MAPPA took over Vinland Saga and they are gonna do season 2, similar hoe they animated season 4+ from AOT instead of WIT

Love the reaction and I’ll try to explain a little about the side story of Vinland Saga as well as I can with my NA education. Leif Erickson is a real name is history. He is credited as the first Viking to reach current day North America besides the natives. I’ll add more as I remember it but that was the major thing I noticed you not mention in your reaction

The most important thing to be know about vikings, is that we practicly know nothing. Most we know of are oral history or text written by christians. So we can only guess. The people we would call vikings didnt write much about anything and that little they did write was on wood or stone. But what is clear, that they arent as onesided violent as most shows/games etc. depicted them. The word viking was given by the people that got raided and mean "pirates". So while yes they did pillage villages, that was only one occupation from maybe a few settelments and not the whole culture.

Thank you for the vid! I've actually never watched this show so this'll be a fun watch-along! Vikings did have chainmail, at this point in history it's been around for a long while (roughly a 1000 years) iirc the Romans used it as well, specifically it's believed that the Romans got it from the Celts when they were fighting them a bunch! The Vikings also wore an armor called lamellar which is a bunch of plates (made from metal or leather) that are tied together! Another fun fact! Vikings got hired by the Byzantine Empire (aka The Eastern Roman Empire) because they were very big and skilled warriors! They would convert to Orthodox Christianity and were called Varangians! They even got to guard the Emperor himself because of how loyal they were! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varangians A show I would suggest you check out (not necessarily as a reaction) if you get more interested in vikings is a show aptly named Vikings, it's not 100% historically accurate and takes liberties, but it's very entertaining and has fun culture shock moments that I just live for! Also some fun stuff to read if ya wanna see what we know so far about Vikings in North America! Some of the characters in the show were actual historical figures including Thorfinn, so don't read about them because that could spoil the anime for you. Also viking is actually a job not a "nationality" (this word isn't really apropriate for that time) or cultural group, but they were mostly of Nordic countries, like Denmark, Norway or Sweden, but there were even African and French vikings.

The part about the Vikings discovering America is accurate and no they wouldn't have killed the natives. Nordic Viking strategy was essentially arrive as traders to trade and scout a place, then decide wether to conquer, raid or just trade. For example they loved trading with the muslims in Northern Africa for weapons since these imported Ulfberth swords were of much better quality than contemporary European weapons, because they were made in kilns and coal dust was added during the forging process. This was basically the prototype for steel as steel is just forged high carbon iron.

AFAIK the Harald guy Leif is talking about isn’t around at the time of the story. He is pretty much telling him a story of how his people came to Iceland. I dunno much about Norse history, but that is most certainly a king from before their time. Also, as noted by another comment, some of these characters, like Thorfinn himself and Leif Erikson, are actual historical figures.Do not look them up, because there might be spoilers. While a lot of this story is fictionalized, the actual history could have some spoilers.
