Hype to see Alicia learn the Briggs way

Ebofa

It is always fun to see someone see Oliva for the first time and understand the full power and spectrum of the ARMSTRONG family. Olivias speech about how Miles is valuable because he has a different perspective have always reminded of one of my favorite scenes from the old Ghost in the Shell film. The main character Major Motoko Kusanagi is part of a anti-terrorist force that almost entirely consists of veterans who are heavily augmented with cybernetics. Early on in the film a recent addition to the team, a man called Togusa, questions why he is there. He was a detective before he joined and he is basically just a normal guy, with only have the bare essentials when it comes to cybernetics. So he feels out of place among the heavily chromed-up super soldiers and geniuses who make up the rest of the task force. The Majors reply to this have just stuck with me ever since. Found a transcription of their conversation, so I am adding it here: Togusa: Yes, Major. There’s something I’ve wanted to ask ever since I started. Why did you transfer a guy like me from the police force? Motoko: Because we need a guy like you. Togusa: Huh? Motoko: Number one, you’re an honest cop. Number two, you’ve never stepped out of line. Three, you’re a family man. And, except for the slight brain augmentation, your body is almost completely human. If we all reacted the same way, we’d be predictable. And there’s always more than one way to view a situation. What’s true for the group is also true for the individual. It’s simple. Overspecialize and you breed in weakness. It’s slow death.

The thing about FMAB it has so many cool characters.. like each time I show this show to anyone. I introduce them like. This is Armstrong - he is my favorite This is Roy Mustang - he is my favorite This is Hues - he is my favorite This is Scar - he is my favorite This is louis armstrong - she is my favorite This is ( their teachers name forgot ) she is my favorite This is hawkeye - she is my favorite I can still keep going you get the idea. so many likable awesome characters. Even the bad guys... like Bradley - yess he is evil and a dick but they have that vibe that demands respect and I love that in villiance... like he is terrifying cause he does not talk big. his presense alone does the talking and I fucking love that in bad guys....

QuibblesAndGitz

"She got DSL" *Insert Breaking Bad* "You're god damn right!"

Easy Mode - A.I

alicia - speaking of cinematography is just speaking facts its not racist! also alicia - tell the innocent child that those Asian people have some sick TEA BREWING alchemy! (yeah the racial themes are obvious and you're not wrong for bringing it up, just meme'ing. like I said before the lowkey racist jokes are half of why i'm here o wo~ )

Pockets

To quote everyone's favorite old man "it is important to draw wisdom from many different places" -our boy Iroh, from avatar. True wisdom isn't about knowing 'one right', it's about understanding many interpretations of right.

Volmest

And now you know why I said you will love this arc of the story in a youtube comment. Many crazy good scenes are still to come and I'm here for the journey. Love the binge 😀

AyatoMisubi

She is our general o7 Oliver Armstrong is truly one of the most respectable characters

Kaz

And thus we continue the tradition of Alicia predicting shows just before they end up as she says.

Dynahier

It would make sense that sloth is this crazy powerfull. In a way Sloth is unused potential. If a weak and stupid person doesn't do something, that may be because they are just unable to do so. A strong and smart person could do many things, but is just too lazy. I imagine the most frustrating part about Sloth the homunculus is actually convincing him to do anything

Darkendreign

When Alicia trying to outbrain Sloth, but he got no brain to outbrain

Pcdruid

That discussion on Racism in this video is awesome. You stated how I feel on this completely.

Serpentking789

As a very wise person once said, "the difference between ignorance and stupidity is that ignorance can be cured."

lionstooth

Wait... people dont get that the state alchemists are literally alternate universe nazis? I thought that was pretty clear with "Fuhrer" King bradley and the whole blonde hair blue eyed thing you pointed out. Plus theres some spoilers for the other series which was also very good.

Peter Gilmore

I get called an ignorant slut all the time. They not wrong.

vincent

God damn Alicia has one big wrinkly beautiful brain. Guessing the Ishvalan reveal 2 literal seconds before it happens, then going off on the most based true rant about how this anime is art imitating life and how your -supposed- to talk about and learn from it, not ignore it

tligger

People thought FMAB *wasn’t* about race?! One of the key parts of the story is a literal ethnic cleansing, and exploring the consequences of living in the country that carried it out.

Totenkreuz

The people who said that recognizing racial plot points is racist are mega racist themselves. Those are the kind of dumbasses that try to say that ignoring racism makes it just go away and try to claim that pointing out racism causes a divide. They are some of the worst scummiest pathetic racists. Trying to maintain the racist status quo by saying just don't talk about it.

MZ

Is this episode not loading for anyone else?

Kevin Søndergaard

well, be that as it may, I enjoy all your rants Alicia :D

Wil DeYoung

General Armstrong be like: "Get in loser, we're protecting the country."

Joe Vocaire

W rant🔥 I see comments like that about OP too and even though you’re not super far into it, it still deals with real world issues and people just don’t make the connection even though it’s like plain as day that’s what Oda is saying

stardmg

With Olivia as long as you're: 1. useful 2. competent 3. not Roy Mustang you're good in her book

Yehl

12:20 in the words of morgan freeman and coming from a guy whos half native with my mom being a full native america, you stop racism if you ask me by not feeding it. stop making such a big point about this or that race and stop trying to make this group feel bad about their race even though they at this point have NO connection to it aside from the color of their skin while that group be taught to feel like victims and the world is out to get them cause of their race... just teach people by example of what it means to not care and make sure the younger generations who can learn to love people without even thinking about their skin color this exact lesson and eventually as we are getting closer and closer to and i would say to some degree have reached, all that will be left are the general bullies. the portion of the population that no matter what reason they say it is, will ALWAYS try to find a reason to hate and want to hurt others. the true scumbags that cant live without hating someone for what they decided to make themselves feel is a super important reason cause at the base of plenty enough people is unjustified hate.

Yehl

beyond that i will say why i agree with freeman on his opinion is that adressing it and especially with any level of vitrol is a bad example to the kids and only aids in making the pendulum swing the wothe way. hell just look at the amount of hate going around for anyone even perceived as white now adays even tho eveyone born a few years before or after 1969 AT MOST only had parents around that were alive and likely close enough to adults for their live during the pre-civil rights movement to even matter. full stop plenty of it is unjustified especially when you consider how far it gets taken against EVERYONE without disgression purely based on race. if you just teach the history completly neutrally and let the kids see what it means to truly not care about race and give them a good example of an adult in their lives that shows how to best live if you ask me, than thats more than enough for them to not grow up like that and you dont need to beat people over the head with it.

Yehl

i also will say talking about it in shows is something im totally cool with as people not being able to seperate reality from fiction and look at the fictionally world on ITS terms need to re evalutate whether they are a damn adult or not

Yehl

18:50 and this is also my take when it comes to either HAVING to talk about race OR choosing to talk about ones life and peoples culture in a neutral or even positive way since the negativity only feeds further neggativity but if you feed the disscussion AT LEAST with the positive aspects of what differing race and culture means than i feel it still helps illuminate and fight back against the constant negativity of the past.

Marith Lizard

IIRC Arakawa and studio BONES had the warring and genocide in Bosnia and Serbia very much in mind when the manga and the first version of the anime were created. I wish FMAB felt dated now, but it only resonates more with world events every year :(

Winter Turnip

Alicia willing to fight a stupid bitch is amazing. Also calling it on so many plot twists is fabulous

MrBogThing

Bigotry may be a privilege that Olivia won't abide but she also won't acknowledge that not killing citizens in the war was also a privilege. Olivia's outlook may be better than most but it is still deeply disconnected from most of the reality of people's lives in her country, she basically has the same mindset as Father but on the other side and with no end goal. but I still love her and would still love even if she was not a mad hottie with DSLs

Nuclear Boarhead

I LOVED you calling out the youtube comments. I'll never get why so many anime fans wanna be like "no politics in anime!" but all the best ones are heavily political with a lot to say. Because it's art. FMAB is one of the most popular of all time for a reason.

Thomas Gabriel White

I have mixed feelings about shows bringing up racism. I think it's very important to know history, especially the history of racism, but I also think we need to move on and let it stay in the past. When people use racism in a story as a way to attack people, they naturally become defensive and all it does is keep the animosity alive. I've seen several times when a movie gets bad reviews they claim it is because of racism when all the criticism was about it being a badly written story. There are other movies, like Princess and the Frog, that get good ratings because it tells a really good story. However, I have no issue when a story brings up racism in a historical context like Fullmetal Alchemist, which takes place at the same time as WWII when racial discrimination and antisemitism were very common. Another show I liked was Liberty's Kids, a show about the Revolutionary War. Racism wasn't the primary focus of the story(the Civil war wouldn't happen until approximately 80 years later) but racism and slavery was an issue that was discussed a lot in the show. I would have been more concerned if they hadn't mentioned slavery. What I'm trying to say is, in the right context, it is fine, and sometimes necessary, to talk about racism.

Nathan Lehenbauer

Alicia, don't you know that tank fuel can't melt steel homunculi?

JackPrice

Man. I'm now realizing Briggs, General Armstrong, Miles and everyone else had a HUGE impact on me as a kid. I didn't give this anime enough credit for helping me develop. Awesome stuff

TSP247

I have been watching these while i wait for steven universe episodes, I have always loved sloth from this show.
