"Who wants to go to Romulus to tell Spock that Kirk died... again?"

Nolan

I think the problem people have with the Enterprise-D blowing up isn't necessarily that it was the Duras sisters. I think it was that the Duras sisters did it while in an 80 year old, out-dated ship. Give 'em a Vorcha-class or something at least.

Athos Count de la Fère

The original scene of Kirk getting shot in the back is out there. I remember seeing that outtake somewhere but that was decades ago.

bullettbot

I was so hoping you would read my take but I loved what you chose to read out to and listen to anyway.

Erik L Jerks

There's VERY grainy YouTube footage of the extended fight. It's just anti-climatic.

Forbidden Donut

I always bristle when bad writing gets waived off with 'it's a movie' or 'the movie doesn't happen if you change this bad writing decision'. That's just letting bad writing off the hook IMO. There's an easy fix to this, and they failed to do it. Change Guinan's dialog from 'You can leave any time, any where' to 'You can leave, but you'll be forced to go back just moments ahead of when you entered the Nexus.' That way, Picard isn't being stupid and shortsighted, he has no choice but to head straight back to Soran, and in this case it makes even more sense for him to get Kirk because he needs help. And when there isn't an easy fix (maybe there's a plot hole I'm not thinking of with my solution?), it's still a good idea to recognize when you've badly written an intelligent character like Picard, and respect the character enough to go back and come up with something that works for your story AND the character.

Lwaxana’s Poolboy

I’m pleasantly surprised you guys liked this movie! Not a criticism, but I’m genuinely surprised you didn’t notice the score. I feel it adds so much emotion to the film. It’s basically 50% of the movie’s vibe. The surprise reveal of the B at the start, Soran and Picard in ten-forward, the buildup to the battle, the battle, and the crash landing. All so good! All so impactful! And you can’t forget the end scene, simple and bittersweet, it feels like we’re saying goodbye to the TNG era and the D. Then again, y’all didn’t notice the BoBW score either which to this day I can’t believe. By any chance did you notice the score for Titanic? Great reaction though! Looking forward to First Contact!

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

There's a fan-made clip (about 2 minutes) that takes place on Veridian III shortly after the events of "Generations". It's a really nice take if you haven't seen it yet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC0ZHukgfl4 BTW - The original footage of Kirk being shot by Soran is available. The Blu-ray has it and it's posted on YouTube. It's...... meh. The slowly stretching chain links make the death more dramatic

Forbidden Donut

I have to take moment and laugh at myself. I decided when Generations was getting closer, I was going to give my best effort to make a strong take, and to make it one that was more likely to get read on the video. Spent weeks writing and revising it. Added, subtracted, streamlined, tried to make it 'punchier' to stand out. I kept it saved on my PC, so I could paste it in ASAP whenever the takes went up. I managed to be online, waiting for it to go up, and I was fast enough to make mine the second take posted. Then, I was pleasantly surprised when I had like nine people give positive feedback in the chat. "Sweet! Well, I did everything I could, and it looks kind of promising", I thought. ...................... "Not this time." LOL (Note: It's totally fine, by the way. I'm not entitled to anything here. I mostly just find it funny that this was how it went.)

Target Audience

Sorry brother! A tip - if I can’t fit the entire take into a screenshot on my phone, it is unlikely to be read. If you really want to get all of that included, you’d be better off splicing it up into several takes throughout the thread. It won’t all get read in the video, but a much better chance that some of it will.

Sam Langanke

Regarding if Kirk's Nexus scenario fits his character. I say no. Horses were not Kirk's thing. They were Picard's thing. But in real life they are also Shatner's thing. So there you go.

WEB

It's not Kirk's movie, yet it still blows him HARD at multiple points.. and people complain that it doesn't blow him hard ENOUGH. What did you want?! Fireworks and bald eagles? Robert and Rene dying is sad, but realize characters like that literally exist to give main characters things to react to.

Pixels At Dawn

I get what people are saying about when Picard chooses to go back to and why he didn't go further back. But do we think Picard would really mess with the timeline more than necessary to defeat Soran? Could have major consequences...

Todd

Alex is right. First Contact is a snooze fest.

Back Flip Bet

Shallow rock grave his hilarious

Loot Narsbaar

But seriously since it was brought up I don't have a problem with Kirk being racist in ST6. Being racist/ not racist is not binary. People who strive all their lives for justice and equality, such as Kirk, can still be racist at times because they are human and humans are flawed. The trick is to catch yourself admit you're wrong and learn from your failure. I find Kirk's prejudice against the Klingons to be very believable. His arc in the movie is to recognize his failure and overcome his shortcomings and he does so. I think it makes him very human. *(Sorry, wish I'd be able to comment this last movie where it was more on topic)

Loot Narsbaar

Alex's idea that each Trek movie should be a different genre is the best idea

Ca$hWednesday

Yeah, the whole plot hole with how the nexus works could be fixed with one line of dialog. It's seems like such an easy fix for the writers. I'm surprised it didn't happen.

Evan Guthrie

Interesting to hear your apprehension for Star Trek 8 based on the title. I guess we'll find out.

Evan Guthrie

Thanksgiving? Oh boy, that's a long wait

jon bolton

Considering my sense of humour it's a wonder i've never thought of the Enterprise of suffering from ejectile dysfunction😂

jon bolton

I know on your Generations discussion Josh you disagreed with part of this, we agree Jim had a hero's death saving the Enterprise B, and from my perspective again a second time when he died helping Picard on Veridian 3. The main thing we didn't agree on, i've always considered his death on the Enterprise B as him dying alone as he predicted in Star Trek 5. Sure he was on a busy ship (apart from half of the crew not due to arrive until Tuesday😋), but he was alone on Deck 15 at the time he officially died in the 23rd century.

Joe Concepts

Nice. Thanks for reading my take, guys. And maybe “ruining” Family is a bit harsh, but sometimes on a rewatch I remember what happens in this movie and get annoyed.

Numinous2019

Nicholas Meyer and Danny Martin Flynn wrote that Kirk character arc. Movies require such an arc. The issue is character consistency. TV Kirk either overcame such prejudices during the episode, or refused to succumb to them. I found Kirk's overt hostility to Klingons jarring when I saw ST 6 in the cinema. It may work if you only consider the movie, but it is inconsistent with the TV Kirk. And TV Kirk had 79 episodes broadcast for 25 years by that time.

Numinous2019

Meyer also gave Kirk the arc of never facing death before in ST 2. Jarring as well, since TV Kirk lost Edith Keeler, his brother, his mentors, friends, crewmen, etc. All of which Kirk felt deeply.

Numinous2019

The script writes itself into corners due to creating The Nexus as the main plot device. Moore and Braga then have to extract the characters from those corners using logic specific only to the current scene to get to the next scene. There is no point in trying to reason out why characters do what they do, since the script has to resolve the overall scenario in a specific amount of run time. It's basically a first draft screenplay due to the intense production schedule.

Utterlee

I never get the criticisms that this film just feels like a long episode. It's incredibly cinematic and does all sorts of things that a regular episode would have never been able to afford to do, including the scope of the central story itself. It feels massive, it feels expensive, the character moments go much further and much darker than an episode ever would.

ShazD

Pretty sure even Moore and Braga admit it's a massive plot hole.

ShazD

I don't think they notice music. Some people do and some people don't, I think people have different sensitivities to music. I agree though that Generations' score elevated the movie significantly and that holds true for all of the TNG movies.

Summer

Rewatch Voyage home, so many character moments, yes after 50 viewings I wish this character and this one talked more but it really is a great very Trek movie. Don’t insult the Bonding that way, it is better than Generations. I give Generations a b. I would definitely watch a rewatch of Voyage home…..more than the others but I won’t kid myself, I would rewatch any of them with you but Voyage home is tops

29:03 - Now that you guys mentioned the alternate ending, here are four deleted scenes from the 2-disc DVD edition from 2003 or 2004, with introductions by cast & crew to three of them, posted on YouTube, including that alternate ending, which is last; the first one is the alternate opening scene which involves orbital skydiving (Introduction included from Rick Berman (interviewed for DVD in 2003 or 2004), William Shatner, James Doohan, and Walter Koenig (All interviewed in 1994), the second one is an extended scene of the moment when Data pushed Dr. Crusher into the freezing water (which also includes the aftermath of what happened afterward), the third one is another extended scene where Picard is in the Nexus, spending Christmas with his "own, but new" family (Introduction included by Rick Berman & Herman Zimmerman, both interviewed for DVD from '03 or '04), and then the fourth and final deleted scene is the alternate ending for the movie (Introduction by Rick Berman, interview in '03 or '04). Hope you enjoy, gentlemen! 🖖 https://youtu.be/JUtSQFqdcgA?si=TtrNMAS_qVugqd53

Numinous2019

The plotting / story structure is what gives rise to the criticism it is a 2 part TNG TV story. Movies require a stronger story spine than TV, because they need greater momentum and narrative economy. Generations' script feels very TV to me. A patchwork of scenes and no sense that it couldn't have been re-worked differently. This is not a compelling way to write this kind of story / theme.

Loot Narsbaar

Maybe the most interesting from these discussions is this assumption that only Picard knew Kirk had died assisting him. I never even considered it. To me it would be so disrespectful to leave him buried under rocks (because as Plinkett would say “that’s when the animals come”). I always assumed his body was retrieved when the D’s crew was rescued to be given a proper burial. The other idea I don’t agree with is the idea Kirk left heaven to sacrifice himself again. The Nexus isn’t heaven. Both Kirk and Picard are there for like ten minutes and are like this isn’t real and actually it sucks. I am not seriously tempted to stay. One of the of the things that defines Soran as a villain is the paradise he’s trying to reach isn’t actually paradise.

Loot Narsbaar

Also I think tv show Picard might argue that Kirk doesn’t belong in the 24th century and if he leaves the nexus he should go back to the Enterprise-B and continue his life from where he left off. Because Kirk is in fact still alive and not actually dead.

Loot Narsbaar

In fairness much of what I know of Kirk is through the movies as I’ve only seen parts of TOS. So “Movie Kirk” compared to “TV Kirk” is a barrier I can respect

Philbot

In my head canon the bridge got remodeled between all good things and Generations because they had one final show down with both Sela and Tomalok! They tried a pincer move on them and JLP out classed them but the bridge was destroyed.. fans have speculated that bridge modules were replaceable you can just unscrew them and put in a new one? I don’t know if that would be necessary because aside from the “Yesterday’s enterprise” consoles the ship is exactly the same.

Dark Kronis

Picard could have gone anywhere any time with nexus, so i have gone back two weeks, warned the family and arrested Soran before any suns were blow up, i also feel Kirk paradise would have been the bridge of the enterprise from Tos, and him having to accept he moved past it to help picard

Edweirdo

The original Star Wars movies were called "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi" when released. No numbers, so Star Trek was not the first.

jon bolton

The point Alex made was interesting about Kirk choosing to do something heroic which cost him his life rather than a fake happy eternity. In some ways it can be compared to what happened to Captain Pike when Spock took him to Talos IV but admittedly that was different circumstances.

jon bolton

I only saw the trailer for this afterwards, but i know it would piss you off if you had seen it in advance, seeing Kirk and Picard talking, Guinan in it, and the Enterprise crashing.

reactive1

You can see all of the deleted scenes on YT including Kirk’s original death getting shot, Geordi getting tortured, and the original opening with Kirk doing an orbital skydive and Scotty and Chekov talking to him about going to the Enterprise-B. Playmates did an action figure of Kirk in his orbital skydive suit.

reactive1

In universe, Generations takes place about 6 1/2 months after “All Good Things”.

reactive1

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the shot of the Bird of Prey exploding was reused from ST6.

Jonathon Tsagris

I think the idea of a whole family burning to death in a house fire in the 24th century is completely unbelievable. You’re telling me this big sprawling mansion, built largely of stone, had a fire sweep through it so quickly that several people died, and there were no 24th century building codes requiring smoke alarms, or fire suppression systems; or emergency beam outs or something? No barking dogs to wake the family?

Doug

They actually mentioned this in the video around 9:45

reactive1

Ok thanks, I missed that.

John M.

Robert rejects technology, though. Always been my head canon.

Jonathon Tsagris

This is why even now we have building codes and regulations; to make sure people are protected from themselves.

They did say Guinan was an El'Aurian way back in her first season 2 appearance. Guinan askes Wesley what all he knows about her, and one of the only things he knows is that she's an El'Aurian. I feel like the writers were originally going to go in a very different direction with Guinan with her being more of a mysterious Q rival. With both Q and Guinan secretly guiding humanity in their own way. But over the years, i think they decided to retcon anything mysterious or interesting about Guinan by making the El'Aurians just regular dudes. "Oh, all of that time sensitivity stuff? That was just the Nexus." "That mysterious past with Picard? That was just a crappy 2-parter." "Q being afraid of Guinan? Um, yeah let's just hope everyone forgets that." I think Guinan and the El'Aurians were way more interesting pre Time's Arrow when they left everything about her mysterious and vague. The answers they eventually gave us for them just feel like lame cop outs over what could have been something really interesting.

Brian Roman

They might be a bit complacent in the 24th century on Earth, outside of Star fleet. So used to everything being safe and easy they probably have a lot of vulnerabilities
