Matchstick Jose

This video appears to be missing Conan O'Brien and Kate Mulgrew doing a jig. I thought that was gonna be a permanent addition...

I'm seriously impressed with the instantaneous recall of small references to TNG, or when the last time something was shown on DS9 (e.g. empty holosuite).

Wizard Michael

I’ve never been a huge fan of this episode but I do think it’s a great way to introduce more on the ways in which the dominion works, and how cruel the changelings are. Creating a race that is dependent on them, plus mixing in all sorts of good character moments. This reaction helped me appreciate it more!

Indeed Alex got it right. Before, Odo didn't care for pretty much anything 'personal' and literally 'slept' at work. That was just his way and probably how he lived since the Cardassian days before the current admin came in. So, not lack of compassion I think. The moment he actually asked for quarters he got em. Kira cares for Odo a lot. She ended up the one fighting for Odo and ended being the one to console him in the Season opener. For me a B I think? Carried by character interaction, it's pretty rare for me to be floored by that kinda stuff. And of course it fills out the world lore.

"The Abandoned" may not be a barn burner, but it certainly continued the trend of higher quality episodes coming out of this show. In the past two seasons there have been stretches where I honestly simply didn't give a darn. But so far, most if now all of the episodes in S3 I think have been really watchable. So we get to meet a Jem'Hadar in this one. While I'm not sure how in-line this episode is with how Jem'Hadar are portrayed in the future, it's an interesting investigation into how they are developed and grown. It also shows us just how deep their genetic conditioning is. Odo's quest to treat the Jem'Hadar with kindness is admirable but ultimately doomed to failure. Was he wrong to try though? At this point, I would say no. We can't know how deeply they are programmed without this episode. Otherwise it's just fear and speculation. I really love the last scene between Kira and Odo regarding all this. It's interesting how the Jem'Hadar acts around Odo. Do you think they just didn't quite develop how the Founders are viewed as Gods yet? Or is the God-fearing nature of the Jem'hadar a learned rather than a programmed behavior? Great ending though and great direction too from Avery Brooks!
