Michael Nemo

Am I having deja vu or is this a re-up?

Terminaldogma01

I remember a story that one of the special FX artists bumped into one of the TRON actors years later and recognized him because of his nose. The nose he traced thousands of times doing the optical effects

Lt Dan I Scream

I dont hate this one but its really just space jam. the entire world feels like you are in a cartoon. for the time I am sure it was crazy. I was 3 so it was not really something I was into at the time.

THE LORE!!!

Greetings, programs! The phrase in Alan's cubicle is from The Day the Earth Stood Still. So the character is an old school sci fi nerd. End of line.

I first saw David Warner in time After Time witch came out in 79. Tron was the second movie I saw him in. Peter Jurasik played Crom. He later appeared in Babylon 5 as Londo Malari. Bruce Boxlitner (Tron) was in the series Scarecrow and Mrs King. Most of the sets and costumes in Tron were practical sets and costumes not CGI. The lighting affects were added post production. The sets and actors had black highlights on them so they could add lighting effects later.

I came here to drop this Lore, but THE LORE is of course one step ahead of me.

Pleasantly surprised y'all watched this one. As a kid, my folks had this recorded from the Disney Channel onto a VHS Cassette and I watched it over and over and over again. Even to this day, it's in my Top 5 favorite films as a "legacy" picture. And, yeah, it's utterly totally mundane, lulz. Tron is best enjoyed as a mood. That goes for the sequel as well. Objectively speaking, none of the Tron movies are very good (I still haven't seen Ares, but I'm not expecting a masterpiece), but the aesthetics are what make the franchise fantastic. For a good time, look into the making of the first Tron movie. As flawed as the writing and cinematography is, the entire process by which they did the effects is friggin' wild and almost torturous in its complexity. I still maintain that it's an accomplishment of artistic marvel, and the result is something truly unique and one-of-a-kind. But yeah... not all that great in overall delivery. Sometimes the things we love the most are also the most flawed~ Thanks for watching.

Never a fan growing up of the movie Tron, as a kid at the time, the arcade game came out shortly after the movie was released. I love the arcade game, but not the movie. I feel and I am not sure but the best part in the game was the bikes. so maybe that was why the bikes are best known. I do remember the effect beginning strange, but also gave us an idea of what can be done with computer graphics. I just watched it again with you both but in 4K it looks great, but still story is not there. Recommend Jeff Bridges in Starman (1984) John Carpenter movie

This film was a product of its time. As you mentioned, back in the day it was amazing. In the cold light of the present its dated, not just the cgi but the acting was wooden, even Bridges. I love this film because if its connections to Babylon 5, but no more on that.

Back in the day, this movie was great on drugs. It's a tough watch sober, and without the nostalgia, I can see it being very underwhelming.

No, you're right - TRON has a lot of heart. It might have its flaws, but it drew me in nonetheless. It was a product of its time and the excitement, enthusiasm, and imagination in that time of pushing early computer graphics boundaries. All that shone through.

I saw this when I was 10 when it came out. Of course as a 10 year old I was mesmerized. I have to agree that this isn't the best movie ever made, and it's not even really nostalgic for me. I have more vivid memories for Escape From New York, speaking of Kurt Russell. Today was the first time I have watched this for many years, and yeah 4 out of 10 seems fitting.

Steve Krautkramer

This movie never really did it for me. But I will say I’m very excited to see your reaction to Tron Legacy.

I graduted from high school the year this movie came out. It blew me away when I saw it. I didn't even know about computers at that time (I have been an IT professional for 40 years at this point). I think the story still holds up even if the special effects don't, but it definitely has a unique look. The girl (Lora) also played Lacey Underall in Caddy Shack (iykyk).

Mark Simonson

Tron was amazing to me at the time it hit. I tried to see it on opening night and the theater was so packed that I had to sit in the aisle for part of it. I was 26 and just getting into computers, so it was excited to see the first movie to feature more than a few seconds of computer-generated imagery, and I wasn’t disappointed. I just thought it was so cool—so cutting edge. I still like it, but I can totally see how underwhelming it would be for someone seeing it for the first time now. The story isn’t strong enough to carry it when the visuals have lost their novelty and impressiveness.

(1:46:45) - "she was FINE" in Caddyshack /snicker Even though Josh didn't mean it like that.

Untrue...or, at the very least, extremely uncharitable

This is one of those movies that everyone remembers but they really don’t remember it. That make sense? It’s like 2001. Everyone remembers the last 20 minutes but not the 2 hours before. The Shining is the same way (although that’s a better story).

Boggle

I loved Tron as a little kid, and I still love Tron as an adult. It's dated, has plot holes, and some of the acting is cheesy. And yet I honestly don't care. I just really enjoy the overall combination of things that make it Tron. I don't know if that makes sense to any of you, but it makes perfect sense to me.

Sequiro

I always found Tron "its fine" there was some really cool aspects about it but I never really craved to rewatch it like my favorites. But I never regretted watching it at all. I will say Tron 2.0 the video game was pretty good, I liked the game more than the movie.
