"I'm gonna take some time to figure out a way to draw OOTB quicker and easier."Does this instead.

It wouldn't be the start of a new Out of the Blue chapter without checking in on whatever Sunny is up to. (Or a dream sequence.) Sunny's just having a nice little hike while Mack and Felix have their own existential crisis.

I was so pleased with my little sign I drew in the second panel. I dunno it just makes me happy. My favorite comments I get on the comic are from people living around the area it's vaguely based on going "ah yep definitely has those vibes." Now I'm just beating you over the head with it.

But anyway, I think I've just about given up on trying to make OOTB have some consistency style-wise. That's what you want to hear from a comic creator, huh? But no I mean, hey we're all friends here I can talk candidly. OOTB was always an experiment. It's my first comic. I mean look at the early pages to now. Talk about consistency. There won't be any consistency til I finally nail a particular style I like and marathon the reworking of the existing comic. Which I still want to do. I just haven't quite figured out how. I definitely don't want to stop the comic just to do that because what I have in mind will seamlessly blend into the current comic but... I dunno. I'll figure that out. It'll definitely be Patreon-exclusive until I'm ready to dump it but I'm putting the cart before the horse there.

SUNNY!!! I really like the smaller signs on the store too. They feel so real and true.

I know this is waaaay out ahead, but will you leave the original pages somewhere in an archive format? I know artists dislike looking at their old work sometimes, but the hunt for your style has given us some really neat experimental pages and it'd be a shame to lose them eventually.

Ari

Oh yeah definitely. That's a lot of my life put into those things no matter how I feel about them now.

Jeddek

That's good! Despite the whole series so far being about literally being uprooted forcibly, there's something so comfy about the art of it. Like going into a mountain cabin and looking at all the random furnishings. It may be a mix of things, but it all ends up being cozy in its own way.

Just got home and “omg, Ari post this early”? Anyway, I think it’s fine to not having a consistence style, many mangas started out looking not beautiful until the end after all. So don’t push yourself too hard about it! 🌹

This page is beautiful and you DEF nailed the vibe of the area. This may be a hot take but I LOVE seeing all the different styles that you do. Watching you or any artist going through experimentation and exploration in real time is always so cool and when it's in comic format, it's even easier to see. I love all your styles for different reasons but I do get what you mean about wanting to redo the earlier pages with a consistent style (And I'm happy you said above that you'll keep the older stuff up) Also, this doesn't have to do with OOTB, but do you have plans on making a comic with your deer boy?

Exhululath

I think when a comic lasts this long, it's only normal and natural that the author's style evolves in the meantime. I keep loving your art all the same. Seeing Sunny wandering alone in search of her big brother immediately makes me think of their poor parents. They must be worried to death. They surely were already worried enough for Felix without needing this stunt from Sunny. And I am curious: why did you choose that name for these caverns? I know it's mostly fictional / reality-adjacent, but I searched and there's a Buttermilk Falls State Park in NY.

I have not once had a consistent art style in the entirety of time I've done art so you won't hear such hypocrisy from me 🤣🤣 and personally, I've liked every style you've put out so just keeping doing you, boo 😁👍

Worth it, gorgeous details; love the signage designs. 😍

Buttermilk Caverns Diner: the Cave you Crave. Try our Stalagmite Stack of buttermilk pancakes! Open 23/7! I should probably talk about my thoughts on the page itself, shouldn't I? Making up a diner doesn't really get anything across. I don't think it does anyway. Well, maybe the fact that the word "buttermilk" is inextricably tied to pancakes for me. I love the warmth of the signs and buildings juxtaposed against the cold colors of the forest and nature. It kind of symbolizes that nature can be dangerous in this area. A warning not to stray too far from the path. On the other hand, the nature shown is beautiful. The waterfall splitting around mossy rocks as it falls. The large branches of the tree reaching out from behind the shop. It's kind of mesmerizing. Anyway I love it and you're doing great and I'm excited to see what's gonna happen here.

Ari

Yeah I've had one mostly written for a while but I can never tell how I feel about it. But writing comics down is easy. Drawing them though. Maybe someday.

Ari

I was searching for actual caves in the area for inspiration but they mostly had native names so I wasn't gonna do that. Then just thought about caves I've been in and how some of the mineral deposits and runoff can be kinda milky like and buttermilk sounds like something a southern person would come up with (proof: i, a southern person, did just that) after all the generic names like "lost cave" or whatever were already taken.

I always enjoy your art, but that first panel is especially beautiful. I just want to go be there. And as others have said, the look of the little general store is just so spot on, too. I grew up and lived most of my life, up through my mid-30s, in the rural Alleghenies (northern Appalachians), and I practically recognize this place.

Sunny: I need to hurry up and find my brother! Also Sunny: oh, look! Cool cave!

BetZenBac

Aww man I'm jealous of Sunny in that first panel. I'd sit on that log and watch that waterfall for so long

RPL

Man, those panels are beautiful! I totally agree, the sign is indeed great! I was born and raised in Brazil and the first panel reminds me of Iguazu Falls. At least a wilder, smaller and less touristic version of the current ones... I love Iguazu Falls. It's one of the places I find most beautiful on Earth and seeing your drawing made me really happy! Thanks!

baberuthless

That’s so funny, because there’s Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, NY. Ya know, very up north, so I was not thinking southern at all bahahah

Meranda Tuttle

That is a very beautiful sign and I've always enjoyed your artwork since I found OOTB. Here for the ride! Love the story, just want more of it. :P Waiting patiently though.

Bu Gizli

May never find a full-fitting style. And ya change, too, everyday, changing your favor. Is there a medium? Idk. Don't ever worry, though, the story only needs a flow to link the disparation. As you can see about everyone loves it--that's geniune love, not trying to cheer or anything. I love every single page of it. The style change might only be a flaw for y.

Exhululath

Thank you for your answer! I think that's excellent reasoning on your part ^w^ P.s. I do love visiting caverns!
