More than 99.0002% died trying to retake Maria. Less than 200 out of 250,000 survived. 250,000 was 20% of entire Human population. The population within the walls was around 1,260,000 individuals before the titans broke through, 1,250,000 immediately afterwards, and now it's just under 1,000,200 after that failed operation to reclaim Wall Maria (realistically maybe less because of the effects of the famine).

AOT is literally just a show of "Wait what's that mean?" "Why did that happen?" etc. You get hit with some many mysteries which, thankfully, do get resolved in time :)
