I am so ready for this episode. I was wondering if you were going to wait a week due to the holiday, I am so happy you just released it early!!!

We did not see the explosion in the Martian parliament that news clip is how we learn abut it. I think the rock that exploded and fell to Venus, I think, is about the same size as the others. He just choose a sling shot path that went to close to the sun. We did have a peep of his plans all the way back in the very first episode. The belter that Avasarala was "interrogating", he was attempting to get stealth tech. This is one of, if not my favorite, episode to watch reactors watch. It is probably one of the best episodes of TV, imo. Loved watching with ya!!!

Tony Camas

Marco flung a bunch of rocks at Earth. I don't recall the exact number (if there even was one) mentioned in the books, but from the display at the end of last season, it looks like in the TV show the number of rocks was nine. I also believe they were all more or less the same size; I don't think "Rock #9" (the one the broke up near the sun and Venus) was significantly larger than the others. I think the plan was to launch a bunch of good-sized rocks at Earth so that they would do cumulative damage, rather than one or two huge rocks that would have had a better chance of being detected. Also, I think Marco knew that some or even most of the rocks might have missed, so sending more small ones would make it more likely that at least some would hit. And it turns out that was good strategy, because in the end only 3 of the rocks Marco launched hit. The damage done to Earth was significant, but a lot of it will be delayed, coming in the form of "nuclear winter" and other long-term environmental effects of the asteroid collisions. The prison where Clarissa is was captioned as "UN Penitentiary; Chesapeake Conservancy Zone," something I just noticed you can't (or at least I can't) see on my computer screen. Only on my 52" screen can I read it, and only barely at that. Something about the color grading, or their failure to incorporate a drop shadow in the title text, made it very hard to see. So if you're watching on a computer monitor (as I did when I watched your reaction), you can barely even see that there is text under "UN Penitentiary," much less read what it says. But yeah, Chesapeake Conservancy Zone, so I'm guessing the body of water in the establishing shot was supposed to be Chesapeake Bay. Which, as I believe you know, Greg, is not far from where the second rock hit (Northwest of Philly). So the area where Amos is would have been pretty badly affected, but he had the good fortune (or not) of being 10 stories below grade at the time, so that would have mostly protected him from the immediate effect of the strike. On the other hand, getting out is probably going to be tough, so ... definitely a mixed bag for Amos and Clarissa. The attack on the Martian parliament is only obliquely referenced in the TV show, but it is a significant subplot in the books. I think they made the right decision to remove most of that story line from the TV adaptation, but some disagree. This episode is probably the most shocking single episode of the entire series. This is The Expanse's "Red Wedding," basically. And you were not the only one pissed off by Marco. I think this episode pretty much cements him as the most despicable pretty boy in television history.

Been waiting for this reaction. One of the best episodes in all of sci-fi. With one of the “best” villains. Yes, the explosion on the Martian Parliament was off camera. As far as the first rock being a planet killer, not sure about that. Marco’s plan was to hit Earth with a bunch of rocks, not kill it with one big one. Where did Marco get his ships? Wait, things will become clearer. As far as where was Amos? This isn't really a spoilrt, but Chesapeake Bay, not a Great Lake.

The most insane episode.

Shawn Anomaly

And there you go "Gaugamela" the craziest episode of tv I've ever watched. Hell that one episode had more insanity than some full length action movies! I'll always remember my own jaw dropped reaction and seeing every Reactor reach this point in the show. Nobody ends up prepared for a tv show to do what occurred this episode let alone the insane pace of just how much took place in one episode! Now onto the journey through the fallout from all this madness!

So a few notes (mostly to answer questions!) The broken rock was same size as the others. From a practical standpoint, increasing the diameter of a rock from 1-2 megaton to planet killer would have mathematically been enormous in terms of stealth coating required, which they probably wouldn't have had. So it made tactical sense, too, as a larger rock would have been more likely spotted. Dawes is in theory still around. We haven't really had confirmation either way. I think season 4 showed us that the OPA is still pretty fractured, and different groups are working their own schemes. We're seeing the most relevant parts now. One aspect of the Expanse universe that the books mention frequently but the show never really does (just one of those details they sacrificed to keep all the other content in) is that space travel takes a long time. A really long time. Especially when ships are only doing a quarter- or half-g, if not just on the float. Clarissa was on the Roci until they delivered her to authorities at Earth. The trip out of Ring Space and then back from that far out likely took a few months, during which time she worked as a mechanic and bonded with Amos. That was why he wanted to see her before never coming back down the well to Earth again. For context, in the books, a 1-way trip to Ilus was close to a year and a half. Have a great holiday! Looking forward to the next edition!

What a fantastic episode. Gripping.

Goddammit, 1am here for me, on my way to bed because I have a long work day ahead but this damned episode dropped; christ another short good night sleep...

Ivo Costa

52:35 - Yes, they do look martian. They just lack the martian paint job. On another note: remember the belter Chrisjen had on the hooks on S1E1?

Except for the Dawes section, I like your info; this one is too much information for my part.

Joel Quinn

The Belt transcends to the new future by punishing the inners for their inability to leave the old order, violance, pain, and blood behind them through sheer mass murder. What a joke - pirates and spacers complaining about fair treatment by throwing rocks at civilians. Mars all the way!!!

Fair point and good catch. I tried to hint, but ended up doing more. I've edited my comment.

"Could anything more happen in this episode?" haha, just before the robot steps in! Monica was in Fred's quarters for her own protection after the attempt on her life so that definitely worked out for Holden, she actually saved him twice! So redeemed herself a little, no?

When this episode first aired, I had to stop after the first scene with Alex and Bobbie to cry over her mouse story because it was such a powerful metaphor for grief and how it gets used up no matter how awful the situation is. So many places this can apply today.

The rocks thrown at earth can be thought of in terms of TNT equivalent (similar to Nuclear bombs) and as such they come in all varieties. The small iron core rocks thrown at earth are more akin to city busters. The strategy is to pummel Earth into submission, not destroy it entirely as that would doom the system. Earth is paramount to human survival (at least in this timeline), no other planet has breathable atmosphere necessary for many things at a civilization scale. Edit: The type of ship Marco owns is hinted at previously, but will otherwise be clarified fully soon, however, the lighting and design may remind you the manufacturers.

I just saw a Reddit post that Amazon is possibly ditching The Expanse? The Expanse sub mod says UK and Europe so far. Just a heads up. Also I can't find your S5 E6 &7 reactions. What am I missing? Are they coming back? Thanks, Greg!

Very interesting on the Amazon/Expanse front. Thank you for the info! S5 E6 & E7 should be under the Expanse Menu in Collections. I see them on my end but please let me know if you can't see them, my friend! This site has been weird like that in the past :)
