thats still a kiss from suki. the idea of her kissing him wasnt something friendly or to show she sees him as an equal, it had implication that she liked him as a boy.

I appreciate how you approached the thing about the traditions in this episode. So many people nowadays are so quick to destroy and decry all tradition because it is tradition, but a lot of it has a purpose. It's like with Chesterton's Fence, you should always assume that a structure or rule (or tradition) was created for a reason, and should avoid destroying these things without first attempting to understand what that reason was so you can determine whether it still applies. Of course, there are plenty of traditions that could do with being removed, like the one in this episode, but it is good to understand such things before they are destroyed.

God I love this episode. One of Katara's best moments, hands down. And this was a time before all the bullshit "empowerment pandering" we get these days. You can tell, because Katara won symbolically, not physically. And she earned it too. She's been a non-stop beacon of inspiration and hope from the jump(except when she stole shit that one time). If this had a modern writing team, Katara would have unlocked her own past lives to emasculate Master Paku with basically no more effort than it would take to queef, then waterbend his male-tears into a Venus-symbol shaped Betrothal necklace while scearming "I AM THE WOMAVATAR, HEAR ME ROAR", I swear to God. And Sokka would be simping WAY harder. It'd be like a Batwoman episode.

I love that Katara got absolutely clowned on during the fight with Paku clearly not even trying but in the end she still "won" with Paku realising sticking to tradition without consideration can cause more harm than good. It's so much more interesting than her randomly getting a power-up and somehow defeating the Tribe's greatest Waterbending Master. Although I'm probably a little biased because I just adore every time we get one of these old guy badass masters.

Paku vs Katara is really interesting to me because they do a great job of showing just how strong Katara is. It's unrealistic for her to beat Paku because he's got decades of training and she had to literally train herself (not to mention she's only been able to train for like ten years tops while he's an old master), but to see how far she's come with waterbending, especially for fighting, since the start of the show is awesome. Even he's forced to admit that she's an excellent waterbender despite her lack of formal training.
