My mystery video is finally here and it's... exactly what many of you expected! As I say in this video, it's honestly kind of embarrassing for me how many of you guessed it. But this just goes to show that we are becoming a bonded hivemind. Cute! And it's good to know that some of you are fans of this show. I'm excited to hear your opinions on my opinions and so on.

I'm thinking of making a little post-video Patreon talkback of sorts in the next couple days with a Q&A to make up for the lack of BTS content during the production of this video. If you have any questions, either related to the video or not, feel free to ask them here! I'll answer just about anything as long as it's not weird or invasive. Getting this video done feels like a milestone, so I think it would be fun to have a chat about it.

I also added a patron scroll to the end of this video because I got some feedback asking for one. I hope it's to your liking! While making it I was just in awe of how many names there were. Thank you all so much for your support!!!

Let's talk about 9-1-1

I have been harboring a deep secret for over two years: I am absolutely ride-or-die for the silliest network TV procedural on the air. ABC's 9-1-1 is a magical combination of Ryan Murphy camp, broadcast TV-budget visual effects, and (possibly) unintentional homoeroticism the likes of which audiences haven't seen since... Supernatural? Maybe? Today I'll take you on an aggressively long-winded tour of all the show has to offer. The best and worst characters and storylines, the copaganda, the gay shipping, that Bobby Brown dance sequence from Step Up: All In, and so much more. This is a deep dive of Homeric proportions. Speaking of which, is that a 'first edition' copy of The Iliad?? jane you’re spoiling us . my family will feast like kings all winter

I hadn't guessed it yet, so I am unbelievably excited that it's 9-1-1. Side note, I don't blame you for not wanting to get into Lone Star. It's really not that good (there's an ice storm season that's abysmal to get through)

Finn

Heh, I knew it! I gave up watching 911 halfway through season 4 but this might be the sign to get back into it. Regarding buddie... I shipped it, but also realized it was a huge long shot. Like you, I was quite shocked to hear they had the spine to make one character of the ship bisexual and put him in an honest-to-god gay relationship, which is far, far more than Teen Wolf and Supernatural were willing to give us (even if it took 100 episodes). I'll admit I don't ship buddie as much as I used to, largely because I feel like they missed their window. If they do end up getting together, I'll have to ask "Why only now?" (because FOX wouldn't let them, but still). I'm not an anti, I think that converting the long-running platonic bond into a romantic one would probably work, but I think the narratively better option is letting them stay friends and letting Buck continue the romance he's currently in.

Finn

I did also watch the Lone Star spinoff, for the reason most people did: wanting to see actual gay firefighters and tired of waiting for buddie to be canon. Its... fine? Rob Lowe is the main character and gets most of the screentime, even though he is by far the weakest link. Also, one of the actors in the aforementioned gay ship has since revealed himself to be a hardcore zionist, so that may sour your enjoyment. Anyway I've heard rumors of a third spin-off in the works so it seems you won't have any shortage of 911 content to pick through on your podcast (which you should absolutely go for).

Jane Mulcahy

see I also would feel disheartened if it weren't for bi Buck! I still very much see full-on buddie as a long shot but now it's like.... technically 50% more plausible than it was before. I'm definitely clowning a little but I still have hope. I can't help it 😭

Jane Mulcahy

yeah when I watched the first couple episodes I honestly didn't find the gay couple very compelling because they immediately got together. I realize they brought up some conflict after that, but generally I just prefer a slow burn with a lot of tension and will they won't they in my tv romances. and I have heard that about the actor and it does put me off a little lol. I guess it doesn't matter too much anymore since the show is almost over 🤷‍♀️ my dream spinoff is a UK 9-1-1. 9-9-9!

🥳 just had time to watch the very start while getting ready to leave and i can't believe i was the very first to guess this! kinda embarrassing for me, but also 😎 🥇. i would like to thank all the nancy drew games i played as a kid for my (apparently) top tier detective skills lol. can't wait to sit down and watch tomorrow! 💖

Air Stratus

Thank you for your impeccable timing, Jane. This video was much-needed accompaniment as I assembled a book shelf and finally found out what the fuck was up with all those Bee ads I kept seeing around. I know now. Speaking of baffling and contextless ads, I was caught completely off-guard by the pre-show Tracker jumpscare because it’s been haunting me through my podcasts for a couple of weeks now. If you think the 9-1-1 promos are hilarious in the way they cut together robotic sounding soundbytes, I really hope you get a chance to hear the bewildering editing choices they made for that audio-only promo. If this is how they hope to recapture a younger demographic, I don’t think it’s going to work out. Then again, it was so awkwardly spliced and badly performed that I was tempted to watch it for myself, so maybe they’re onto something. I do have to admit that as soon as you started introducing and describing Eddie, I immediately snapped towards the screen to see if he fit the Infamous Ryan Murphy’s Dream Guy mold, and lo and behold… every time. Every time there is a built, 20-30 year old man with quaffed dark hair and very little interiority. The wheel turns anew. Also, your hivemind theory might yet bear fruit— I snapped at eddie that I would marry Shannon myself moments before you said much the same. Real sees real. Thanks again for helping me build my bookshelf, and congrats on finishing up this behemoth of a project!

Air Stratus

I scrubbed through a recent podcast episode and screenrecorded the Legendary Tracker Ad, including a wonderful line reading of “sounds sus”, but then realized I have no way of uploading a video to a patreon comment. This is so sad

Jane Mulcahy

heartbreaking... I have been seeing plenty of video ads for it on hulu and stuff but I haven't noticed much weird audio in them so maybe they're different from the podcast ads- but I did just watch a trailer that included the "that sounded sus" line lol

Finn

If this is the place to ask questions, mine would be: Do you play any sort of games, and if so, what is your preferred genre?

Lavender

Q&A questions: What are your favourite horror movies? and Why did you decide to go to film school in England?

andie bansil

I have never been more seated to watch a deep dive on a series I was never interested in!!! I totally get what you're saying when it comes to watching serialized network television. I'm always on my Murder She Wrote BS and I love how comfy and convoluted it is all at once.

andie bansil

Also 👏👏👏 at the shipping meets moral justification points. I've been so frustrated as a fandom biddie (lol) that representation and acceptance have improved but some behaviors and attitudes have gotten WORSE. It's endlessly frustrating.

Kaitlyn Min

I love watching long deep dives on shows that I will never watch. Have you watched New Amsterdam? It's a medical drama and has the same earnest wholesome goodness that you described about 9-1-1. I think you mentioned that you watched Hannibal in a previous vid so my Q&A question is: what if your Hannibal hot take?

Jane Mulcahy

I have not watched New Amsterdam! there are a lot of medical dramas that look potentially entertaining. I tried an episode of The Good Doctor recently because I thought it might be kind of silly entertaining but it didn't really grab me

Lee Cheeseman

ugh i love this so much! i've never watched 911 and don't plan to cuz i just really can't get behind the whole cop element of it but this was a wonderful little introduction to make all the 911 posting my beloved tumblr mutuals are doing make more sense. also your discussion of buddie reminded me a lot of nandor and guillermo from what we do in the shadows (one of my favorite shows of all time that i also hate with a burning passion.) both the characters are canonically queer and pairing them up would be a really wonderful direction to take the story but for some reason the writers have been almost intentionally dodging it for the past few seasons. it doesn't even feel like they're trying to do a slow burn, they're kind of just giving us...nothing. my theory is that the show is so bad now that keeping people on the hook about whether or not they're gonna be cannon is one of the only ways they can maintain consistent viewership (though now that the show is officially on its last season i really hope they just go for it.) honestly so many of the show's current problems with characterization and overall plot incoherence would be solved if they just put these two crazy guys together. if you haven't seen what we do in the shadows you should definitely check it out, it's a cable show so it has that same distinctly network tv vibe while also having a strong streaming presence. i know i just complained about how bad it is but as long as you avoid s4 and only watch the first half of s5 you'll be fine. also in my opinion, the things that make those sections of the show so bad are just as fascinating as what makes the good parts of the show so good. q&a question: you've mentioned quite a lot that you went to film school and really love movies and i was just curious what about the medium of film specifically speaks to you. i personally am kind of a film-anti, everyone in my personal life is constantly annoyed by my hot take that theatre is the superior medium for storytelling and that most good movies would work better as plays, so i just wanted to know what you love about them since you almost certainly disagree. feel free to take this as an excuse to just rant about how magical and unique the medium of cinema is cuz i think you'd have some really good takes about that.

simon

u should put ur videos on letterboxd so i can log them

simon

i've watched this video twice now and have letterboxd brain sry....

simon

now to read copious amounts of buddie fanfiction (i will not be watching 9/11)

Jane Mulcahy

haha I would if I had any idea how to add something to LB! someone added my Degrassi video at some point so supposedly it can be done

Air Stratus

I had a moment of “I wonder if Jane’s winning” and googled 9-1-1 s8 in order to check, then immediately got jumpscared with “Oliver Stark Says He Wants Slow Burn for Buck”. Truly, 2012’s shipping has never been more back

Jane Mulcahy

the slow burn comments, cast and crew saying episode 6 is going to be a big episode for Eddie and then the title of that episode being CONFESSIONS..... I've been trying not to be hopeful for the past few months but all of a sudden the floodgates are open. I am clowning like never before. healing my inner child

Lucy Curtis

I'm sort of deeply concerned that 8x06 Confessions is coming out 2 days after the US presidential election.... I think I've seen this film before (and it ended in superhell). anyway good luck to everyone I hope to survive next week

Jane Mulcahy

oh trust me I'm very torn between my shipper brain being convinced something big and good is going to happen and my rational brain being convinced that I'll be disappointed once again and it'll be something completely different than what fans are speculating

Lucy Curtis

In exactly the same boat honestly! Truly went into the season genuinely convinced nothing was going to happen and now I feel joyfully delusional. Trying to convince myself the excitement I’ve experienced this week can’t be taken away from me no matter what happens! The joy of shipping is often in its endlessly deferred potential etc etc…… Something beautiful about going from engaging with 2010s shipping culture as a brutally realistic teen and now as an adult finally allowing myself to clown. Healing Anyway apologies for yapping I have a lot of feelings! They may age terribly

Finn

Jane: I'll do anything to make buddie canon 🙏🙏🙏🥺🥺🥺 *first finger of monkey's paw curls ominously*

Jane Mulcahy

I literally had this thought tonight like what if someone sold their soul for buddie to be canon and the exchange was a second trump presidency 😭

Jane Mulcahy

Okay I'm back here to say that I've been watching the first few episodes of New Amsterdam because I needed a new dumb tv show and it's kind of ridiculous lol. I can't say I'm loving the style or writing as much as a Grey's Anatomy or something but it's definitely An Entry in the genre. I do love that it has Anupam Kher! I know him from Bollywood

Kaitlyn Min

It's extremely ridiculous and the later seasons are just even more so. It's basically like watching a soap opera except Woke™ in the best way possible.
