How are we treating 2 parters?

Aramis Calcutt

In my view, Season 7 is disappointing because there are several episodes that betray some of the essential values that make me love Star Trek. And that’s even if taken in isolation they might be entertaining adventures. To me, Star Trek needs to be more than entertaining. It needs to uphold a certain set of values. And to me the worst episode in this sense—maybe in the entire series—is. “Tapestry.” This episode makes a mockery of the idea of egalitarian respect for every sentient individual. It’s a worshipping of the “great man” theory. When Picard spoke the line that he would rather be dead than live the life of a competent mid-level science officer, I wanted to slap him across the face for this supreme insult to the dignity of the “humanity” of every individual and his or her contribution to the enormous TAPESTRY of life. He rejected the basic dignity of all people and instead subscribed to what should be considered the backward idea that value is achieved through striving to reach the highest levels of a hierarchy and to be the person exercising as much power as possible over the people around him. The Picard in this episode was not moral or ethical or admirable. He was despicable. I FUCKING HATE THIS EPISODE for what it makes Picard into.

Not my personal list, but this may be of interest. Back in the Stone Age days of the Internet, a guy named Joe Reiss used to run a poll for every episode on Usenet. Every episode would get multiple hundreds of votes. He’s still got a bare-bones site up that archives the scores. https://www.joereiss.net/sos/cgi/season.cgi?TNG/* So, this is basically how the Internet rated the top 26 episodes in the '80s and ‘90s weekly as they were airing. Not sure how the scores compare to something like IMDB today, but I imagine they're pretty comparable. 1) The Best of Both Worlds (I) (9.7) 2) Yesterday's Enterprise (9.6) 3) All Good Things (9.6) 4) The Best of Both Worlds (II) (9.5) 5) Inner Light (9.4) 6) Q Who (9.1) 7) The Measure of a Man (9.1) 8) Cause and Effect (9.0) 9) Tapestry (9.0) 10) Chain of Command (II) (9.0) 11) The Offspring (8.9) 12) Deja Q (8.9) 13) Parallels (8.9) 14) The Defector (8.8) 15) Face of the Enemy (8.8) 16) Reunion (8.7) 17) Redemption (I) (8.7) 18) Darmok (8.7) 19) Sins of the Father (8.7) 20) The Pegasus (8.7) 21) Lower Decks (8.7) 22) Sarek (8.7) 23) Relics (8.6) 24) The Wounded (8.6) 25) I Borg (8.6) 26) Family (8.6) Even back in those early days of the Internet, guys like Ron Moore and Robert Hewitt Wolfe would drop into those newsgroups and answer fan questions from time to time.

This is NOT my TNG best episodes Top-26, but it IS my TNG favorite episodes Top-26, the ones I've probably watched the most. "Chain of Command", BOBW, "The First Duty" and "Ethics" for example are incredible, but they're not on the list because I didn't really enjoy rewatching them very often. TNG (Guilty) Pleasures Top-26: ------------------------------- 1. Yesterday’s Enterprise 2. First Contact 3. Future Imperfect 4. Tapestry 5. The Offspring 6. Cause and Effect 7. Clues 8. I don't believe that's what Picard is intending to express AT ALL. Picard never seeks to dominate people. Time and again we see him in good faith seek the advice of his senior staff, defer to Riker for command decisions like raising shields arming weapons, whether to travel as slow as warp 3 etc. Instead it's Picard rejecting the ordinary life his brother and other Picards lived. He wanted to be unique and blaze a path. He is the first of his family to leave earth, he is the first freshman to ever win the academy marathon, he was promoted from lieutenant, straight to captain-- skipped the commander ranks entirely. He's been a starship captain for over 30 years. Being a startship captain is such an integral part of his identity that he did not resign after being tortured by the Borg or the Cardassians (specifically because he was a the captain of the flagship). For him being that other man is having his entire identity erased, his life's work destroyed, and having to live with becoming the opposite of that after he had achieved all his goals in life. Living a quiet safe life of doing science experiments is not what he wants to do. That's why he worked so hard at being a captain. It's not that he looks down on these people or thinks they are scum, he knows he wouldn't be happy in that life. Is he reacting emotionally in the moment? Is he angry at Q for being duped? Yes. But not more than Lt. Riker was with Commander Riker. The situation is analogous to him suggesting Riker help Worf die, it's too big of a leap. Quality of Life over quantity of years lived.

Loot Narsbaar

Season 3 is so good I forgot about Riker on trial for r--- and murder. That episode would have been top 5 of season 7.

Loot Narsbaar

Scenario: When you are 70 years old you are murdered. God comes down from heaven and says I'll extend your life for 30 years, but I'm going to erase the life you loved living and replace it with one I know you'll find unsatisfying and will leave you unhappy. Just for the lols. Do you take deal?

Aramis Calcutt

AND THEN … the whole thing turns on his reversing the decision not to help his stupid friend with his stupid argument with the Nausicaans. REFUSING TO HELP WAS THE RIGHT, MORAL, ETHICAL, LOGICAL, RATIONAL thing to do. That friend did not deserve his loyalty or support in that caper.

Cirk Bejnar

This is the list I would have DMed Josh and Alex so it's weighted to episodes that I love that aren't necessarily their favorites, but it's mostly my honest opinion of how much I enjoy/look forward to each episode: 1.) Darmok 2.) Tin Man 3.) Best of Both Worlds 4.) Redemption 5.) Cause and Effect 6.) The Wounded 7.) Q Who 8.) Chain of Command 9.) Data's Day 10.) Clues 11.) Tapestry 12.) The Chase 13.) Future Imperfect 14.) Disaster 15.) Parallels 16.) Reunion 17.) Sarek 18.) Ship in a Bottle 19.) Booby Trap 20.) Ménage à Troi 21.) Yesterday's Enterprise 22.) Sins of the Father 23.) The Most Toys 24.) The Survivors 25.) The Inner Light 26.) The Arsenal of Freedom

Loot Narsbaar

The whole point is Young Picard has to die so you can get Prime Picard. Picard wasn't born perfect. Human beings learn from failure. If Picard had never failed he would have never learned to be virtuous.

I went through the seasons real quick and threw every episode that I liked (aka re-watched most often). I ended up with 42. Breaking that down to 26 and putting most of them in order was harder and more painful than I thought it would be. It sounds stupid, but I felt guilty when leaving an episode off the list.

I felt the same leaving out at least 6 i'd have liked to have done included, that's even after cheating by only counting 3 2 parters as 1 each lol.
