YouTube video is scheduled to premiere tomorrow morning (10am eastern), so in the meantime you can watch it here natively on Patreon. I will post the YouTube link in the morning.

IIRC Tom Paris was written as the same cadet from the Wesley episode but something about writers credits and pay to the OG writer of the TNG episode caused them to change the characters name and backstory before they started.

Tom O’Malley

Probably the fourth time watching this reaction in one form or another. Laughed every time. ‘We’re over 70k light years from home’ and Josh is more upset about a betazoid he knew for 20 seconds 😂 YouTube top 5 video by tomorrow night hopefully! 🤞

Dru Blood

My favorite of all the Trek series... As is evident from my profile Pic 😁 Glad you guys had a good time with the start and are appreciating the characters.

MarkF

Really glad (and relieved) you liked this! Although probably not my favorite Trek show, it's certainly near the top of the list for me.

Dipper

Only my 2nd. Syncing up the episode is a huuuuuge pain in the ass. Worth it, though.

Rob

The Nick Locarno character was going to be used in Voyager with the same actor reprising the role but it turned out that the writer who created the character for The First Duty would have to be paid royalties for every episode the character appeared. This would have ended up being rather costly so the choice was made to change the characters name but keep some of the backstory.

Summer

The first time I saw this in 2008 I had not seen DS9 and mostly had memories of TNG, so I didn’t get Quark’s joke until years later when I watched DS9 the first time (bridge crew, I trust you keep track of interesting things the guys say.)

How many bits of trivia have you guys been told already? For example Robert Picardo in audition adlibbed 'the thing' unintentionally when he saw he was a hologram that gets turned on and off. "I'm a Doctor, not a lightbulb!" Halfway through the video and we had Jacody and Bulimia Torres. It's a good journey, but my favourite is DS9. And I do get the favourite and best distinction. There will be that for the movies ahead for me. Like the difference between 'Oh wow that was incredible' vs. 'but I just like this more' Again, so many things in discussion where we all we can do is give each other shifty looks here. There could be a few clip reels of you guys mentioning something that's later delivered. Like our Betazoid officer =)

Reality Strikes

This reminds of TOS. Janeway has to teach the Caretaker that the Ocampa must grow up and survive on their own.

Gary Lewis

Like I said, the original character that was created in first duty if you use that character again in another series since that writer is not a producer on the series the production team has to take money out of each weeks budget for the series and pay that freelance writer an amount of money for using his character that he created for one episode and producers and executive producers and show runners really don’t like to waste their weekly budget paying a writer who only wrote one episode to keep using a character now sometimes if that character is so likable and that writer is also producer an executive producer or showrunner or has the creative title it’s perfectly acceptable because if they are the executive producer, head, writer and showrunner that money comes out of his weekly pay
