A watcher of mine on DeviantArt mentioned I should consider changing my first of the month patreon billing to subscription billing.  I've been told the difference between the two is this:

Subscription: sub on April 27, sub expires May 27

First of month: sub on April 27, sub expires May 1

Which billing structure do you prefer?  Should I change?  I don't think subscription billing would change people who prefer to pay on the first of the month unless you unsubscribe and resubscribe.

Thanks for the support!

Out of curiosity, what are the pros of the current first of the month billing (if any) over subscription billing? Is it mainly preference?

I mean from my perspective I know I can post on most Sundays, but if I do miss a day I know I can make up the lack of wordcount by the month's end. it's possible if someone joins during a busy week where I miss a day that they might not get 16,000 words of WG stories from my patreon, but so far every month I've been able to deliver at least 16,000 words per month. I think that's the only pro I can think of. I honestly didn't know subscription billing was an option until someone mentioned it to me on DA. It does sound like a better option for patreons more generally as long as I remain consistant with my sunday posts.

I honestly see no difference, i would keep it. People should pay every month if they want you content. Otherwise they can pay every 3 month and just see you old post.

True, but it also might be hard for people to find the time to read everything they want to read if they sign up toward the end of a month. It seems like switching wouldn't be a negative change, as most people would be unaffected anyway.

Some feedback from my perspective: I think you currently have a good model which would work well with the Subscription Billing based on join date. It provides people with "roughly" the 16,000 words per month depending on when they join. If somebody currently joins on the 25th, they only get maybe 1 new post (unless they go back to look at what you've posted so far this month). I will say, people generally prefer the subscription based since they always get 1 full month of being pledged to you, but it does have it's downsides as a creator (especially initially). For instance, there definitely is a bit of a hit financially when switching to subscription based. There are people who join on the 29th and 30th of the month and then get billed again on the 1st currently. Although that sucks a bit for the person, it is revenue for the creator. For me, I wish I hadn't switched ONLY because I have a once a month update, where depending on their join date, they may get 2 updates for the prices of 1. For instance, if somebody joins 5/10/23, I post my once a month update on 5/15/23, and then I post my next update on 6/8/23, they got both updates for the price of 1 and they likely won't rejoin until the July update. Switching to subscription based would be more favorable for your Patrons and your model allows it since you have regular updates rather than a once a month update, but it will definitely come with an initial adjustment to your revenue.

This is great feedback! Thank you! So I'm guessing I'd take the smallest financial hit if I made the switch on like the second day of a new month?
