In the two-part pilot episode, after Serenity lands at the Eavesdown Docks on Persephone, Kaylee tells Mal that they need to buy a new compression coil. She said "If it busts, we're drifting." She brings it up again in a subsequent episode. The catalyzer that blew in this episode is a part on the compression coil. Mal should have heeded her advice. It was common in Joss Whedon shows for seeds to be planted that would bear fruit later in the season. The fact that the compression coil problem was mentioned in the pilot suggests that the concept for "Out of Gas" was conceived before the series was even approved by the network.

Definitely the best episode so far in my opinion. Tim Minear is one of my favorite tv writer apart from Joss Whedon himself from “Mutant Enemy”, the creative crew behind Buffy, Angel and Firefly.

Tubi is dropping Firefly so I’ll have to start watching the cut version after this episode. This is my favorite episode. This episode and some others make you question why Fox didn’t let this show catch on. Arrested Development’s cancellation confirmed that Fox didn’t understand when they had something really good on their hands and to let them build an audience. Oh well.
