I generally like Walter Hill's films. He does love his gunplay scenes. I did think he did a decent job of mixing 80's and 50's styles (much like Tim Burton did with the 30's and 80's in his first Batman film). This one is a guilty pleasure for most people of my generation. I just thought it was too cheesy and predictable, right down to every line of dialog. Still worth a watch, especially for an early Willem Dafoe, but overall, at the end of the day, this is all just 80's mind-candy and doesn't get above a B- at best for me.

Diane Lane was a hotty (and probably still is). Loved her work in the 1980's. Not only beautiful, but I thought she gave some very good performances.

Some other Walter Hlll films you may want to check out: The Warriors; The Long Riders. If your enjoy Sam Peckinpah films, I think you'll like Hill's movies. If not, then you may want to take a pass, especially on The Long Riders and Extreme Prejudice. 48 Hours is another decent, fun movie.

Thank you for an enjoyable reaction. Certainly not my favorite movie, but like you mentioned, a good time for a movie that not many people have seen.

Rock of Ages is more like a typical movie musical with characters breaking into song (modern pop rock).

Is this a movie that will change your life? No. But this is a movie that has some ambition, some failure, some laughter and some genuine boredom but I didn’t regret spending my money to go. See it in 1984. It build itself as a rock ‘n’ roll fable. And fables while fables have interesting stories they definitely aren’t real just like this movie This was the first movie. I saw Bill Paxton in, and you could tell in that scene with him as the bartender this guy was going places. The next time I saw him was in weird science Michael Pare might have been billed as the star of the show, but Willem Dafoe definitely stole the show! Amy Madigan seemed to never really get above this performance in anything else I ever saw her do, and of course Diane Lane is awesome. And here is the first movie that Rick Moranis gets away from SCTv and the McKenzie Brothers, and shows he’s an actor, released just before Ghostbusters

What I love most about the movie suggestions on this channel is just how obscure they are. I have no idea what this is about lol

Thicketdweller

I really liked her in the movie the outsiders Diane Lane has always just brought a certain vibrance to every role she’s played

I just bought the long riders a couple weeks ago on a five dollar sale

I just finished watching the reaction to streets of fire. It’s about three in the morning no shocker there. Great reaction guys., worth the night owl watch kind of like a midnight movie The last time I saw this film was in 2018 when I bought it on a five dollar sale and the time I saw it before that was in 1985 As I mentioned in another post, I went to the movie in 1984 and I did not regret paying money to see it. However, I did not find it to be earth shattering just fun. The blonde girl who likes Ellen so much that they found on the street after rescuing her is also in the movie better off dead with John Cusack and interestingly enough she has a singing role in that as well This is a movie I would’ve taken as a pic out of many that I’ve thought about it just wasn’t actually one I would submit, especially now that somebody else has. In half the fun of being on this channel has mentioned by another is your pension for picking obscure films The cop that boarded the bus who said they were too anxious to pay them off also appeared in the movie Prince of darkness as a physics professor For the cop guy that was a real bit part, but he was a stand out somehow he sold it

I am generally interested in what your opinion of this movie is now that you finished it Something to enjoy is the way I see it. Nothing to write home about. It’s not like they’ve found a solution for the last digit of pi.

All of that moody guitar playing that was in the soundtrack in the transitions and in between the songs was pretty much done by Ry Cooder really had a good sound. He also did the soundtrack for a movie called crossroads with. Ralph Macchio.

Collin Freeman

Yes, that was a good film, as well as a good performance from Diane Lane.

Harry Broos

Jesus, I haven't seen this since the late 80s. All I remember is it being dark and griddy, good music and fighting a very pale Willem Defoe with sledgehammers lol

Thicketdweller

One more observation, One of the reasons this movie works is because of real stuntmen, real stunts, real visual special effects The kind that you don’t see in movies today The kind that made mad Max fury Road so incredible. It was people doing dangerous things on camera for real.

kevin coleman

Good movie, not great. Really drags at points and doesn't quite deliver on the craziness that the box delivers. One of those where besides a few scenes and Willem Dafoe's character, nothing sticks with me.

kevin coleman

Don't forget his incredible work on Paris, Texas!

Thicketdweller

Thanks, Kevin, I have not heard of the movie, Paris, Texas, but with that kind of soundtrack quality in the background, I’m willing to bet the movies better than my lack of knowledge presents

Philbot

I know 3 of the Sorels bird is the only actor I don’t know.

Philbot

Dialogue is terrible the direction is good idk about the acting I’ve probably seen all these actors perform better. Micheal Pare has lead actor looks, but not lead actor chops. This movie could almost seamlessly be a dystopian future. Just add a bit more high tech stuff like the train or whatever. Is that the back to the future diner? Hill valley backlot?

Philbot

That is Dottie from pee wee

The song in the movie "I Can Dream About You" reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Soundtrack peaked at No 32 that year You have to see "48 hours", (1982) since you mentioned it Deborah Van Valkenburgh (Reva Coby) is also in Walter Hills 'The Warriorrs" (1979) Hard Times (1975) is my favorite Walter Hill movie. Also "Crossroads" (1986) more of a Blues tale Michael Pare - (Tom Cody) "The Philadelphia Experiment" (1984) I like a lot. He was also in another Rock N Roll tale, "Eddie and the Cruisers" (1983)

Mark Chrisco

The role of McCoy was written for a man, but Amy Madigan so impressed, the character was changed with very little dialog adjustment.
