Now that I've kickstarted Patreon, it's time for a contest! Next month there will be an opportunity to get picked for a YCH. •Extra info•

The winner of this contest will receive this fluffy, yet menacing, kobold! She is a runic artificer who has found a way to grind down runic-infused ruins into a powerful dust. She can use the dust to conjure up temporary items, such as stepping stones that stay in the air, or even weapons and shields. The more complicated the item is, the longer it takes to conjure. She stores her runic dust in a hollow egg shell, which fits into a safe metal container on her tail.

In order to participate, you must answer the prompt:Why does she store her runic dust in an egg shell?Come up with a silly, weird or logical lore explanation.

Submit your entry in the comments before the end of May!I will pick the winner after that date.

Rules:•  There is no correct answer! Just come up with something you think would fit.•  Just a few words is enough, unless you'd like to explain your idea further.•  Only one entry per person•  My TOS contest prize section applies to this design

Either the funniest, weirdest or most interesting idea will win!

The life energy of the egg shell is essential in preserving the magic of the runic dust without it dissipating over time. The eggshell feels the warmth of the dust inside of it, and retains its natural state.

When I was a child I remember reading a book about magic and wizardry that supposedly contained recipes for magic stuff. One of the things I remember the most was an invisibility ring that required a Roc's egg (A giant bird monster). So I'm going to guess that's what it is, and it helps imbue the dust with magic n.n

I imagine the reasons for using the egg are not exclusive to an egg. In theory you could make a really effective container out of glass or other material but most runic artificers still use eggs because its easier to make. Kinda like a trick that is passed down among crafts men, you could buy the expensive tool but why when you can use this tool you already have but in a new way.

nightstar6

The eggs interior is smooth, no places for the dust to get stuck. The small hole is to keep light out while still being able to access the dust.

In an emergency, the egg can be used as a makeshift bomb. Throw an egg full of rune dust on someone and they will be covered easily. What that actually causes depends of the rune dust. Its a last resort sort of move

KingWiggler

I'd imagine the egg is from her clan's traditions. After she was born, the fragments of her egg were gathered and put back together with a resin made from the sap of the giant tree above their cave. Whenever a kobold comes of age, the egg is given to them and the clan's shaman imbues it with an enchantment to assist them with the job they wish to pursue; In her case, she chose to be an artificer, so the egg was inscribed with runes and enchantments made specifically to preserve any components or act as a crucible to mix reagents

The egg looks quite hard and strong, so I imagine it’s a really good container. Natural and durable, plus it keeps it safe from the environment.

Grinding down infused ruins sounds like a very volatile practice; As if it were both severely dangerous and outlawed. A practice akin to that of a witch. The egg is both for concealing this runic dust, and for preventing unwanted interactions with the outside world. Pure gold is likely highly resistant to runic powers, so a golden egg casing is a rather safe choice, and would even remain inconspicuous as she seems to wear other gold accessories along with it <3

I think the Egg would just be a good Shaker. Plus anyone looking at it would be a bit confused if they tried to nab it without really understanding what it was for. In case of emergency, smashing the entire egg could be a very good way to Clear the away, build a bunker, or make something to defend themselves with! :3

As the helmet protects the mind from the universe. The egg shell does the opposite, it protects the universe from the mind. Rune dust contains the mindless ramblings of an old god who still clings to being a point of order. The egg shell is a paradox, maintaining a state of being neither dead nor alive is an object that resists their order. Thus within the shell the old god’s anthem of iniquity is silenced. Protecting the universe from its mind.

It serves several purposes. The shell is a protective layer of the dust from the outside world. It protects her from accidentally using it on herself, or others unwittingly having it used on them unless the bold purposefully triggers it. I bet there is some dragon-based lore on like, "dragons like eggs and like to hoard," and there's some mix of dragon/kobold tradition instinct-based need to keep an egg (their valuable item) as close to them as possible, and for the bold that representational thing of value is the runic dust, which is kept in the valuable egg. Hoard the eggs, hoard the dust! The magic dust, a little for you, a little for me~ Also, usually creatures know better than to steal eggs from a kobold, that seems like the easiest way to trigger a bold's wrath, and you never know when there's a dragon friend around the corner.... Yet on the opposite side of the coin... it would be kinda funny if the egg, as like a very last resort type situation, can be used as a splash potion/smoke bomb-type scenario, as like a means of emergency escape. It would mean losing the egg, or maybe it has their own way of returning back to them or being used in that way where they don't fully lose the egg. But basically the egg can break in two and release *all* the dust in an emergency scenario.

Why she store the runes dust in an egg shell? Simple reason. An egg is a source of life as it base, containing a chicken to be born. By reusing the egg shell, she hope to infuse her runic dust with life force, to make her spells stronger, or summon creatures with a stronger aura, and that would feel like she is their mother due to the nature of an egg, reinforcing bounds with familiar and summons, making them even more likely to follow her very whim.

A Sentient Cookie

I'd imagine storing that type of magical element in an egg would keep the contents safe from any outside elements, and could probably aid in keeping the dust from reacting with other materials and causing an unfortunate accident. Also, it can work as a great deterrent for the average person who isn't knowledgeable of Runic Dust, aside from other Artificers or people who know Kobold customs. I'd imagine asking a Kobold why they carry eggs with them could be viewed as an incredibly sensitive topic, something that only those who've studied them or are themselves Kobolds know. Plus, the thought of someone grabbing the egg and messing around with the contents could lead to explosive egg nukes.

Cipher Isn't Sane

She keeps the runic dust in an egg because its the least suspicious item that a kobold can get away with holding. Or she just accidently said one time "Runegg" instead of "Runic" and she had to make her dust containers eggs from that point forward, also cause dust and sand type substances are hard to store in regular boxes, you end up leaving some behind when trying to empty it, it gets stuck in the corners and its a whole hassle - but with egg, smoooooth surfaces, no corners or places for the dust to get stuck. Also Also, ovals are scientifically the best object to hold as its the least strenuous to hold and if they drop, they won't roll away easily.

Its so neat to see everyone's reasoning behind using an egg. Even the few ideas that similar are explained in different ways, focusing on a different element of the same idea.

i agree! it was a surprise to see so many unique and fitting ideas, it'll definitely be a challenge to pick a winner 😅

This kobold hails from a tribe situated on the outskirts of a mountain range. The tribe is not native to this region, and have emigrated to this mountain range after escaping their harsh indentured servitudes in a dragon's lair. These mountains are special, since they house a particular variety of wyvern creatures who produce pink nearly unbreakable scaled eggs. These wyverns were essential to the development of their new settlement, with uses in hunting, manual labour and transportation. But as a way of not repeating the mistakes of the past, the kobolds did not treat the wyverns with cruelty and instead formed something of a symbiosis with them. The wyverns are not pets or slaves, they live alongside the kobolds as something else, treating each other with respect. The symbol of this symbiosis, and the very journey to the mountain range was the pink-shelled egg of these wyverns. As a kobold of this tribe comes of age they are given their own wyvern egg to use as they see fit, and to always care for. And since they are so hard to break they are often used to store valuables. This kobold may be far from home, but she still holds tight to her egg, and keeps her runic dust within it because of the eggs unbreakable properties and cultural significance.

Eggs are plentiful if they need replaced and the size of the shell is easy to hold and shake out accurate amounts. For her it's also a convenient thing to use her gold container for, she prizes the container as an heirloom of her tribe which she left behind not too long ago. It reminds her of home and of her determination to strike out on her own and seek independence

Marrotok

the reason she uses an egg is that it is her own egg which she restored and which is the only thing which can hold the trough her own magic produced and very fleeting power over a longer time

From the dawn of time eggs were being produced in this world. They have slowly begun to evolve over time to become stronger and sturdier. Compared to a glass bottle an egg depending on who made it is like a ball of steel. She has managed to use many techniques passed down generation to generation. On where to find the unique creatures that lay the eggs and how to properly transform the eggs into Vessels for the potions. Making them the ultimate container for the elixirs and potions. But besides the eggs being strong and sturdy they provide many different things. They allow spells to easily be written on the sides to be able to improve the capability of the potion. But the eggs have the classic ability of increasing an objects longevity. They can last much longer then her competitors potions. Now in combat they can be used very well for offensive potions. As an egg the users can easily roll it down a small hill. Unlike a glass potion where it isn’t smoothly shaped and it can make a loud clanking noise due to the glass. Then overall she can explain to any buyers that the potions are also easy to differentiate because the eggs absorb the potions coloring to a degree, that they can easily be rolled to people. Then they are also easier to stack in storage compared to her competitors. Then that the eggs are also easy to drink despite the hard shell. Then how the offensive or explosive potions will explode when the time is right despite the hard shell. So no accidental potion breaking or usage. In the end the eggs provide many built in bonuses that help whoever bought the egg. Then helps her with storage due to how they are shaped.
