You'll see a lot of the Holodeck (Rec Room) on TNG and the other shows. It appears to malfunction frequently.

This episode presents two technologies that'll be treated as new and innovative later, and I think my headcannon is that they aren't exactly the same technologies, or are more primative. For example, the food synthesizers I don't think just create food here, but in my head they are more like an old automat, where it just beams food/ingredients from the ships storage via transporters, assembling ingredients into meals when necessary, rather than just building food out of any old matter. And when the ship stores are low, the best it can do is food cubes, which I think are the equivalent of the gloop in the Matrix movies i.e, "Everything the body needs." But I think the way this episode introduces technology that doesn't mesh with later lore is one reason why TAS is treated as murky as far a canon goes.
