Reality Strikes

Nailed it. Mulgrew is by far the superior choice. If this were the captain I don’t know if I’d watch the show.

Matthew Gnostic

There’s a video someone made adding lyrics to the Ds9 intro that I think would be a great react (spoiler free)

Captain Super Voyage

As I saw someone else say about this performance Captain Plainway. She was set to have a different first name in the show with this actress. Mulgrew was one of a handful of top choices before they went with Bujold. The list of women they had as their top options was an impressive list of some big names in acting at the time. I don't remember the whole list but one was former Charlie's Angles Kate Smith. There is a video on YouTube somewhere that goes into all that. So yes Mulgrew had to step in quickly, but from the sounds of it she was on the list so may have already done auditions for the part which would have given her time to think about how she wanted to play the part and some lines of the script. Bujold was a very successful actor who wasn't nearly as dull as she was here so she may have been going through something or just not into this role so she and the Voyager team decided to part ways mutually. This clip makes her look like an actress who wasn't going to have success in the business, but from what little of her I've seen clips of in other things isn't correct. Either way Mulgrew I think would have been a far better option even on Bujold for this part any day.

IIRC, they canned Eric Stoltz because he was playing Marty too seriously. Michael J. Fox was a better deadpan reactor to Doc's insanity (not a slam on Christopher Lloyd, I love him; he gave 1000% to that role). As for Captain Bujold... I'm sure she's fantastic in the right roles. Here she sounds like she's explaining the afternoon lunch specials to the crew. This plus your ongoing Voyager reactions are helping me realize just how hard Kate Mulgrew stepped in and CRUSHED it.

Dru Blood

She was just too subdued...no command presence at all...Kate on the other hand, nailed it from the moment she steps on the screen.

I still wish you would record a reaction to the other scenes. I think they contrast the two portrayals of Janeway much better than this particular scene.

MartyMc

The hot Betazoid was played by Alicia Coppola, (no relation to Francis). She later had a big role in Jericho, a great post nuclear war show on CBS

The actress who was originally supposed to play the captain was a French Canadian actress who used to doing film work and she’s used to doing 2 to 4 pages of dialogue a day and she couldn’t hack trying to do between seven and 12 pages of dialogue a day. Her hand is in one scene that they didn’t take out. They didn’t shoot two different pilots like the cage in this case although her character‘s name would have not been Katherine Janeway. It would’ve been Nicole Janeway and that is the one thing I miss out of all the episodes. They didn’t find a way to have the Nicole Janeway meet Katherine we never got that like we got with the cage pilot in the menagerie because they picked up with the same TV movie. They didn’t shoot two different stories with two different captains. They just work from the same tail play now sometimes where the one actress was sitting in the scene, they made the other actress standing in the scene, but they never changed any of the dialogue from the original teleplay of the two part Television Movie

The other thing guys was that she was an award-winning actress and the network being Paramount UPN wanted to use the fact that she was an award-winning actress and Michael pillar and Jerry Taylor pulled for her and wanted her and Rick Berman was the guy in the room going, I don’t think she can hack doing a weekly series where Kate McGrew came from Ryan’s Hope where she was used to doing 40 pages of dialogue a day with a soap opera, so 12 pages of dialogue or seven pages of dialogue in a day for an hour drama is a walk in the park for an actress of her caliber. Another thing that you guys are not aware of is that Kate McGrew was Not on the original list two famous actresses who are on the list before her was Lindsay Wagner from the bionic woman who would’ve been my choice after Avery Brooks got Cisco, and then there was also Linda Hamilton from beauty and the beast, and from the terminator they were considered, but somehow Kate McGrew convinced the Paramount executive and Rick Berman that she could do the job and she came in an emergency and they shot the pilot in the remaining days they had after wasting a day and a half shooting the same scenes with this actors in this scene that you’ve seen was only a day and a half and Rick Berman came down, which people don’t usually come down on, sat and met her at the trailer and said go home. This is not working for you. You’re not used to this kind of grind you used to taking more time making a film and having an intimate relationship with your director which she didn’t get along with the director of the pilot so Rick Berman center home and the rest is history, but I would’ve picked Lindsay Wagner out of the group of people, but that was my choice, but history has been made and care got the job and the rest of his history
