Jonathon Tsagris

I'm not sure I can agree with a worst 10 list that doesn't include Code of Honour or Shades of Grey (in a sense not including it because it's barely an episode is in itself a cop out).

steve harris

don't miss words bones tell me what we really think about the actor Matt Frewer 😆 the actor was also in Eureka

startrekiborg

It's not a 20 minute holiday special! That is a cop out. Ofcourse it's an episode. Probably the same reason you say it's barely an episode, is the exact reason it's a bad episode. The producers call them episodes. It's like saying "Inner Light" isn't on the good list because it's really a work of art.

Summer

I have two types of worst episodes, those that were boring or unneeded and those I hate to watch, for the boring/unneeded I would say Masks, Man of the people, Interface, A matter of time, Sub Rosa, Vengeance factor, Too short a season, The last outpost, Schizoid mam and Silicon avatar, for offensive or I just hate it, Up the long ladder, Aquiel, Suddenly human, Violations, Angel one, The host, Emergence, Journey’s end, Force of nature, and Justice Legacy is also in this list

Aaron Wells

The worst episode is some sort of Venn diagram where one corner is a wheel that spins on almost all of season one, another corner is Up the Long Ladder, and the third corner is Sub Rosa. For me it's definitely up the long ladder. Second only to Move Along Home for the worst episode in the entire franchise.

Raphael Gaytan

Poor Matt Frewer. You guys aren’t wrong! Just…poor Matt Frewer! 😆👍

John M.

Had to narrow mine down from 18. The worst ten, chronologically: Code of Honor, Too Short A Season, The Outrageous Okona, The Child, The Price, The Loss, Cost of Living, Imaginary Friend, Aquiel, Force of Nature. Basically I dislike Season 1 and Troi episodes that start with "The". Masks, Genesis and Sub Rosa don't make the list because they're still fun to watch. And Shades of Grey gets a pass because I didn't hate it back when it was new (partially because I was young, partially because I had no access to the clips).

D Jammers

Another thing about Masks that I hate, is how empty the ship feels. It's like the enterprise is turning into a pyramid but only our main cast is there to notice.

BN13

I guess my bottom 10 would be: Man of the People Qpid Force of Nature Aquiel Angel One Sub Rosa The Outrageous Okona The High Ground The Game Emergence More or less in order with #1 at the top, and #10 at the bottom. These are all episodes that I find physically painful to watch. The Outrageous Okona for me would be your guy's A Matter of Time. I agree with you that the A Matter of Time guy is by far the worst guest star in the entire series, and that episode gets an honorable mention from me. But in general, that episode always felt mid-tier for me, not worst of the show. Though after watching you guys, I think I agree with you more and more on that one. That guest star character just makes the episode insufferable. I've never liked him and always felt like he was the worst part of that episode. I guess I just liked the idea of it. But at least in A Matter of Time, our whole crew KNOWS something is off about this guy. In Outrageous Okona, what bothers me the most is how the rest of the crew acts. They all exhault this guy like he's the best thing ever. Everyone is so out of character, the B plot with Data trying to understand humor makes no sense, everyone's dialogue is horrible, Guinan almost feels like she gaslighting Data just because her writing is so bad here, and the whole thing just feels like a really badly written Mary Sue fanfic. I do like the plot at the end with Okona revealing what was going on between the two ships, and for a long while, I liked this episode because of that. But after multiple rewatches, this one is always going to be a hard skip for me now. Things like When The Bough Breaks are actually mid-tier for me. Yes, it has problems, but that episode actually spoke to me as a kid, and it made me want to live on a planet like that where everyone already knew what they were supposed to do, and all had families that supported them. Also Deep Throat from X-Files is in it. Masks I agree is bad now, but I have a soft spot for it because it used to be one of my favorites as a kid. My other honorable mentions would be episodes like Lonely Amoung Us, or Time Squared. Not because they're bad, because they're not bad at all really. But because either nothing really happens in them, nothing comes of them, or in the case of Time Squared, what was even going on in that one? So they usually get skipped. And I guess the Naked Now can go in there because really, that episode should have either never been made, or done much better in Season 5 or something when we would actually care and it wouldn't be as campy. Maybe in place of The Game. I also don't care for Time's Arrow, but mainly because, like you, I agree that it wastes/ruins the whole Picard/Guinan backstory. Unlike you, I actually didn't mind Mark Twain, and my favorite thing about this episode is the conversation he has with Troi about how things in the future change for the better. It reminds me of scenes in The Neutral Zone and has that optimistic feeling that I like about season 1. Most of the episode isn't that interesting though, and I don't care about these energy stealing aliens.

Paul

Overall, nice lists. But In Time's Arrow... "Nothing happens?" They find Data's severed head on Earth, from the past, in a deep underground cavern, discover an alien race that's siphoning off human, for lack of a better word, souls, discover that Guinan has been on Earth centuries ago, and Data gets trapped in that past and even hustles Dukat in poker. To say nothing happens is quite a disconnect from my perspective. It's the only point you both make that I disagree with or can't grasp. Anything else, like A Matter of Time being Josh's #1 pick, which wouldn't even be in my top 10 list, I can still fully appreciate given how much you disliked Matt Frewer's performance. Okay I get that. I do wonder how much Jerry Hardin's Mark Twain over-the-top performance brings down the episode for you both. If he was recast, or rather Jerry Hardin was instructed to tone it down a lot, would it still be in your top 10 worst episodes then?

Evan Guthrie

I will tolerate no Masks slander

Target Audience

Even without that reasoning…. Shades of Gray was fine. I watched it and went “oh ok, a clip show.” Nothing about it made me angry or bored.

Target Audience

I actually think it being the season finale harms it more than mark twain

Laura Thornley

My mum has on multiple occasions told me she actually likes Move Along Home because of how silly it is.

Laura Thornley

There's not many episodes of TNG I refuse to rewatch. The Child is one of them.

startrekiborg

Well, that's your opinion, but you said it was a cop out for those who said it would've been their number one pick because it's not really an episode. And then gave no reason behind that statement. Not only is it an episode, it was the season finale. After sitting through that lazy piece of garbage writing, I had to wait three months for my next fix. I was pissed. Love it or hate it, it's still episode 22 of season 2.

Raphael Gaytan

My Top 10 Worst of TNG: 1) Home Soil (There is no excusing this shitty rip-off of Devil In the Dark) 2) Cost of Living (The lower, the shittier) 3) Aquiel (The dog did it!) 4) Lonely Among Us (I hated it when it first aired in ‘87, I hate it now) 5) Imaginary Friend (The Shining twins) 6) The Loss (Troi: bitch, bitch, bitch) 7) Code of Honor (Trek’s racist episode) 8) The Dauphin (There were no dolphins in this episode) 9) Force of Nature (Josh and Alex said it best) 10) A Matter of Time (Poor Matt Frewer) 🖖😆

TinMan_7B9

The Higher.... the Fewer (good things it has). Seriously, no mention of "Cost of Living"?!?! The correct list is obviously this one: 1. Cost of Living 2. Suspicions 3. Liaisons 4. Aquiel 5. Q-Pid 6. Shades of Gray 7. The Outrageous Okona 8. Sub Rosa 9. Descent Part 2 10. Unification Part 2 (I will never forgive the awful writing for Sela and Spock) Dishonorable Mentions: - Angel One - When the Bough Breaks - Manhunt

Jonathan Llyr

“The Vengeance Factor” is not only one of the worst episodes, it also contains what I think is the worst line of dialogue, delivered in the worst possible way by the great Jonathan Frakes - “Parthas a la Yuta.” 🤮🤣

D Jammers

Yes,I actually hate part 2 more, at least in part 1 you have Data and the crew dealing with his eventual death and their reactions.

Target Audience

Cost of living has the Worf mud bath ending, instant save from the list.

D Jammers

Yep! and he says it twice!

Collin Freeman

5 of my top 10 least favorite episodes would all be in season 1, starting with The Naked Now. Then throw in Code of Honor, Angel One, Symbiosis, and When the Bough Breaks for good measure.

Target Audience

Fair point. I think growing up with clip shows in essentially every sitcom I watched as a kid made me accepting of it being a normal thing in the 80s/90s. Which is ironic considering how rare it is for me to accept that excuse. Also, obviously we didn’t have to wait a summer, so that helps.

TinMan_7B9

Mud bath = Lipstick on a pig (Literally!)

Kenneth Hynes

"And Picard is in it for some reason" is my new favorite Target Audience quote.

Mosquito_Wenzi

167 Manhunt 168 Shades of Gray 169 Masks 170 Imaginary Friend 171 Skin of Evil 172 Force of Nature 173 Descent, Part II 174 Violations 175 The Child 176 Aquiel

Mosquito_Wenzi

Well, technically, none of us agree with a list that doesn't match our own

Scarpad’s Domain

If it was one episode and not a two parter would have helped too, theres a good story here but it's horribly pdded

Paul

I'm a "The Loss" defender. Troi is annoying but reacts exactly as most people would if they suddenly lost, for instance, their sense of sight.

Joe J

Josh just going off...😆.

Raphael Gaytan

Perhaps. But even Riker has enough of her shit and this is his friggin’ Imzadi!

Josh Mariota

I actually liked "When the Bough Breaks", it's one of those episodes that doesn't really pop out, but also I'll include in my bingewatches. I'd say the same about Q-Pid, it's more of a nostalgia factor that the Robin Hood themes bring.

River Acheron

But it's got Alice from Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5 so there's that. (I forget her real name). But I agree. The eppie sucks.

River Acheron

I dunno if I judge episodes based on if they are a season finale. Maybe on a first watch, but after that when I binge I dunno that I see them as any more or less than a regular episode. Don't get me wrong it's not even on a top 10 best two-parters. But it's not awful either.

Numinous2019

'Lonely Among Us' is the single blandest episode of ST I can think of....No, make that what I'm prepared to think of. There may be blander, but I'm not going there. 'The Loss' presented an opportunity to do something interesting with Troi. Either have her like this for part of or a whole season, or at least restore her abilities to a degree where they can be consistent going forwards.

Numinous2019

The writers strike and behind the scenes issues explain a good deal of the bad in S1 and 2. So I'd factor that in. 'Time's Arrow' was not supposed to be a cliff-hanger, but ended up being one. That may explain quite a few of its faults. Worst 10...Aquiel, Masks, Lonely Among Us, The Neutral Zone (utterly generic 1980's SF script), The Royale (a silly pulp story setting isn't an excuse for a silly plodding episode), Samaritan Snare (plot logic is called out repeatedly onscreen), Menage A Troi (audience backlash led to some positive changes), QPid (shamelessly riding the wave of 2 Robin Hood movies at that time), Rascals (must try much harder), Force Of Nature. Rascals needed a much better script. Only Riker's spoof technobabble (inspired by Ronald Reagan in Desperate Journay?) was well written.

BN13

I didn't include Code of Honour on mine because in a weird way, it's one of my favorites because it was one of the first ones I saw as a kid. Because of that, I actually enjoy watching it. Also because of how over the top it is. I also didn't include Shades of Grey because I agree that's kind of a cop out in that that one just doesn't count. I don't consider it to be part of the series. It's like everyone's default #1 with an asterisk.

BN13

I almost put Cost of Living on my top 26 list.

BN13

Yes, that is how most people would react. But what if she lost her sense of sight on a ship full of blind people and acted like that? That's essentially what that episode is.

Andy

I always hated Gambit. Just a waste of a 2 parter that does nothing. Acquiel and Masks are crimes against humanity as well!

Matchstick Jose

You guys seem so happy. (Your hate has made you powerful.) From Memory Alpha: “When asked what he would have done differently in his time on Star Trek, Ronald D. Moore stated that he would not have written Aquiel.” 🤣

KingPin124

This was a fun video. Josh’s #1 surprised me a bit, but it was funny. I 10,000% agree with Alex’s #1. It’s the biggest definition of an E tier.

KingPin124

Whenever I see Matt Frewer, the first movie I think of is Honey I Shrunk the Kids. It’s one of those movies I watched so many times as a kid.

Paul

Me too lol

Paul

Blind from birth. They're used to it, in fact, they can't even perceive of the concept of sight. Extremely different hellscape to have sight for decades and then lose it.

Anthony Hernandez

I think Emergence and Code of Honor are my least favorite. 3rd episode and 3rd to last

Paul O'Neal

Hard for me to come up with a top ten worst, either because I can find something redeemable in a lot of episodes or (more likely) trauma has caused me to blank out the really terrible ones. That said, Aquiel tops my list as it's complete dogshit. Code of Honor, Masks, Emergence, Imaginary Friend, Up the Long Ladder, When the Bough Breaks, Force of Nature, Cost of Living and The Child probably round it out for me.

Loot Narsbaar

You guys are on crack! Time's Arrow 2 is so much worse! Twice the Twain!!

Loot Narsbaar

The Game can't be bottom 10 bad if you liked watching it! I'm kinda surprised there were so few season 1 episodes but the show did raise the bar.

Loot Narsbaar

FWIW the list you all are dying to see 10) Cost of Living 9) Imaginary Friend 8) Force of Nature 7) Up The Long Ladder 6) Time's Arrow 5) Decent II 4) Too Short A Season 3) The Outrageous Okana 2) Angel One 1) Code of Honor (racist piece of shit!! the worrrrrrrst!) It was hard to limit it to ten with so many season one and kid centric episodes

Jack Fletcher

I was born in 1970 and Max Headroom was stupid back then. The only thing was that it was the first real portrayal of a character meant to be a virtual person. There was a lot of discussion by people about whether it was an actual person or just computer generated, because it would’ve been such a shocker if AI was actually secretly that advanced. However, we eventually found out there was an actor. The actor was completely insufferable in that role too, but it was also quite rememberable for his goofy demeanor, and the fact that it was the first CGI generated character that popped into the zeitgeist so to speak

Ken R

"It's bad when it's boring as hell" finally someone gets what I am saying.

Ryan

Booby Trap *did* start with Geordi's date on the beach, because it taught me how to flirt with women: Hold up an umbrella drink and ask, "Another coco nono?"

Steve Syme

No one mentioned Justice?

SetsunaYuki

I ignore Force of Nature. I figure that certain areas of space are more sensitive to warp travel, but all of space?

Bantha Fodder

I’m surprised code of honor wasn’t on your lists. So bad in so many ways.

Alan Thompson

The irony of staring into a phone while not getting what The Game was about.
