I guess that’s her sort of comeback to Singer saying that she’ll die in the “old” world instead of living another day in the “new”. The real question is how does it feel that he and his pack mates will die slow and painfully in the “old” world?

Anxious Singer appears to have gotten away. As much as I don't like the idea of Swift not killing this fellow, she's right. The other pack view so much as weakness, and by Singer's account, he'd think him dead. He doesn't have much time left, I doubt he'll become a problem down the line. Glad Scree is back on the team. I like Scree.

Damn, that's cold. And I couldn't agree more with her; killing him quick would be a mercy killing. Besides, if Singer is taken care of quickly, Keen could be a fairly easy source of meat since he'll live a bit longer and that will delay decay. Unless other scavengers get to him first or they have to run from the rest of the pack, that is.

And so he runs, tail between his legs. And yep. Knew it. It would be more merciful to kill him, as his pack certainly won’t come to help, and with that neck wound and leg wound, he’ll die slowly without them. His pack is not the same as Swift.

Swift’s pack is exactly like theirs, that’s why Seral’s dad was left to die like they tried to do with Red, and why Swift was evacuating Red and their pups without the rest of the pack with them.

They should have chased down and maimed singer too. I’m going to assume they name themselves after traits. So swift is fast, I’m assuming. Should have grabbed singer. Minus two pack members, the balance of power shifts.

That's actually pretty dark. Because in that scene with young seral missing his dad, his father might not even be dead. He might just be a quarter of a mile away, lying in the grass with a broken back. And he simply considered dead because he's functionally not useful anymore..... and even though he's lying there still very much alive, young Seral is not allowed to go over and see him or say goodbye, he just never came back from the hunt I guess.

I actually had forgotten his leg is lame. Even if his pack comes for him, he’ll never recover and his pack won’t take on dead weight.

Then I believe he got frustrated with Red on page 284 because he makes him slowly realize what was actually happening during the time of his flashback.

No time, Seral is after the pups with little to no interference and he has a raven with him to add bird’s eye view with his own natural tracking abilities.

Yeah, but they don’t know that. We only know because we are the reader. But also, I don’t think seral is going to kill the cubs. He hasn’t had a lot of character development. But he doesn’t strike me as vicious or cruel. The fact he didn’t kill red when he had the chance shows he still cares and isn’t a complete traitor.

I love Scree and all, and as I mentioned earlier, she did know more about what's going on than she let on. But boy I bet Swift is going to be demanding some answers from her soon.

I don't think so. Singer is heading straight for backup.. or to flee in general. I doubt he has the courage to bloody his teeth himself. Besides look at Singer's tail - thats not a confident posture, if he was going for the pup he tail be higher.

I disagree. Her only plan should be survival. Either kill him to remove a threat. Or leave him maimed to delay pursuers. But don’t let him live as a form of punishment.

Something occurred to me. On page 294 where Scree pushed singer down and turned her back on him to jump keen. I thought this was a terrible idea. But she knows singer, and knows his a coward. And she knows keen, which is why she knew he was a more dangerous threat. Swift should follow Screes advise. She has inside information.

Now I’m wondering if Rask’s decision to let Swift live and implying that there is a place in the woods for her to check out was a mistake. She isn’t as desperate as she used to be just a few pages ago, so the idea of joining a bunch of little prey animals might be getting a little less palatable. Was Swift’s run through the woods the “Incursion” as the title of this chapter suggests?

A broken back will also have a whole lot of other problems like bowel control etc. Plus even moving will cause more damage.

Oh man! I kinda forgot about that too. Rask would get some real blow back from telling the wolf he was suppose to kill, where their home is. I also wonder how big the invading pack is. We never get a clear number. It could be 20-30 strong. Which would still leave swifts 7ish member pack at a major disadvantage.

I was rereading the story and on page 214, they are lamenting the lack of prey and theorizing the forest is full of fat prey.

I was thinking by lack of prey they meant that the bison herds had traveled more towards the new pack’s side, but then Singer implied that food was scarce for them too.

yeah, they said the bison are all on the other packs side. but they also theorized that the bear stories that kept them out of the forest kept others out too. and thst their could be lots of juicy prey in there. rask just confirmed her belief. so! this doesnt bold well for sanctuary, or rasks future with sanctuary.
