When the tide goes out, the River Thames reveals a vast foreshore. Though muddy and littered with debris, it draws mudlarks who search for forgotten artefacts.

Stretching nearly 95 miles (153 km), this tidal foreshore is roughly five times the length of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour promenade. Since prehistoric times, people living and trading along the river have left behind countless objects, which preserve the history of everyday life in Britain rarely found in textbooks.

On our visit, we joined licensed mudlark Alessio Checconi (@london_madlark) to dig through the “rubbish”  and uncover how Londoners lived in the past.
