This was a fun episode. At the start I was worried that Tendi seemed out of character with her competitiveness, but tying it to her time on Orion made sense to me. And of course it was great to hear Brent Spiner reprise his role as Data. Now for the references in a non spoiler manner. Mariner specifically mentions Voyager encountered a similar phenomena. This was in the sixth season episode "Blink of an Eye". When Mariner gets two months in prison for accidentally poking someone in the eye, she calls this "some Edo Level bullshit". The Edo were a species encountered in the first season of ST:TNG who did have an unusually harsh punishment for a minor crime. Mariner wonders why there is always someone lurking in these "Carbon Creek" situations. Carbon Creek was an episode in the second season of ST:ENT which involved some Vulcans having to blend in on a primitive planet for an extended period. And of course you mentioned The Inner Light which was the episode of ST:TNG where Picard lived out an entire lifetime in a short period.
