B for barely great with a Troi story

Numinous2019

B for season 7. C for seasons 3 to 6. Definitely one of the more sure-footed S7 stories.

Brett O

In this one B plot is an A and A plot is a B, so overall B I guess.

TinMan_7B9

In this one the A plot is an A+ and the B plot is a B-, so overall A I guess. Because in my opinion the A plot is a lot stronger than the B plot. I think the reaction of a medieval society to modern technology & science is more interesting than another officer getting a promotion.

Jim J

Terrible episode! The Data plot is unbelievably boring and the Troi plot is too trite and stupid to be taken seriously. That is no way to promote an officer and the writers insult every command officer in the Star Trek universe with this nonsense (not to mention the fans).

Rick McCombs

I mostly agree with you, one thing I've always taken her saying to Data, "You can call me sir.", as a joke

HeatheЯ

You know this one is such an odd personal preference. Objectively, I think this ep is a B or C, but it's an S for me. I really love this one and always look forward to it.

Mikaby

I want to give this an S, but I do think it's weighed down a bit by the B-plot. I don't much care for the idea of the counsellor and the doctor commanding the ship, but it's hardly the least plausible thing done in the name of drama, and at least the test has an interesting twist I approve of. It's a weakness, however, that it doesn't have anything to do with anything else that's going on, and given how isolated it is from anything else, it feels a bit... artificial? Staged? Contrived? So it's probably C-tier, which pulls down the S-rating I'd give to the A-plot. I think Data logicking and sciencing his way through the difficulties he's encountering in a pre-industrial society is fun and charming, and the girl is pretty adorable (huge points for a child actor I not only don't hate, but actually rather like). So combine the S-rated A-plot and the C-rated B-plot and I pretty much have to give this episode an A. This is one of my very favorite Data stories.

Mikaby

I think you're overly harsh on the B-plot. Though I do essentially agree with your points, I still think it falls into C-territory, at least, with the interesting solution to the test giving it some merit. And I really like the A-plot, finding it significantly more compelling than the A-plot in "Ensigns of Command" (though "Ensigns of Command" did have a B-plot that actually tied into the A-plot). So, "Thine Own Self" as a whole is an A for me, even with the comparatively weak B-plot.

Mikaby

I went S for the A-plot and C for the B-plot, so I too ended up with an A overall.

Spencer Loften

Most B tier episode in all of TNG. It's fine.

Mikaby

Well, I do understand your complaints, and my position is probably a lot closer to yours than to thinking the B-plot was actually the good one, but I can't summon up your level of hatred. I have issues with the B-plot, but it doesn't outright pain me to watch it.

Ian Westcott

I have an affection for this (gave it a B) despite its huge flaws - bad guest acting. A good plot that devolves into super-obviousness. But I'm fond of Data's interactions with medieval scientist lady and the family he lives with, and the Troi plot is good.
