The sailing ship Ajax, launched in 1767 at the Plymouth shipyards, represents one of the symbols of British maritime power in the 18th century. This third-rate ship, armed with 74 cannons, played a significant role in numerous conflicts. During the American War of Independence, the Ajax was engaged in various missions both in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. One of the most important military events in which it participated was the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, where it contributed to the British victory against the French fleet. After decades of service, the Ajax was decommissioned and demolished in 1816, marking the end of a long and valiant career.
