Man of Mini Tall Ants

Andrew Robinson, chef’s kiss. You give the man the opportunity to show off and he does not disappoint. One of my favorite top tier episodes.

Rocky hate Mark

I don’t think the endorphins had changed Garak’s personality. His body had become accustomed to the increased levels so he couldn’t actually feel them anymore only when they were cut off. The Obsidian Order is the Gestapo of the Cardassian Empire. As with any other totalitarian regime for every agent they have watching for external threats they probably have ten watching their own people.

Surgically Sedated Spy Suddenly Stopped Smiling, Shaking Severely. Starfleet Soulmate Subsequently Started Snooping, Saving Secretive Seamster. Station Sweater Shortage Solved!

Numinous2019

I agree. Besides there was an adjustment to Robinson's performance in 'Past Prologue', so that episode can't be used to assess Garek's real personality. Additionally, Garek's charm, humour and gregariouness can be dialled up and down by him as needed. This was to be a Kira story. So we can disregard the implant for any prior appearance of Garek.

Others are giving this an S, but let me explain why I didn't not think it's an S: this is a really good, solid episode, that gives us a great look at both Bashir and Cardasian society(through Garak). However, it isn't doing anything that pushes star trek to the next level, and that's what S-tier is to me. Definitely A-Tier, but it isn't raising the bar.

Erik L Jerks

You have a good point, but I think the other way is if the episode is a personal favorite. This is the episode that truly defines Garak, and because of the way DS9 world builds, the impact of the episode is greater than the sum of its parts. I feel like there are going to be a lot of episodes like this due to the semi-serialized format.

Emodramabomb

DS9 is in a good place where they can have long multipart stories, threat of the week, but they also can do episodes like this where it is 100% just exploring characters. No, it's not space opera or setting new max speed limits like other (non)S-tier episodes, but omg these actors are incredible when they are given the focus.

Mikaby

I agree that this is an A rather than an S. It's a cool idea, and I love Garak, but I don't feel like the plot is the masterpiece of drama I'd want an S episode to be. There isn't anything that's happening in the present, aside from Andrew Robinson's performance, that knocks me off my feet. It's great setting and character building, but other than that, it's just a good, solid episode, and not something that has me on the edge of my seat.

Evan Guthrie

Let me guess, you gave it an A?

Evan Guthrie

Yeah he doesn't seem all that much different once he adjusts. Would have been cool to show a stark contrast in the episode though.

Rocky hate Mark

Except they set his base line personality over the past two seasons. To completely change him once he’s off the implant means we’d have a different character going forward. Garak is brilliantly written and acted so changing him going forward would have been a crime.

Loot Narsbaar

Disagree. This is the first episode of Trek I can recall which could be done as a stage play and it’s riveting. Definitely new ground for the franchise.

NzingaAuset

I respect your opinion and agree that there are a lot of more impactful eps coming up later, but I gave it an S because it is maybe the first ep where they elevate a recurring character to the importance of a supporting or even starring character. Plus it's done with so much skill from every department from the acting to the writing and the direction.

Cranky Grandma

A. I can understand people voting S though.

Deep Red

When I watch this I feel like it's an S. But then I remember how much better so many of the episodes that come after and I'm like, "Ehhh, maybe a high A".
