My roommate tells me there was an interview with the director where he mentioned that this wasn't the movies original ending. Originally Nikki was going to pull the trigger and it was going to end with everybody dead in that room but the actress begged the director to give her just one take to sell the Nikki lives ending and they liked it so much it's what they went with.

I really love how ridiculous the tragedy is when you break it down. If Bear had been honest and just admitted to Nikki he liked her when she gave him the chance, there's a non-zero chance she might have been open to dating. And even if not, he could have gotten some satisfying closure. Just so easily avoided.

That was an experience. It was like watching a train wreck in that it was a disaster that you can’t look away from. I was really impressed with the trope aversions/subversions in the film like the protagonist being a POS and the killer being sympathetic.

So the creative point of this album The Willow is not a monkey's paw. It just takes whatever you say literal because it is a wish it does not have morals or the ability to sense sarcasm. It will give you exactly what you wish for. Like how his friend wish 1 million dollars he got exactly a million dollars no string attached. Bear wanted Nikki to love him more than anything else in the world so he got a Nikki that loved him more than anything else in the world. More than herself, more than her friends, more than her own morality.

Nah, just terrible writing. Her morality isn't a person for a start. I love my partner more than myself and anyone else, I am not abusing and controlling them like she is in the film. It doesn''t mean I don't have friends. The wish didnt' remove any love for other people, and if it is literal as you clearly stated it cant' because he didn't say to. There's no justification for her behaviour. This is text book monkeys paw, it took massive and extensive malevolent liberties to turn her into something that wouldn’t remotely behave like that, just because they loved someone more than anyone else - which is a normal human existence to be in. People are trying to twist the film to match what it claimed whenever the director or whoever says something, the film is a spectacular failure as an allegory and the willow is without any question behaving as a moneys paw style objective whether by intent or bad writing. And it is now a catastrophic event and dangerous for men in abusive relationships who are already in extreme danger with society either refusing to accept they exist, or treat them as a joke. Now a film is telling society the behaviour or an abusive woman, and it is behaviour only shown by evil female abusers not women in controlling relationships, is a sign men are abusing. It is horrific, and set back society decades of small wins we had. They cant even get help with people recognising it, or coming out and telling people, because this train wreck of a claim from this film means they will see the woman who is inflicting the abuse as the victim and the man will be further isolated with that abuser.

early in the movie when he first buys the willow the cashier tells him “don’t come back complaining” how people who have opened it comes back and complains or they’re dead or wishes they were dead. Sounds pretty twisted to me.

Never have I had a horror movie stick with me so hard this quickly, easily a top 3 of all time for the genre. The writing, the cinematography, the lighting and everything that contributed to what made it so great is just stellar. Curry Barker has done a few other horror short films, which are also great, AND he is already confirmed to be behind the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre under A24! Inde Navarette is the absolute star of this film though! No wonder it made 300m+ across the global box office on a budget of not even 1 million!

The premise of this movie reminded me of "Wish Upon" where at one point she wishes that the person she likes was madly in love with her and the cursed item she wished upon made him obsessed with her, except in that movie the item wasn't tricking her or doing a monkey's paw, it turned out she was just so horrible at wording wishes that she forced it to make the guy she likes crazy for her. You ever want to watch a horrible horror movie, Wish Upon is a decently crap one. Edit upon finishing movie: Guess there's a chance it's Bear's fault too for his wording. Ian's wish didn't backfire, the shopkeeper's wish probably went fine based on his demeanor, so if Bear had wished a little smaller, maybe things wouldn't have gone so horribly. Let that be a lesson to everyone, you ever make a wish regarding love, don't quantify it over 50% love. Gotta leave room for other interests.

I don’t know if this is morbid but i think it would be a lot more horrifying if you hear her crying as she is crying at the ending you hear the gun click and the blood splatter on the tv screen as the music stops. Followed by the cut to the black with the black screen of the credits. PERSONALLY that’s my opinion if they wanna make it as weird and tense as they have it

Late to the party but I'm glad I watched this even after reading the synopsis. I love how eerie and well directed the acting is, and just how smart the lighting and composition works to obscure detail and create this inhuman, nightmare-like feeling, like everything is just wrong and "off" (also great use of eye shine). Not to mention the premise itself playing on the psychological horror of losing agency of your body and being caught in an abusive relationship over jumpscares or monsters.

I think it's mainly just the eyes but it kind of looks like if Kirk's facial features were put on Ludwig's normal human sized head. He's a very normal attractive young man, but I can see where he can evoke those comparisons in this film.

The wish became so malevolent because Bear's wish was malevolent in nature. Using a wish to alter a person's mind and make them love you is inherently violating them as an individual, thus it led to a horrible fucked up version of Nikki coming to life. The 'obsession' Nikki showcases here wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Bear's wish, you're equating two completely separate situations. The love you have for your partner and vice versa is consensual, what Bear does to Nikki every time she kisses him against her own wishes is assault.
