Friday, we sat down with our first ever interview guest - Gates McFadden

Gates was incredibly kind and generous with her time; she shared a lot of thoughtful and hilarious stories from her time on The Next Generation. She also gave fascinating insight into the production environment of the show at the time including what it was like advocating for characters on screen, and creative opportunities behind the camera.

This was a surreal moment for us. Getting to talk with Gates about the stagecraft of Star Trek was an absolute honor. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.

Thank you all for supporting Alex & myself, and helping make opportunities like this possible. - Josh 🖖

*wipes tear* Our boys grow up so fast

Actuarial Lurker

Congratulations! Great questions....she doesn't look 77 years old.. now I feel old....

StonyD

Nice! She came off as very relaxed and this all felt like a natural conversation. You've unlocked a new level for this channel. Get Denise Crosby next!

AAckeret

Fun interview, congratulations.

BusterB

You guys were amazing. Being part of this journey means lots to me and I'm sure many others on your crew, I remembering waiting days for the next season 5 TNG reaction to come out and now you guys get to interview Gates McFadden!. My only regret is not joining sooner.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Wow, amazing work and interview! Also thanks for the extended segment on Genesis, such an underrated episode!

Summer

Gates Mcfadden is amazing

Mark Magana

I would love a video talking about / explaining how this came about!

Paul O'Neal

Knocked it out of the park with this one, guys! Great interview and Gates was honest, insightful, and charming. I don't know how you two didn't get too star struck to carry out the interview, but big tip of the hat for that. Looking forward to more.

startrekiborg

Wow guys, that was awesome. I think for low budget, first timers, you did a good job. I really enjoyed it. She definitely put a couple of toes in the water of spoils, but I don't think she said too much. If she said anything, it was well worth it for the interview.

Philbot

She almost got spoilery on First Contact for a minute there I can see the boys like . 🙉🙉

Goobabies

One of you should have dressed like a spider and the other like a candle

John A

What an amazing experience. Josh and Alex, you both did a great job. Gates seems so easy to talk with. Met her once, but did not get to chat with her much. How do you both feel now that you are going to conventions and interviewing the stars of the shows?

Badger

I’m guessing you will be smiling for awhile 😁 We are all so happy for you!

Strekonline.com

Well done, guys! This is the best Gates interview I've seen. So many ask the same questions over and over that it's predictable. Here you took unique angles and added unique context. Great conversational interview. It was amazing!

Marcus BlueSky

While I am watching this I'm still shaking my head. Still can't believe it what I'm seeing. I'm sincerely happy for you two that you got the opportunity to make this interview. Well done. I really had a blast. Thank you for this. The only downside was that it was over much too fast. Question : Will there some additional video or in ep3 where you reveal how you managed to pull this off, when did you you know ( you mentioned "3 months ago" in your teaser for this ep). Will you probably show some footage which didn't make it into this cut?

Target Audience

We will talk about it the next time we do a live stream, which based on how many Patreon sign ups we’ve gotten should be soon Also probably when we film the next reaction on Monday (DS9 S3E20)

Marcus BlueSky

I'm glad to hear. Looking forward to that. Thank you for the quick reply.

D Jammers

So proud of you guys getting the opportunity to do this and knocking it out of the park. Gates was talking about the immediate response you get from a crowd during a live performance. But the nice thing about ST she gets the delayed gratification from her fans so many years later.

The Travelers Travels

How Awesome to have Gates as a guest! She's looking great! I'm kind of disappointed that Josh didn't have his "Directed by Gates McFadden" shirt on under his button up, and tear it open (like Superman) to reveal it to her! ...... maybe next time

Nicky Dawson

Had no idea Gates directed Genesis. It's my favourite episode of TNG

Matchstick Jose

Really enjoyable discussion. Wish you could have had more time to go even more in depth. There’s a fascinating undertone here of some resentment Gates feels toward Patrick Stewart and how some of his decisions sidelined Crusher and diminished what she was given to do on the show and in the movies. I hope you try to interview some of the writers. They can probably give you more time and you can really get into the nitty-gritty of their creative process and writing decisions they made for specific episodes.

Spacecataz

I was clenching for them while watching lol

Harry Broos

Great stuff, but really wish you would have asked her things like which cast member had the biggest potty mouth? or if there were any prop or sets that blew her mind? or if that was her or a stunt double that fell off the ship? Just dumb questions for my childish mind lol

Target Audience

IMO I don’t think it’s resentment I think it’s (in her perspective) the facts of the situation and it is what it is

Matchstick Jose

I agree that she seems more resigned about it now (a lot of time and distance from it), but just from the way she describes the kind of person she was then I have to imagine it caused some hard feelings at the time at least. But that's just speculation on my part. I don't know if she's ever spoken about it.

JoeCensored

When she brought up First Contact I was thinking "oh god, no spoilers, no spoilers..."

Nick Marten

Loved it but boy did I start to get nervous when she started to talk about First Contact.

Sam Langanke

I had the same impression. There were too many "but Patrick" in there to be by chance.

Sam Langanke

Congratulations! For your first big interview that was a job well done. I hoped Sub Rosa and Genesis would be substantial and I was not disappointed in this regard. What I missed was The Dancing Doctor.

Jack Molitor

Love this. Mostly because I know what it meant to you guys. Precious memories.

Biggysteve

She was clearly touched by the praise given on her directorial stint on Genesis. She’s proud of that one. Great job, dudes!

David Wayne Fox

I was smiling through this whole interview. I'm so happy and proud for you both...may there be many more like this!

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

Great interview! She said that she likes your channel! 😲 😱 😲 OMG! OMG! Great questions and Gates was so open in her answers. Can't wait for the next guest interview!

Ryan

What a triumph. Gates McFadden was as down to earth and engaging as I've always heard she is, and you guys conducted a great interview -- you kept it on track (hooray for a lengthy Genesis discussion!!), but you also let it wander a bit to some interesting places. I'm so pleased that you did this and shared it with us. AND I'm thrilled that you hadn't seen Star Trek 5 (?) years ago and now you're interviewing cast members. Thanks for going all out on this franchise.

Erorus

Very well done!

Collin Freeman

That was so awesome. Gates was a good choice to have as a first guest. So very personable. Great interview, guys.

Daniel Garrett

YOU GUYS... were born for this. 🖖 I’ve been with you since your first reaction to "The Man Trap." Seeing you sit across from Dr. Crusher now is a remarkable milestone, and I hope it’s the first of many. ✨ Your evolution throughout this journey—specifically your attention to the 'craft' of writing, direction, makeup, and effects—clearly empowered you to ask informed, laser-focused questions. By giving Gates the space to breathe, you allowed her to share stories we’ve never heard before. That moment where she realized the depth of her impact as a role model was pure magic. Watching your transition from fans to professional-caliber interviewers has been a highlight of following this channel. You’ve become true experts of the legacy. Couldn't be prouder to be part of the journey. 🥂

Aaron Thorpe

I love Captain Picard. I think Patrick Stewart's acting is phenomenal. But Patrick Stewart the 'producer' (whether he was given a title or not) has led to many questionable and downright unfortunate decisions in Trek. He is not a writer, and sometimes I wish he had stayed out of the behind-the-scenes a bit more.

Encarta

Fantastic interview guys. Truly well done. It's great to see that your first interview follows the same method you two use to review episodes. We can all watch the show, speculate on how we think they did things. Read things on the internet that may or may not be true. Why not go straight to the source and ask them? I hope you get to do many more interviews like this.

Banes

Congrats guys! Wonderful

Eddy Dew

Could Alex be happier in that thumbnail?

Ian Meyers

I'm gonna watch this a little later today, just wanted to drop a comment and say I'm so happy for you guys and the journey y'all have been on so far. If this interview is as good as the comments say (let's be honest, it will be), you guys will probably have a genuine chance with other cast and crew. Good luck guys, for real. I look forward to seeing you on the Brent and Jonny set. 🖖

Walt Vita

I tried to give her a high 5 at the vegas convention once.. she said "I don't do that" lmao.. she is a little like Brent spiner.. high and mighty in real life.. you guys prolly didn't see that side of her

Raphael Gaytan

Congratulations, Josh and Alex, on scoring an interview with freakin’ Gates McFadden!! What I liked about it was that it came off as less of an “interview” and more of an honest chat between two guys who love Star Trek and an actor who enjoyed connecting with her fans! It made me legit happy to see the joy you guys brought her! It was a great time and I’m excited to see where this leads for you both! 🖖

Tom Roger Edvardsen

Our reaction pups, talking to the goddess of TnG, wow. I am star struck, on their behalf, and nervous😂

Mister Hope

I wouldn’t want an unsolicited high five from a stranger either.

Jill Barker

Great interview. You could see that Gates was really happy that you enjoyed her work on TNG. A suggestion for next time - a wonderful person to interview is Marina Sirtis - she is so funny, outspoken and really has no filter when discussing all the cast, production and writers. If she agreed you would have a ball.

Matt Newmark

I winced for a second when she started talking about First Contact but thankfully that didn't go anywhere. WHAT an interview - not one Gates will forget and frankly kicked the door WIDE OPEN for other Star Trek people to appear. Exceptional work, gentlemen.

LonghillAndy

Anyone else notice when gates mentioned “climactic sexual” about Sub Rosa then it cut back to Josh & Alex, Alex looked so pink in the face like omg Gates McFadden just mentioned climaxing in front of me 🤣

Target Audience

Would absolutely love that! Not sure how often she comes to the US though.

LonghillAndy

Fair play to Married Josh not going pink at that moment as well 👏 😂

Mister Hope

Without sounding patronizing I want to say I’m really proud of you guys. Thank you for asking questions that we know only you guys could ask with your unique perspective of Star Trek. I thought you guys handled the interview very professionally and I can definitely see this format working for you in the future.

Target Audience

I don’t get embarrassed talking about sex, everyone likes it! Who cares!

Anthony Hernandez

This was great, I've been looking forward to this since the trailer on Friday. It felt like I was there with you guys in the interview feeling the nerves! Extremely well done! It looks like she has a very kind personality IRL.

ChemicalCrash

That…was…awesome! Thanks so much guys for making this amazing interview happen. Some day you gotta tell us how you made it come to be 🤩

Remi Samson

Didn't see the trailer so this was a heck of a surprise!!! So awesome! 🖖

David Kirk

Good chance of her coming whenever there is a Star Trek Convention I guess. She's been to many in the past but no idea if she still does them.

David Kirk

Can't wait until they interview Ron Moore!

Jon Reid

Yeah boys this was great. You need to interview the rest of the cast. Hopefully they'll be up for it!

Naglfarius

Well maybw they get recommended from the ones who were already on the Podcast, so it will become a Snowballeffect... First of many i hope.

Pixels At Dawn

That was awesome guys. I could have easily watched another hour of you and Gates chatting - and it was not just the usual chat either. Hope we get more of these 🙂

Naglfarius

You made her Day with your Sub Rosa comments. ^^

Eddy Dew

Just finished it, fantastic and candid interview, and it's actually really nice to learn new things after all these years of being a Trekkie and watching sooo many interviews with the TNG crew. Thanks to your inciteful questions, nice work guys!

Craig

Wondeful listen. Congratulations guys! And may it be the first of many interviews. Keep up the outstanding work!

Marcus BlueSky

I fully agree. But I would go one step further. I think Gates went out of the interview with a feeling of belated acknowledgement for her work. Their compliments felt very sincere and I had the feeling she appreciated this a lot. I would like to believe Josh and Alex pushed the door wide open for a part 2 some day.

ImageMaker

Listened to this on my way back home on a long drive. Absolutely loved it and got a little pop for myself. I believe you mentioned your response to my comment on that voyager video. Hope this is just the first of many of these type of opportunities you guys get.

Carsten Bergner

Great interview guys! Allways a pleasure meeting Gates at cons. Dancing together at the FedCon party… memories…

Dave Danekas

This was an absolute treat! Waiting for the next TA post to drop brings the same joy as waiting a whole week for the “next Trek episode” back in the day. Looking forward to what’s next! Nicely done gentlemen.

Jill Barker

There is a hilarious complete film on You Tube of all the major TNG cast stage presentation at the Las Vegas convention. Not sure which year it was but Marina took over, got rid of the official presenter and sorted all the fan questions with the rest of the cast. She was so funny, and Patrick , Jonathan , Gates, Brent, Levar and Michael Dorn were brilliant. They told some wonderful stories about filming and directing. I remember John de Lancie was on that panel too. Really worth a watch.

Dr. Paul Stubbs

Great work, fantastic interview! I really enjoyed it and hope you have the opportunity for many more. Maybe you should reach out to Dayton OH legend Ken Jenkins about his powerhouse performance in Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 Episode 1 "Evolution".

penoyer79

Mister hope - i was going to say the same thing

Todd

Josh and Alex - you did a great job as interviewers here. Gates really gave some juicy tidbits about Patrick and it explains a lot about the rest of the TNG movies. Aside from that, she seems like she really enjoyed sharing some in-depth info about her experiences.

KingPin124

That was awesome, guys! You did a great job. We’re all happy for you.

Scott in Scotland

You don't need me to tell you this is great but it certainly is.

Miranda

This is wonderful! I'm glad she has embraced the craziness of Sub Rosa. That script really is insane, but her performance is 100% committed and incredibly fun. It was also great to hear her talk about directing Genesis. Thanks, guys!

Highlander Reactions

So well done guys!!! Wow! I am absolutely blown away!! Almost 40 years of Trek fandom here.

Forbidden Donut

Did you start to clench up a bit when she started to talk about the next movie? I know I did lol But it sounds like she didn't give anything away, thankfully.

Lozman73

Well done Gents.., I imagine Gates was probably appreciative of how 'smart' your questions for her actually were, she really seemed to enjoy your interview..., not just the average fan boy 'Crushers' Bravo

JRandolph

Man, I REALLY hope you guys showed her the t-shirt and just edited that out of the posted interview! This was very well done, and much better than most of the interactions she gets in panels.

Jeremiah

Really well done! Great questions and great answers from Gates. Thanks for giving your guest time to speak and not interrupting like nearly every modern interviewer 😂

David Jevón

Congratulations. I'm happy for both of you. I would've been smiling my ass off. 😁😁😁😁

Cranky Grandma

Wow. This was fantastic. Great interview. Not typical, very natural, full of energy. She is a wonderful guest to have. I’m a woman in my mid sixties, and boy some of the sexism comments (some direct, some implied) hit home.

Target Audience

It's funny because we both said going in "interviewers interrupt people way too much, we need to let her talk", but didn't realize how common of an opinion that is haha

Deep Red

I am totally someone who gets starstruck whenever I've had the opportunity to meet famous people. So happy for you guys. I love how willing to engage with the community and fans most of the Star Trek cast is. Time to call Bill Shatner

Skullman8942

Probably our boy Michael Dorn

ryhoyarbie

That was a nice interview. I probably would have asked her if she wanted to direct any of the DS9 or Voyager episodes. Seems like she wanted to take another swing at it, but it's also sad she kept on getting turned down until the Genesis episode. It's weird the higher ups kept on saying no to her about directing.

Tim Nikiforovs

As others have said, it felt more like a conversation than a typical interview, and that made it so much better. Loved seeing her light up at how much you guys appreciated her work, especially as a director. Seriously, good for you guys. You've come so far in the last 4 years. Here's to at least 4 more.

Derek Locke

GREAT Interview guys! I can't imagine how cool that must have been for you! Gates is a class act, most definitely. It's really a shame that TNG hadn't started a decade later. In the mid to late 80's and into the early 90's, women just weren't given the same opportunities. Nanna Visitor and Terry Farrell began to crack that door open more in DS9, and Kate Mulgrew, Roxanne Dawson and eventually Jerri Ryan blew that door open in subsequent years. Would've liked to see Gates and Marina given the same opportunity. Still, what a pleasure to talk to her!
