Cordelia is essentially the same shallow popular girl that Buffy used to be before she was chosen as the Slayer. (This can be seen in the 1992 Buffy movie that was her origin story in a slightly different universe.) Maybe that’s why she has a modicum of sympathy for Cordelia.

I am hoping that you continue into Season 2 to see if you start to enjoy the show more.

Buffy Season 1 is definitely rough. It's basically the outline of a show and not much more. The budget is nonexistent and the stories are pretty simple, but these one off plots do have a bit of deceptive thematic depth to them and occasionally nice character beats/setup. Season 2 onward is just better on every level: increasing production values, an engaging ongoing story, lots of big twists/surprises, massive character development, engaging and layered new characters, deep themes, and big emotions. There are still a few Season 1 holdover type episodes, but they really fade away in Season 2. Buffy Season 5, for example, feels like a completely different show compared to Season 1. The level of confidence and sophistication will spin your heads in awe. It is worth noting that, as engaging as many of the show's plots can be (looking at you Season 5), Buffy grows into a very character and theme driven show. You'll rarely see Breaking Bad caliber plotting, but few if any shows can match Buffy's lovable yet multi-layered characters, long term foreshadowing/setup, and deep-cut themes. You will be STUNNED at how far the show takes these (and other) characters. You guys are fun to watch and I think the show will grow to really surprise and engage you both. I highly recommend you continue. Consider my sub a vote for more Buffy (although I'm also here for your Trek journey -- can't wait for the movies, TNG, and DS9).
