Wooo! Our weekly X-Files fix! A super episode and a sequel to boot! Glad you both enjoyed this episode as much as I do. Tooms is arguably one of the best returning antagonists. Also a return of the Smoking Man and your introduction to A.D. Skinner! As a big X-Files fan it's great to see you both enjoying the show as much as many of us do. Whilst mostly episodic I love that they dip back to previous episodes and storylines, it is one of the shows strengths, in my humble opinion. Look forward to watching the next episode with you both :)

Thicketdweller🦊

I slept late today and look what I found when I woke up, This is awesome, this episode really cemented the quality of the series for me granted I didn’t see it until into the second season, but I had already seen the first part originally in the summer after the season finale, but when I saw the first part, I thought it was just interesting because it was an ex-file but when I saw the second part, I knew the series had continuity in a way that many series did not Keep it up you’ll be interviewing, David Duchovny, and Jillian Anderson before long guys

Sherman Lin

Yeah couldn't say before because it was a spoiler like Star Trek in Mudds Women and I Mudd...X-Files will revisit interesting episodes....and again its guaranteed you will like X-Files more in my opinion than you know what

Sherman Lin

Your schedule on X-Files is perfect....leave them...and me wanting more...one a week is perfect

Sam Langanke

Does anybody know if "Supernatural" was supposed to be a parody of "X-Files"? Sure, it became its own thing but at the beginning I often thought that for example Sam and Dean's pretending to be FBI agents (with Rockstar names) was a direct spoof.

Prof Moff

I challenge anyone to say that you had "Killed by escalator" on your bingo card.

Collin Freeman

Duchovny's portrayal of Mulder here is another good example of a guy who is bit geeky and somewhat lacking in social skills and tact. I think Josh was starting to say something to this effect when you said, "It's like he doesn't understand...". Exactly. He's so bought in to his beliefs of the paranormal, extraterrestials, etc., that he forgets or doesn't understand that he has to choose his words more carefully when explaining his theories and accusations to "civilians".

Collin Freeman

Squeeze or Tooms: Sophie's choice. I like them both a lot, but for me, I think Squeeze slightly edges out Tooms just because of the uniqueness of the monster when I first saw it.

Keith S

Just realized if this was real and Tooms had been successful with his hibernation. He would have come out of it 3 years ago. The death by escalator seen was kind of gross. Hover if the water in that toilet had been brown instead of blue green I would have lost my lunch.

Martin Wilson

Fun fact back in the day in the uk the two Tooms episodes were released on vhs together and was one of my most watched tapes. Loved this reaction guys can’t wait for what’s coming.

Ryan

Great direction by David Livingston! I love when a show returns to a storyline not because they're out of ideas, but because they have more to say. Since we got to see Tooms' full gory nature in Squeeze, using him here as a springboard to the delicate intraoffice politics of the X-Files was brilliant. And yeah, lighting, lensing, pacing, music -- everything was on. Those atonal echoing plucked strings or whatever they are became a cliché because they work. I also still love that this was supposed to be your add-on side project and it's become your favorite show. If only you didn't have to watch all that Star Trek! (I'm kidding don't ever stop watching Star Trek please.)

Demijan Omeragic

Simply amazing season one gem. Your reaction / review was a joy to watch. And yes... you should do two episodes. :D You probably will... once you get to season two, lol.

MrDeadstu

"Victor Tooms? Wait, Eugene Victor Tooms? Why does that name sound familiar? OMG is this fucking stretchy-man!" Yes Alex, yes it is. Alex and Josh, Enjoy.

tyranusfan

Not a parody, but heavily influenced by, as many of the production and crew on the show were X-Files vets, including David Nutter

PianoDean

I'm here for the X! Maybe after Expanse is done you can add an extra episode

Troubled Tribble

We couldn't believe that a show this good could exist either in the mid 90s. X-files season 1 was the first season of TV I ever bought on VHS. Or really seen TV being advertised and sold on VHS.

John A

I love this one, To answer your question, I do like Tooms more then Squeeze,. But Squeeze had established Eugene Victor Tooms character, which Tooms did not have to do. This was a perfect epoxide. I find nothing wrong with it. Dialog, cinematography and acting were great I do remember the X-Files growing in popularity, fair quickly in the first season.

Banes

I agree that Tooms is better. Squeeze is awesome - but Tooms breaks the normal episode formula and feels more unpredictable.

Banes

They did shut down the X-Files...on the streaming platform I was watching on. Made me want to feast on their livers. Glad my dvd set arrived just in time to watch this one along wit' yuz.

River Acheron

I dunno if you have Hulu but it's still available there. For how much longer, I dunno since Disney is consolidating.

River Acheron

Fantastic sequel to an already fantastic episode. Which one is better isn't important to me, because at that stage of quality it's whatever one I'm in the mood for. :D (although Tooms has better cinematography and direction)

Ryan Caulfield

Ooh, good to know. I am in Canada and I was watching through Amazon Prime, but now it seems I have to shift to Disney+. Good that I already subscribe to that I guess.

WEB

Being that its a Fox show, Disney is the owner of X-Files now so presumably Disney+ (Hulu in the states) is where it'll always be

Ca$hWednesday

Nothing in this episode beats the visual of Toombs coming through the wall in Squeeze. Personally I like this episode is better overall.

Scarpad’s Domain

there's another ep next season thats on this level. Can't wait

Collin Freeman

I have been watching X-Files on Pluto TV, which is free, but it has commercials. Fortunately, the commercials come at all the right breaks and not randomly.

Mel Schleming

As long as it's gonna take to get through the whole series at this pace, and as tempting as it is to want to binge (I get it, believe me) I feel like the pacing is working as-is right now, The Anticipation is a fun tantalizing feature of it :p hopefully for you as well as for us. Nothing much else to add, watching your enthusiasm and joy in discovering this is a beautiful bright spot in an otherwise mostly gray era <3

Badmiral Burgess

I think I like this one more than squeeze. Both are good but I liked the story on this one and the ending climax was great. Side note for Alex I can 100% believe that a 90s show is this good because 90s and 2000s have the best TV shows and movie production and writing!

David Kirk

This series was a big hit from the beginning. EVERYONE was watching it and talking about it. It was so different from other shows with such great writing and acting.

Paul

This is my preferred episode over the two, for sure. But like Josh I still think Squeeze is a good episode too, but this one has the Scully and Fox car scene, so it wins by default even if the rest was average. And I have to say, if Scully gave me Root Beer OR Iced Tea, it's love.

Paul

There's multiple even better imo.

Paul

For atmospheric horror agreed, however in this episode, Tooms crawling fast covered in bile through that duct chasing after Mulder, pure horror for me. I hate the idea of being chased when in a confined space.

Paul

Still available on Pluto TV for me

Paul

I'd prefer they keep the one episode a week pace. Avoids burnout and means we'll have x-files for almost 4 more years.

Paul

Agreed with Tyranusfan, Supernatural was in no way trying to be a parody, it had some humor here and there but was its own serious rendition of supernatural exploration, inspired for sure by x-files.

Scribe31oz

In the 90s this show, TNG, DS9, Babylon 5 were sheer brilliance, they worked with small budgets so the storytelling had to be good. Btw, modern shipping beyond the Trek stuff back in the day, started with this show.

Adin

They were cooking hard with this one 🔥

The reason why Mulder is such a good hero is because he refuses to compromise on truth or authenticity. He's not going to lie to the court in order to manipulate them into doing what he wants. He's going to be authentic even if he knows he'll hang for it. That's the definition of integrity and principle. That's why he said he can respect Scully if she refused to work on the case because she didn't believe in it. If she did that, she would be acting truthfully from her own authentic beliefs, and standing on her own principles. But as Mulder said, if she DID believe that what they were doing was right, but was afraid to do the right thing because she doesn't want to get in trouble with the bureau, then she's being inauthentic. She'd be compromising her own principles, and the truth of her own beliefs out of pressure and fear. And that's exactly what Mulder fights against. The world would be a much better place if we all had the courage to be like Mulder and be authentic no matter what. Unfortunately, as we see here, people learn quickly that if they don't conform to expectations, and instead try to stick their neck out for the truth, they're inviting to have their neck chopped off. So most people hide much of their true selves, beliefs, and feelings out of fear, which just makes the false conformity problem worse. Maybe the purpose of neurodivergent people is to force authenticity on society since most of them CAN'T conform to the norm? Get enough exceptions to the norm, and the "norm" gets exposed as never having been really normal at all, making it easier for others to be authentic.

BN13

I was under the impression that this one is considered a classic and a fan favorite by most fans, while Squeeze never reached that level of infamy.

Tim Nikiforovs

maybe that could be an option for the bridge crew. Either start a new series after Expanse, or go to 2 XF eps a week

Tim Nikiforovs

I had a laugh at the scene where the wife is telling the guy that she's going to watch TV in bed and he's just like ".........ok". Girl wanted to get laid and she ended up plunging a toilet because she married a clueless dork🤣. Between this and Squeeze, I definitely feel like Squeeze leaned more into the horror aspect. The escalator lair scene is pretty disturbing, but that's about it, and even that has only a fraction the impact I remember as a kid. Still, lot of great character moments between Mulder and Scully. Also new asshole boss introduced? I don't know if I'm mixing it up with something else, or my memory is just shit, but for some reason I could have swore Tooms last victim was the old detective. That would have been a neat twist IMO. This guy has been tracking Tooms for 60 years, through 3 murder sprees, and he ends up being the last victim, but in the process giving Mulder the opportunity to put the guy down for good.

Zerocooleo

I am impressed that Alex and Josh have committed to watching one episode per week the way we did back in the 90's, some marriages don't last that long. As to why they want to reign in Mulder well he is not a team player, he threatens to whistleblower with the truth, he is only there for the aliens and to find his sister, and he does not respect compartmentalization. Mulder is a rock star and they all know it, he gets into restricted facilities he is too good!

Bantha Fodder

I keep trying behind on your xfiles reviews. But I’ll stairs get caught up. Really enjoying this because I’ve forgotten most of the x file episodes. I’m enjoying the trek journey because I DO remember all of those.

HS

It's the Mandela effect, I remember watching that ending also.......kidding. I'm glad he survived tho, but also would you really want to eat the liver of an 80+ year old man? Dude's tryin to hibernate for 30 years, he needs something a little more fresh. 😄

HS

This is the better episode over Tooms, for the car scene alone.

Loot Narsbaar

I don't want anyone to burn out, and 3 Treks and one X File per week, is a lot to keep with

Loot Narsbaar

I don't know if any show has benefitted from being upgraded to blu ray quality more than this. I wonder if it would hit as hard on VHS. It just looks way too good for 1993.
