Sir, This is A Quark's.

4 seconds in and I need Josh's shirt... yesterday! 🖖 [Edit] Ok... what if we do Encounter at FairPoint... but MORE terrible.

Jonathon Tsagris

I don’t blame you for forgetting Bloodlines after the glory of The Wire. I think one of your invariable post TNG ranking videos should be a ranking of all the ‘holodeck’ episodes. This one falls a bit flat IMO. A C for me.

Jeff

Will you guys be watching the final two episodes together as a two-hour finale, as it was shown on tv originally?

Worf and Riker Ride Again

The ending should have been Picard talking about the new lifeform being a sum of all the good deeds the crew had done, but as Picard is talking we hear faint screams of terror and see a short clip of it harvesting an alien species

Mark Wood

Season 7 isn't hated. It's just a drop off in quality overall compared to the previous seasons of TNG. The Old SOS ranking by fans watching it when it aired has season 7 nearly identical in quality to season 3 overall. But down from seasons 4, 5, and 6. But still significantly better then seasons 2 and 1 And yeah this one is either a low D or a high E.

Vina

About half way through the episode in the conference room, that was a strange series of shots, all just face shots, no group shots. I think Alex commented on it briefly too. Strange choice

Call ‘Em Greg

Imagine how much better this episode would’ve been with Cyrus Redblock, Minuette, Moriarty, Freud, Einstein, etc.

THE LORE!!!

I missed this episode when it aired. I read about the plot because it was all you could really do back then and I thought it sounded absolutely sick. Then, when I finally got around to seeing it after the original DVD collections came out, I was so utterly disappointed, perhaps more than any other episode I had missed on air. It's so unbelievably flat. And the whole time, I didn't care. I would go as far to say that I couldn't care... cause I actually tried. The random holodeck characters have no life to them; they feel generic AF. I wish they had at least used more from the worlds they created. Imagine if Dixon's Hill's secretary, for example, was the representation for this new lifeform? Idk, it just lacked a connection, which I feel like we needed this late in the show.

Darren

Ah wonder what Joe Menosky was smoking this week. He seems to come up with wild concepts for episodes that never quite work 😬

Darren

Despite the weirdness of this one. I’ll still take it over Force of Nature which remains worst of the season at this point.

Target Audience

The callback idea is literally right there. They already did the Wesley and Alexander eps, and considering the next episode (which we have watched) this one not having references now just sticks out poorly

Ross Townsend

Watching you two reference all the great episode with such fondness at the start makes up for this train-wreck of a plotline (and with such a promising start, too!)

Narnman

good news is with my newly upgraded membership i get to see star trek a day earlier bad news is its this episode!

Narnman

shoot Freud again!

Marko

Directed by Gates McFadden awesome shirt! Had more excitement for seeing that than this episode

Bantha Fodder

One of the worst tng ever. You could see the disdain in every actors face.

Sam Langanke

There are reasons why season 7 has not the greatest reputation. This is one of them.

Prof Moff

Since the new life form was created from the fantasies of the crew, the Sex Scoreboard staff wants to make it clear that the: handcuffs, bottle of baby oil, gimp mask, and 12' dildo did not come from us.

Sam Langanke

And a ranking of your worst episodes, please!

paultardspambot .

really? I thought this was a fun, intentionally goofy episode

paultardspambot .

I don't see that at all. Looks like something they'd have fun with

paultardspambot .

meh, after watching this all in order, I'd day season 5 is overrated and worse then season 7. Yes it has some really good ones but it has a long stretch of dull "decaf" trek.

paultardspambot .

I forget this is a season 7 episode as for whatever reason they show this alot on reruns (unlike Picard's fake son which is never shown) Maybe this is hurt by how strong DS9 has been?

Steven Linden

Fun fact: This was Cliff Bole's 25th TNG episode, making him the most prolific TNG director. In second place is Les Landau with 21.

Thicketdweller

This episode says that the enterprise creates its own “offspring“ and creates its own version of “tin man“ or gumtu

Doctor Pulaski

If TOS is your childhood, and TNG was your teens, then the remainder of DS9 is your party in your 20s, next day early morning walk of shame show. I'm so jealous of you guys...

The_Truth

The good D?? You got something you wanna say Alex??

Derek Locke

Oh man... I didn't remember this being this boring! I think back in the day, they idea of the ship becoming sentient was just cool enough to like the episode for that alone. Seeing it now though, it just doesn't hold up for me.

Actuarial Lurker

Almost every Voyager episode is a D or an E.

Doctor Pulaski

lol, and ENT is when you get laid off during a recession. Nu Trek is your midlife crisis when you buy a sports car and try to date people far too young for you.

JoeCensored

I always liked this one. Pretty creative.

harrypothead42024

I always assumed that food and drinks in the holodeck are made by replicators. Why would the not be?

Gryff

I love that you hit yourselves with the repeat clip of the probe after the "This scene again?" joke from the 'Bloodlines' watch. XD

David Wayne Fox

Picard's last comment about the experiences and logs of the crew being absorbed into the whole lifeform matrix thing... if only we had seen some indication of that instead of a bunch of random cliched characters we've never met before. I think they were going for a Jungian dream symbology thing but none of it works.

Tim Nikiforovs

As I have said, I have a soft spot for this one. Objectively, it's not a good episode. It's a low C if I'm feeling generous. But I still love the idea of a new intelligence emerging from their experiences aboard the ship. I guess this sort of qualifies as another "newfound family" ep of S7, given the Enterprise had a baby. Now, obviously there was a ton of room for improvement. Having a bunch of callbacks to prior holodeck eps would definitely have helped, and lightening up on the technobabble while leaning into the philosophical implications would have made the idea more interesting. Could have been an opportunity for Data to bring up Lal again. Also if they had brought back previous holodeck characters, rather than have this abstract "Vertiform City" thing, have the entity speaking through these characters trying to learn who and what it is. Asking questions, trying to understand why it exists. It could have been such a great concept to explore, following off Quality of life, but they couldn't stick the landing.

tyranusfan

Don’t count on it. Remember 2 and 6…

DthDisguise

We are two for two on you guys(and the fandom at large) detesting my favorite episodes. This and Masks are the two episodes I have the earliest memories of TNG from. Granted, I saw them when I was maybe seven and I loved(and love) them more for my own imagination of what these technologies can do interacting with each other, but that's what made me love Star Trek.

River Acheron

I disagree with them about 6, but I STILL say that 2 is very overrated. It honestly did nothing for me. I didn't hate 2 but I would give it a C

Scarpad’s Domain

Yeah this was a piss poor story really only 2 more decent episodes, fortunately they stuck the landing

Scarpad’s Domain

Yeah it’s my least favorite series, they could have done so much with the premise and they just kinda went back to business as usual so you’ll as k what was the point. It’s the only trek where I don’t remember the eps as I’ve never went back to them

Scarpad’s Domain

You could tell by this point it was a tired series one of the few times I could say 7 seasons was enough

Josef Nitervol

Your idea would have been so much better!

Josef Nitervol

The only computer episode I like is the Ultimate Computer. "Fools and colleagues who wouldn't begin to under my concepts! laughing at me! laughing at the boy wonder!! something like that lol "Jim! give him a minute he is in a state of shock!!! Destroy it, Kirk!!!! look what it did to your mighty starships!!! LOL omg such a great episode! I can quote TOS more than anything. Its only because I never had a VCR as a kid, so I use to Audio tape the Episodes at night. The only episode I heard on Audio before watching it was Metamorphosis. Let me tell it was far better to listen to it than watch it. I remember being disappointed by it. After time went by that changed of course.

Joe Concepts

You never know. Voyager is definitely not all bad. But most of their best stuff comes in later seasons. But for me it's got the most, "Interesting concept, not well executed" episodes of any of the shows. It wastes some really great potential by always circling back to warmed-over TNG plots.

Joe Concepts

It really seems like they crammed in some last minute leftover ideas because the show was about to end. "It's weird, but it's our last chance to make the episode!" Instead of building to a finale in the back half of the season. While I like some of the movies, and later appearances of characters, I also think there would have been some value in Season 7 being the end. It had a good finale, and we wouldn't have had the "Save it, because we're making movies" attitude I think they were forced into. Part of the problem of an ongoing franchise.

EnigmaticPenguin

This is the kind of episode that would have been in early season 3 when we were all telling you the show was about to actually get good.

TC Green

“D of all Ds.” Yeah, totally agree. Boring and pointless.

Forbidden Donut

As I understand the holodeck, I think if someone is given food or something to drink, it's not a hologram, it's being replicated. That's why they can actually eat/drink it, and why it would stay in their hands if they were holding it when the simulation ended.

Paul

3 to go boys, I second Raphael's sentiment. It's been a wonderful journey through TNG with both of you guys, reliving a cherished series has been even more compelling than my first watch of it. To many more series to come!

Duncan McDonald

Oh dear. Rare I say this, but that was dull as dishwater.

Forbidden Donut

Hmm... would I rather rewatch this, or Masks? I think it might actually be Masks. Both are boring and slow, but I find this one even more bland and generic, whereas at least with Masks you get the set changes and all the Brent Spiner stuff.

Avaria

I can't remember if it was actually an interview about TNG specifically, or the late 80s/early 90s, or even just early narrative TV in general, but apparently the attitude of the studio at the time was that because it was episodic and syndicated (no guarantee of episodes replaying in the same order), there wasn't any point to spending time or money beyond the standard per episode budget for an actual finale. The production staff had to advocate on behalf of the audience's emotional investment and need for closure in order to get it approved. Remember, both TOS & TAS had neither a proper introduction nor a finale. The whole run on TV was in media res, with no notion of ever picking it up again.

JRandolph

Prediction: The next episode will make up for this one and be a favorite for Josh and Alex.

Adin

As someone who really likes Voyager i hope not. I also never really understood the hate for it 🤷‍♂️

Stephen Wright

Producers - “We’re finishing up the script for the finale. We have this turd lying around! That’ll buy us time!”

Chris Mickelson

I agree 100%. That's just what I was thinking. It seems obvious to me that it would have to be the case and that its one of those things that doesn't need to be explained or established in canon. Common sense that consumables are replicated in the holodeck. That's why snowballs and water can exit as we've seen before. It's not that 'they didn't care'. The Boys have great insights 95% of the time, but the other 5% is "I didn't understand it, so they suck" mentality.

Steve777

I think it’s weird that in this series life seems to be so easy to create. It seems to be happening all the time. It seems to, at least to me, devalue life. Also, during this time it was still a popular idea to unfortunately let plane hijackers do what ever they wanted to do. Also, it’s because of the episodes like this, that people don’t like the majority of season seven. Though it does have some bright spots. I hate to tell Alex this, but we only have two episodes left, not three. The last episode is a two-parter.

ShazD

Hot garbage. Also loved that comment about how Picard should direct modern tv.

Ryan

If your experience is like mine (and YMMV, for sure), I think you'll end up liking DS9 as much as TNG, just in a different way. TNG is my happy place, still. The Enterprise-D is bright and welcoming, and everyone knows what to do, and everyone talks everything out, and I can go there for an hour and just be away from the world in a place where problems get solved. DS9 is more of a shared-trauma kind of thing. Those characters go through some serious shit over seven seasons, and I came to care fiercely for them as a result. The fact that they're all flawed and struggling in some way helped a lot with that. I go to DS9 when I need a reminder in my life to try again. Not that any of that applies to this garbage episode, but just so it's out there.

Chris M

Yeah its not great but a nice concept at least. Discovery kind of runs with this at one point, and makes an even worse job of it.

reactive1

Look at the bright side, this is the last bad episode of TNG!

reactive1

👎👎👎 FFS, everyone is so down on Voyager. Let’s just totally give Josh and Alex this horrible impression of it before we even get there. Voyager is like any Trek series, it had its ups and its downs.

Greg Quinn

Yeah because other wise if you ate holo food and left the deck it would all dissolve and probably feel really weird and uncomfortable in your stomach if not dangerous.

Greg Quinn

I do like the idea of clear call backs (some of Worfs monsters that he fights, set to 11 as "train security" might have been cool). Lawrence Tierney who played Cyrus Redblock would have been cool but by this point he had his role in Reserve Dogs and had something of a career revival with that. Not sure if he would have been willing to come back for a minor guest spot. Also that kinda takes away the fact that he dissolved at the end of The Big Goodbye (did he die when he dissolved)?

Collin Freeman

Reminiscent of the Star Trek Animated Series episode "Practical Joker". Probably better left to that series than this one.

Philbot

My theory as to why their champagne glasses didn’t disappear.. the computer need's to make split second decisions as to what is a prop that is needed and “replicated” and can be carried out such as Moriarty’s drawing of the enterprise. & what is just “Set dressing” such as the book Picard tossed out in “Ship in a bottle” so of course drinking champagne on the Holodeck they would need real glasses and real liquid. Moriarty’s drawing is the biggest stretch… but the computer must have been like “ok this is important he’s taking it with him.”

Philbot

When? I’m not remembering no ‼️ spoilers ‼️ lol

Chris M

Cant really tell you without spoilers..

Philbot

No no you’re on to something all those dumb fuck holographic characters have shared trauma and are coming together to build a better future for their “offspring” 😂

Philbot

I was once watching Sabrina and the only way I knew she was onscreen was her platinum blonde hair lol

Philbot

How easy would it be for say.. Riker to impregnate a purple alien lady. 💁‍♂️ Or to replicate an iguana? It’s easy to make like a roast 🍖 how hard would it be to make a lower lifeform? 🦠

ShazD

Yeah when people think of season 7 not being so great they're thinking of bilge like Emergence, Interface, Phantasms, Masks, Bloodlines.... Yikes Joe Menosky really was not in the zone season 7.

Philbot

It’s funny they should mention a Gates heel turn, coming up on the penultimate episode.. 🤔

Scarpad’s Domain

this episode might be a template reactin of voyager where 90% of the show is this

NoMoreWiire

Yup - the Borg, Q, the crystalline entity, the big, blue barrel that doofed Worf, the holodeck safeties always failing, Barclay's anxiety, that horny candle-ghost... it's all been the work of one person - Ensign Gates... McFadden! *pulls off mask scooby-doo style* *dramatic music, fade to black* To be continued next time on Staaaaaar Trek - the next generation!

Mike Rogers

I don't remember a damn thing about this episode.

Todd

not 3 more episodes...only 2...

Deep Red

Josh's idea about bringing back callbacks to all the previous holodeck episodes is actually brilliant. It's so good, I'm actually mad that it didn't happen

Some Guy

No bloody A...

Rangsk

Turns out the train conductor is future Eric who came back in time because he wanted to make sure the crew had tickets

Shanelle

It really is a wonderful idea! And the line is even in the episode about the ship using the crew’s holodeck programs. What a dropped ball.

Shanelle

I love Alex’s love for Ensign Gates

Shanelle

Enjoyed the reflection at the end about how time passes, both on this Star Trek journey and in life in general. If TOS represents childhood and TNG/DS9 our teen yrs, does nuTrek represent adulthood? lol

JackieNCB

This was my favorite episode when I was a kid. I love an interesting, almost supernatural mystery on the enterprise. Seeing it again I do agree its not as great as I remembered and it felt much longer of an episode as a kid. I still love it but its mostly because its taking me back to my childhood.

John M.

TOS is adolescence, everything seems bright and new and hopeful; TNG and DS9 are your prime, confident and growing intellectually; Voyager and Enterprise are stagnation, happy where you are but not really trying much new; NuTrek is aging, trying to relive the glory days with diminishing returns, growing more meta and ironic, but, every once in a while, having a moment that reminds you of everything you love. (Can only hope the post-Kurtzman era is replete with the wisdom of age.) :)

Jovet

I HATE this episode SO MUCH.

Jovet

11:15 Stupid plot element #1: something would have torn the ship to pieces that isn't normally detected by the sensors. If it was dangerous to the ship, the sensors would originally be designed to recognize and report on the danger. Completely asinine writing.

Jovet

30:00 ROTFL!!

Jovet

Ensign Gates has nothing on Lolita Fatjo. 🌸

Jovet

The finale is, technically, a two-parter.

Jovet

That explains... everything. Time. Space. Future. The world...

Jovet

Worse than Masks. Stupid and boring and not just pointless, but world wrecking.

Jovet

A 2-part story is two episodes.

Jovet

This is an "E–" As in, "Erase from canon and discontinue program"

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

COWARD!! Worf just stood there and watched while a ton of bricks fell on Troi! Grow a spine Worf! (I think he has barrel PTSD)

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

This isn't far off - You have limited time to work on all the scripts getting produced and season to season you can start to spot the episodes that needed more time (but never got it) and the episodes that got time to cook and were fire as a result. Just have to trust that the production staff do the best budgeting all their resources.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

> Be Johnathon Frakes > Misty background > Fact or Fiction "It never happened"

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

The only way to like Voyager is to have been 9 years old when it aired (or later as a hate watch when you're in on all the jokes)

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Voyager promises a comfy life but takes your dog in the proceedings and you later find out she gave it away because she never liked it anyways

Loot Narsbaar

Move Along Home is Citizen Kane by comparison

Jovet

I could see it, too.

Jovet

The "sci-fi" trope of "reaction shots" to something unknown/unexpected/dangerous/peculiar. (Looking at you, SG-1!!!)

Jovet

Quite the milestone!

Jovet

"Encounter at Farpoint" was not terrible.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

not sure I agree. At least in Force of Nature they were in space doing stuff, this episode is just Worf, Data and Troi, bored and stuck on a train

Sir, This is A Quark's.

I know... but Sirtis can't rewatch it and by now (this is not a spoiler) the whole "Ferangi eating people." thing would have probably dissapeared.

Miranda

Wow. I'd rate season 3 as WAY better than 7.

Aaron Wells

At about 28:30, where Data is (comic relief? lol?) holding the taxi by the bumper with one hand while the engine spins the tires at full throttle...the very next cut you can clearly see both of Data's hands on screen, while he's working with the gizmo in the street. You can still hear the engine and the tires screeching. I remember noticing that error when I was a 4rth grader and being completely annoyed. Weird how it's still just as irritating decades later.

reactive1

“Riveting”… 😂

Back Flip Bet

Costumes from the warehouse? filming on the studio train cart set? Using the studio back lot? Someone's saving money for the next two episodes CGI budget 😂😅

Back Flip Bet

It finds it legs eventually and has tons of great episodes. But yeah season 1 has 5 of these

Back Flip Bet

Just like season 1 snow balls in it someone outside

Back Flip Bet

It's been said the writers and producers had total control early on, and as the show went on the actors started directing and had more input. That's why everyone on the crew starts to really love acting. Acting on the Holo deck, plays in Ten Forward etc. Typical actors 😭😅😂

Back Flip Bet

It's budget more likely. "Hey we have 3 million in cgi next two episodes" pick a story we can film on the studio back lot, use the studio train car set, and no new aliens just get a bunch of random costumes from the warehouse

Back Flip Bet

When they film on the backlot it's a sure sign they are saving up money for a cgi heavy episode coming up.

Philbot

Especially in that instance you’d want real matter so you can feel the cold and the snow? They didn’t quite have it figured out season 1 it was a lot more replicated matter. Encounter at farpoint Riker says it looks so real and Data says most of it is real.

Evan Guthrie

Finally got around to watching this one, now all I have left is... bloodlines... ugh
