *Fantastic* writing. (also GODDAMN! she can BELT out those lyrics! :D) 54:31 - 55:14 Alicia being SPOT-ON accurate with the media and Psych analysis once again! ^^ Down to THE word: Independence. 'Independent Together' is another one of my all-time favourite songs of the whole series. 1:05:05 I think the only source of confusion between people arguing here, is how easy it is to forget that the gems are ALIENS. They're such great characters that they feel very "human". They ARE people. No doubt about it. But they are still wired differently. Literally. They have no Brain organ TO wire! On top of that, their culture is also: ...Alien. Gems are created, designed, built. etc. They pop into existence with a purpose, a task, and a role. More specifically: PEARL was designed FOR Pink Diamond. To serve her. Pearl is still her own individual, and a person, separate from WHAT she is. Absolutely. But to address what you mentioned Alicia: Yes! She WAS co-dependent with Rose and Loved her. But... I don't think PEARL herself could separate her love, her co-dependence, her "programming", and her 'role' as a servant. They all kinda blended into this horrible, painful mess that we got to watch her untangle throughout the series. Yes. I think you are right, in that Pearl was at the end of that journey when we see her in the show. But for me that just indicates how fucking BAD it must've been before Rose stopped existing. And *especially* while Rose was still using her Pink Diamond identity. We LOVE the Pearl we have now! ^^ The badass, independent, war veteran, stress-mom! But... she wasn't always like this. And I think the show has shown PLENTY of evidence that Pearl will ALWAYS struggle with her want (& need) to be her own person, clashing against the cultural norms she was BUILT to conform to. Especially while she was still interacting with the God-Queen she had fallen in love with, even when she wasn't supposed to (you could definitely argue that Pearls first act of rebellion was falling in love with Rose~ ^^) 1:06:28 OPAAAAAAL!!! xD T_T 1:11:05 "Let's play a game." Fucking *shatters* me. Fuuuck... 1:12:10 "Is this how it works? Am I doing it right?" Somehow worse. Fuck. (unpleasant childhood memories flooding back as a bonus, too -_- ) 1:12:36 Again: Spinel might not HAVE any other mode than "play mode". Now, she probably does :) But she wasn't designed for it. And she CERTAINLY was never told that it was okay for her to be in any other mode. She was designed and built as a toy... and was treated as one :( And no-one ever told Pink it wasn't okay to treat Spinel like. In fact, it was EXPECTED of her to do so :/ 'Drift Away' should be one of my favourite songs, but it just makes me too sad, man T_T 'True Kinda Love' is another fantastic song they packed in here. This one I *can* listen to on repeat ^^' 1:30:09 Steven climbing Luffy-style: Sheer GRIT up a sheer wall! Nothin' but fingers pain!! (but also sandals) 1:34:21 Same! We LOVE to se Final Form Steven use nothing but shields and defensive moves. Why is "he talked to the bad guys" always Super-Effective with Steven? Because if you can't get a hit in, you're kinda stuck LISTENING to him! ;) The Diamonds becoming Steven's clingy, judgemental aunts is silly and I love it ^^ Thank you Alicia, this was fun to watch :)

DaniDeFig

This. A reminder that we see Pearl PHYSICALLY stop herself from breaking Pink's final command, on multiple occasions (a reminder that I needed ^^'). I think as early as season 1?

DaniDeFig

Agreed. And it's a line that can TEAR at you on a rewatch!

DaniDeFig

This was an excellent way to put it. The power imbalance between Pearl and Rose was always FUCKED, and unfair to BOTH of them! It's almost impossible to have a balanced relationship when one of you can simply command the other against their will. I think Rose and Pearl got as close as possible, but never fully. It was still a FACT that came between them. A gap and a distance that could never *truly* be closed.

Marcello Reyes

And considering Gems are functionally immortal, 6000 years, for the diamonds at least, was probably nothing since they live for so long. Why bother checking on a garden that belonged to a dead relative who recently (according to gems) died.

Faroth

It follows the logic of "as long as the gem is loyal to her diamond, it cant physically disobey it', thats why the "dont talk about this" keep it going after rose "passed away", she was still loyal to her diamond because her diamond still exists, "her baby" steven as pearl has said before, and she said it at the start of the movie, she had trouble seeing that she finally fulfilled the last order of rose so she has no more to do for her and now she was free of that chain of command

Dawn's Echo

Now that you've seen the movie, you GOTTA watch Pearl's Secret Rap Career! Its on youtube and got so popular that the Steven Universe crew got involved in it! There are 8 videos total.

Joffre Cordan

"Have a conversation!" Don't forget that Pink didn't understand that gems could change from their purpose until after she had a colony, and rebelled.

bismuthalienated

Yeah Pink is basically the kid of the patriarchy. So much power and authority yet the diamonds never taught her how to treat people because they didn't care about other gems either. Every single other gem the diamonds made, at least that's what I get from the show.. From bubbling an entire type of gem to putting Lapis in a mirror. If you weren't useful you were thrown out. Unlike in real life though they can't die from age or almost anything, so left for dead is just left alone forever.

Alicia Lanza

Oh my god I had no idea, but I can instantly hear it! That's awesome.

Spicy Noodles

Something about her commentary of Pinkd abandoning of Spinal here rubs me the wrong way. I know shes using personal experience but it feels like shes unintentionally excusing pinks abusive behavior. Spinal isn't someone on the spectrum, she isn't a child remember she is a CREATION of the diamonds to fulfill a purpose. And thets to entertain pink. Instead of a conversation she abandoned here.b

Renn

I’m a month late, but I’ve gotta chime in here, hard disagree. She absolutely should’ve known. Sure the other diamonds treat her like a child and talk down to her, but she is still a diamond. She interacted with other gems all the time and they worship the ground, she and the other diamonds stand on. She absolutely would’ve known that they would follow every order, and spinel isn’t a stranger, she would know if she cared to think about it, but she didn’t. That’s even part of why she went down to earth in a disguise because if she didn’t, everyone would just treat her like a diamond. Hell That’s why she even told spinel to stay still, because she knew that that would get her off her back. And then she just didn’t think about it any further.

Salty Beard

Fun fact the VA for pearl is a church maga supporter

Nostalgic Madness

The Diamonds deadass went "We like this one, we don't fw this other earth shit, but this spinel girl is cool... so we takin her back, bye"

Byron Wright

By all accounts, Ruby's middle name could be D. because she was ready to die smiling.
