River Acheron

I really enjoyed this episode. It was a great mystery with some really good character dynamics, delusion or not. I will say, for Trek to touch upon subjects as serious as suicide, seemed extremely ballsy. Granted, I do not know how openly people used that word or confronted that topic back in the 90's, but I know that today, it's just not talked about or even discussed especially on social media to the point where you could get banned! I know I'm the "baby" of this community lol, but when I binged this, it shocked me for being so taboo and I love the risks it took. I will actually give this an S. I think it's almost perfect.

Jack Molitor

Bleh episode, but I’m increasingly hanging in on Season 7 just so I can follow Josh’s shirt game.

Brandon Blume

I really don't understand what everyone has against season 7. There are some question mark episodes and weird stuff, but nothing's truly BAD. I love season 7. It has some of my favourite episodes. I have more favourites in Season 7 than I do Season 6. Season 5 is ultimately my favourite season though. It has The Next Phase and Cause and Effect.

River Acheron

Season 7 is solid. I would say it has the most "fun" episodes that are enjoyable to watch, and yeah they get a little batshit which is okay! There are no E's this season and the only possible D for me is Interface.

Keith S

Boy, this episode had you guys chasing your tails. That's okay, I had a what the hell just happened moment when I first saw it too. Totally enjoyed the episode though. Nerd part of me loved seeing what the inside of a warp nacelles looks like.

Some Guy

Another youtuber, Steve Shives, has a series where he does skits about underappreciated starfleet jobs. In one, he plays a janitor complaining about how he has no idea how hes supposed to clean the psychic imprint of a murder-suicide out of a wall.

Darren

So much to like here, the mystery element is good it feels slightly off kilter in a good way but I can’t help but feel the ending undermines it a little - it’s a bit muddled (maybe that’s the point?) Also like the score

Mark Wood

It’s just an ok episode. Do agree with the writers they don’t do mysteries well. And speaking of the writers they liked the idea of a beauty and the beast romance but I also agree with them that they really don’t spark. Fells like a brother sister relationship not a romantic one. Marina was not a fan of this at all. laughably bad understanding on suicide something you might see on an afternoon special, not what you should see on a show geared for adults. And as a viewer the reality of how TNG was written ( and just from the writers words between seasons 6 and 7) you know many things were highly unlikely to happen. On the plus side directing and atmosphere is good and the score is above average.

Vina

I like this one, esp where it blurs the line about where the hallucination really started. For those playing along at home, around the 22:30 mark should be where she enters the hallucination, the part where she sees the psychic visions: it's the last scene that doesn't have Troi in it

Darren

Upon a rewatch - think I remember why I didn’t like the end when I first saw it - it’ was too ambiguous about Worf and Troi 😅

Prof Moff

Star trek TNG The sex scoreboard **call changed see below this post** I imagine all of you (who care anyway) are wondering what will be the call here. The answer is: YES!!! It counts. Just like a few other “in the mind” humpin-pumpin scores this one is a known for sure Worfing for Troi in episode. We see the start and then the morning after. Riker 14 Troi 7 new Picard 4 Dr. Bev 4 Data 2 Geordi 2 Broccoli 2 i Worf 2 new Chief/Keiko 1 Ro 1 Extra: Note, Troi is half the score as Riker. So Riker is the King slut, Troi the Queen. At least as of now. Reminder we did not count the baby making in Parallels because it didn’t happen during the ep. Here it did during the ep. If you disagree (Jovet of course) then make your case. A good argument may result in a change but this case I think is a tough one to change. It would mean going back and changing the other “not real” shaggin’. Let the debate begin: **CHANGE IN SCORE FROM ORIGINAL POST** @Nolan (see the reply below) made some great points that has led to changes above. Actually the Worfing was not done by Worf but by fantasy Worf. Now we will count for Troi because it is Troi but real Worf was not the one giving a Troi-oscopy. So from above Worf loses the score. Also. another great @Nolan point. Riker was pulling that LT. Going back it is clear that she was screaming NUMBER ONE!!! a few times that night so Riker gets a score added. I know if there is someone new it may seem like a stretch, but is in line with what we have been doing and many others including many TOS scores were at this level of ASSUMPTION. changes to above: Troi still 7 Riker now 15 Worf now 1

paultardspambot .

i really like this one. its season 7 in a good way

Ryan

Honestly better than I remembered. It's too soapy and mired in technobabble (psychobabble?), and who really cares about these events beyond the satisfaction of solving a cold case. But even though I knew where the ride was going, getting there was fun.

Tim Nikiforovs

So this one did improve on rewatch for me. There's some solid mystery elements, and the nacelle set is pretty cool. Also the Riker and Worf scene in 10 Forward is hilarious. I'll give it a B. Big step up from the D I was leaning toward. I did laugh at Troi's comment at the end. She was hitting Worf with the "how could you cheat on me in my dream" energy. If he knew what she was talking about he'd be like "first off, that was a hallucination, and second, WE'RE NOT IN A RELATIONSHIP..............unless you want to be?". Decent episode. Better than I remember.

Steven Linden

I love this episode. A great mystery, some great dialogue scenes, and great direction. I love the realization that what she saw was a reflection and I love the scene with Worf and Riker in Ten Forward.

Steven Linden

I slightly disagree that the science fiction plot takes away from the suicide of Kwan at the beginning. As we saw with Troi's hallucination, the reasons for her attempted suicide weren't just completely made up; they had roots in her real feelings and insecurities. Presumably the same was true for Kwan. The psychic thing didn't just take him over and force him to kill himself; it worked by ramping up his real feelings to an insane degree.

Philbot

So did you guys know that Klingons supposedly have 2 dicks? 🍆🍆 Because of the Brak lul the Klingon redundant organs.. Although they say in ethics that they only have 1 heart. Though multi chambered.. 🫀Also they only got one nose and 2 eyes 1 mouth? 🤷‍♂️ so why would the D be doubled?

Philbot

Did that happen or was it in Troi’s vision?

Philbot

Once you guys are through all the spoilers you need to watch Marinas con panel performances.. she’s hilarious! 😂 She has always called Micheal Dorny! Because her husband was also a Micheal..

Philbot

It’s basically the “ It was all a dream!” Which was kinda a cop out.

Philbot

I love Steven!

Steven Linden

That happened. But you're not alone in being unsure about that - apparently while they were filming, the cast was confused about what was real and what wasn't, and I believe Frakes said he played it broadly because he thought it was part of the hallucination. (Of course it couldn't have been - every scene in the hallucination has Troi in it.)

EnigmaticPenguin

Brannon Braga is the quintessential whacky sci fi idea guy more than a structured story guy. The differences in Ronald D Moore and his style is arguably what made them work so well together. I’ll have a lot more thoughts on him later in the franchise.

startrekiborg

"Was he straight up committing suicide? Well, that's what he did, but was that his intention? I really like that." Lol, taken out of context, that's funny!!

Gryff

Had the same thought as they said it haha

Gryff

Warp speed limit mention! And yeah, now youre catching the drift, only mentioned when we need to break the rules.

Collin Freeman

Definite "Eyes of Laura Mars" vibes in this one. I give it an A.

Collin Freeman

MIchael Dorn got the chance to make out with 2 women this episode. Nice.

EmptyDice

Michael Dorn will play a character named Dr. Michael Moghson in an upcoming movie. Apparently, he's not completely done with Worf.

ShazD

I'd love to know what the hell was going on with Deanna's lips in this episode. Also "It's not like Dan to take his own life" is up there with some of the worst lines in Trek lol.

ShazD

I'd say there are quite a few episodes that have fun concepts but execution tends to be lacking - Phantasms/Genesis/Interface/Eye of the Beholder etc. A lot of the episodes lack the kind of weight that episodes had in earlier seasons especially 3-5.

Brandon Blume

And they each got to make out with his teeth. 🧛‍♂️

Brandon Blume

Nah. It was important seed-planting for Troi to realize her true feelings for Worf. It wasn't like it was all wiped away and we have to start from zero, it just didn't advance as much as you would have liked.

reactive1

I’m not crazy about this episode. It’s ok I guess. Seeing the inside of the nacelle was very cool though. C+

Worf and Riker Ride Again

The question is, will any character in Star Trek be able to catch up with Riker? Did you keep a tally for Kirk?

Worf and Riker Ride Again

I like this episode even more on a full rewatch. Half of the episode being a dream is frustrating, but I think it works here as it explains the suicide and leaves us knowing that Troi is into Worf, which I really don’t get the hate - she’s a babe and he’s a chad, of course they’d be up for banging. It’s a good mystery and the directing is great, I keep noticing new background details each time. I’d give this an A.

Shanelle

Good point that the alternate realities are a workaround for introducing this new idea into a mostly episodic series. Especially in its final season. And if everyone wasn’t on board with the pairing. Frustrating, but it makes sense. Personally, I think there’s enough foundation between the two characters to make it a natural development.

jon bolton

Definitely my type of episode, S

Darren

Nah it’s not that. My issue is how this ties into Genesis 🤷🏻‍♂️

Prof Moff

To catch up, it would be a very tough job jumping into all those beds but doable (and I do mean DOable). Here is the the TOS sex scoreboard so you do not need to look it up: TOS Sex Scoreboard Kirk 12 Spock 5 Chekov 4 Bones 4 Scottie 2 Uhura 1 It is very true that Kirk had fewer eps/movies to score AND surprisingly Kirk faced censorship that allowed a whole lotta kissin' but not allotta horizontal photon torpedo launchin'. That being said Riker is the King of the romp-a-roomers.

Sam Langanke

Pierce spooked me out because he looked like Wladimir Putin in the f..ing 90s!

Sam Langanke

Me too. Although I don't understand his hate for Voyager and Lower Decks and his love for Discovery.

Ricky

Star Trek making Lost before Lost.

Sam Langanke

Masks is clearly a D. And we can argue about Sub Rosa.

Jovet

I forgot about the "It's not like Dan to take his own life" line. LOL!

TinMan_7B9

5:28: "Or it'll be some weird ghost story. Who knows?" You called it! I think of this episode as a mess because it is NOT a dream before the 20 minute mark. After I watched it for the first time on TV, I could not remember which part of the Troi/Worf romance actually happened. The convoluted technobabble explanation in the final two minutes also didn't help. 46:10: You have to remember, back in those days(TM) before DVD, you couldn't go back to a previous scene if you didn't understand something. If you have to wait years for a rerun in order to finally "get" it, that episode will not be fondly remembered.

Jovet

45:20 Yes. It was all in her head!! They did not pork. I LOVE the mindfuck of this episode!!

Jovet

He always looked creepy! (Before Putin)

Jovet

I don't believe it's frustrating, it's a fantastic twist!!

Thicketdweller

The real question there is organ orientation horizontal or vertical? Either seems complicated.

Jovet

I thought the 🍆🍆 thing is a spoiler ?

Jovet

Nope. Doesn't count. Didn't happen.

Jovet

Who is hating on you, Josh?

River Acheron

Sub Rosa is UNironically an S for me, but ya it's a devisive episode. I also liked Masks as a fun little romp and me studying mythology and folklore made me geek out for it. Oh its bad. But its so GOOD-bad! What I like about season 7 is its experimental and many times mindless fun :) Season 7 has several aspects that makes it one of my favorite seasons. It's NOT boring...it's actually entertaining. It has probably the most replay value (this is extremely important for me), and it takes genre-breaking risks. It tries to be something a little different with each episode. I can honestly say Interface was the only episode I didn't like. It sucks.

Thicketdweller

I’m probably wrong about this, but I believe this is the first suicide in Star Trek

Aramis Calcutt

What’s with Troi’s Joker lips makeup?

Thicketdweller

as we were in the period between season six and seven, it was announced that season seven was the final season so we knew the end was coming

Nolan

I flipping hate that. It's the most purile, juvenile interpretation of a serious plot point that exists for a cheap gag but belies an inability to think shit through beyond what creatives nowadays want to slap onscreen for an instantanious reaction.

ShazD

A convoluted techno babble explanation in the final few minutes? Must be a Braga episode!

Nolan

Counts for Troi, not for Worf. She experienced the hallucination, he did not. But Riker might have a possible one, depending on how his date went.

Nolan

"Fun" is not a marker of quality for me. I can have fun eating a McDonald's burger, but it's still low-grade food. Fun is what I have with an episode, but not a marker of the episode itself, but more an expression of how the viewer relates to it.

Brandon Blume

Don't get me wrong, it's objectively a lesser season than season 6. But it's in no way bad. Even if one or two episodes were trash that wouldn't make a season bad.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Maybe frustrating is the wrong word, I just meant Worf and Troi not really banging…

River Acheron

@Nolan, I talked about this before but that's where objective/subjective comes into play. We look for different things in entertainment. And sometimes we as individuals look for different things depending on mood. There's also the "so bad it's good" factor for me, but ultimately it's about objective and subjective qualities. Citizen Kane is widely said to be the best movie of all time, and Plan 9 From Outer Space, the worst. I do not agree with either by a LONG shot. Citizen Kane may be one of the most IMPORTANT films of all time for the groundwork it laid, yes. And granted the filmmaking and non-lineral storytelling was inspired. But I thought the story kinda sucked. I really don't care about the newspaper business. I don't dislike it because it's slow and serious, I just was not interested or grabbed by the STORY whatsoever. I loved the 1927 film, Metropolis, for example....I ADORE slow-burn if it holds my attention. But some of the "worst" horror movies of all time are also my favorite because they are not boring, they are fun, and at times unintentional comedy. Do you rate those an E or S? I have no idea nor do I care because they are beloved by me and many horror fans. I do like serious thought-provoking Trek as well! What DS9 will become is my favorite Trek of all time and better than TOS for me. But I love the rediculously fun and goofy stuff too as long as it doesn't bore me. Entertainment need not always be serious. When making a tier-list, Alex and Josh do so subjectively. I do agree that subjective enjoyment of something is a more important tier grade than objective quality.

Prof Moff

Interesting take @Nolan. I will go back and see if it has counted for the thought of person and the thinking person; or, if the person thinking of it only counts as in holo-dicking). Also, Riker. hummm. Given we look for scores and assume a lot I will go back and watch again and see if LT. Onenight Stand has that look, that look of: "I'm gonna feel that beard in some tender places". If so then I agree and change will be made.

James H

That would probably be Joe Tormolen in The Naked Time.

Scarpad’s Domain

I've never been a fan of this episode it was more Brannon Braga Weird wank. And it was Pretty Dull.

Sainjl

I’m with you guys. I love this episode. The ending doesn’t completely ruin it for me but I guess I haven’t rewatched it a lot. I’m team Worf and Deanna!

JoeMama47

Mark Rolston has the unfortunate blessing of playing creepy really well. He is infamous for his role in Shawshank Redemption.

tyranusfan

Followed by Clark Terrell in Wrath of Khan

tyranusfan

I used to record TNG episodes on VHS tape. You could rewind just fine, it just wasn't as fast or easy as DVDs. :)

Thicketdweller

Did he commit suicide or did he die from a sheer lack of Wil to live?

Thicketdweller

Was Terrell‘s military sacrifice suicide? It doesn’t seem like it was motivated by despair as much as honor. I don’t know how they spelled Captain Terrell‘s name in the wrath of Khan, when I say it this spelling is what Siri is giving me and I’m just gonna run with it cause anyone who can see it and already knows a difference they can be happy they know It sounds phonetically, correct just not right to me

Thicketdweller

But if they have a defined speed limit, why would they need to mention it at all unless there was a dispensation to break that speed limit a little like turning on the sirens on a police car? It seems logical they wouldn’t mention it unless they were having to engage in pursuit captain we would be exceeding the warp speed limit, or some other such nonsense

shanetown

On the subject of Klingon strength being possibly overstated... I once read a similar theory that alien booze such as blood wine and Romulan ale actually aren't very strong, but Humanity is running a long con so that we can drink them under the table if the necessity arises...

GreenCauldron08

I thought we weren't allowed to spoil the Worf/Riker romance

Greg Quinn

Another suicide was what's his name...guy from Mash who Luxwanna fell in love with then forgot about.

Greg Quinn

Also a suicide in Second Sight (dude didn't need to fly into the star, he did it to relive his wife of the burden of being married to him). Also the warp speed is destroying the fabric of space episode on TNG, the women killed herself to damage space to prove that it was possible to damage space.

Thicketdweller

David Ogden Styers was the guy in question. And I believe that we’re talking about a socially motivated euthanasia not a straight up suicide, which is typically caused by despair and hopelessness again this guy was possessed in this episode so in some ways he didn’t commit suicide but as was being explained at the end of the episode, his emotional states were being tampered with so much that he didn’t know the cause he only suffered from the effect so, what is it suicide well, technically yes, was it a form of possession technically yes People might call it a suicide mission, but generally, they didn’t kill themselves in the case of people charging a sniper’s nest or such things. A suicide mission is not automatically making an individual suicidal.

Thicketdweller

In my mind, death in that form of suicidal mission is honorable. In my opinion, suicide out of despair is not And therefore, my beliefs are that suicide itself is the act of someone who has lost the will to live so the character from the naked Time probably is the first suicide however, I didn’t read it that way at the time

Thicketdweller

In the movie red Dawn Leah Thompson had been shot and was going to die. Probably could’ve asked someone to euthanize her, but instead held onto a hand grenade until the Russians arrived and blew them up. That is an act of sacrifice in my opinion not suicide. it’s like splitting hairs, but one eye define honorable, and the other I do not however euthanasia is a tricky subject, and that typically can be performed as assisted suicide, but euthanasia could just be done by people who think they’re doing a mercy killing That gets extremely Gray. and harder to see black and white lines to help define it.

TinMan_7B9

So did I. The prices of those 2-episode VHS tapes you could buy back then were obscene! I recorded TNG on one of the reruns in the mid/late 90s. But by the early 00s I could barely make out the characters anymore between all the tracking lines, noise and color shifts. Horrible quality. Into the bin they went.

Philbot

It is now.. 🫡 but I think fans have speculated about it since Ethics.

Some Guy

Reminds me of an old British TV drama, "The Stone Tape"

Philbot

I don’t think they’re that strong really. We’ve seen Vulcans do some amazing feats of strength. Klingons are just bruisers.

Philbot

# Nolan, I used to be perturbed by it but in a very real sense what a fictional alien race is packing is none of my concern.

DustmanNorochj

Loved you guys rewinding the tape trying to figure out what you had just seen.

rear adm. crackbiscuit

It's never been a favorite episode of mine, but this was one of my favorite reactions!

Molly Campbell

When I first watched the show as a teen, I was a total Troi/Riker shipper and hated the Troi/Worf stuff, but I find now that I rewatch it, I'm enjoying it a lot more. I wish they'd had a couple more seasons to delve into it.

Paul

I like your shirt Josh, Rise above hate! Solid mystery episode, great vibe (fits well for an October watch).

Thicketdweller

Good observations, I still feel in those cases those forms of suicide are generally caused by an external circumstance and not the person‘s actual personality and despair which often are harder to determine in real life than the things they show us in TV shows

Thicketdweller

Although I have to admit the one incident cited from second site, where the guy is trying to bury the pain of the loss of his wife that sounds more like a true suicide

John A

I like this episode, I feel in this one, since we already know Worf has feeling for Troi, from a past episode, this one like a good magician it has us focus on them and we not notice any other clues that might be in this episode. Well done. Troi, also said it was a mix of her thoughts and Pierce, so in Troi mind we already sensed Worf's feeling for her, so that was on her mind already. Is my theory at least. Also imagine if the bones in the wall were real and all this time there have been hidden there, that would have been so crazy.

Jovet

Deoworf. ✅

Jovet

TNG's worst episodes are S7! "Sub Rosa" "Masks" "Genesis" (one the guys haven't seen yet)

Edweirdo

Soon after the season was over I was at a Star Trek Convention where Marina attended. She said that she said something to one of the writers about giving her something more to do and their response was to put her and Worf together to fuck with them. Of something like that, it was a long time ago and I'm old.

PIG

It finally hit me!!!! I don't know if someone mentioned below. The blond guy in this episode, the psychic catalyst, is from Shashanke Redemption, one of 'The Sisters'.: "I like it when they fight back." The actor is good at balancing slimy creepiness with regalness to the point of being uncanny. It was driving me crazy until now lol

PIG

It was an excellent gothic/horror sci-fi for Halloween. Agreed! That shirt? I might buy that shirt.

PIG

Damn it, Scarpad!

Ricky

Have you seen the show Lost?
