Alot of Soldiers wanted to go on the patrol because they were clerks, mail men, supply, or just drivers. Important roles. But they wanted to fight. That's why they volunteered to go .

Btw. Lutenant Jones. He is the son of Tom Hanks.

Hey! Guys! I have a membership but again, everything’s locked up. Im Sorry. I don’t know where to ask.

They're laughing because it's not Bastogne, and it's meant to also juxtapose the reaction of those who weren't there (Lt Jones and Webster). I just noticed that in the shower scene, Cobb has a fresh uniform... I wonder if that's meant to indicate what an a-hole he is portrayed as. SSG Martin is so upset with Webster because he knows that Webster was the reason Martin is leading the patrol, and SSG Malarkey is sitting it out. Webster talked them into letting Liebgott out of the patrol because Liebgott kept commenting about Webster trying to get out of everything (i.e., staying at the hospital instead of escaping and joining them at Bastogne). Notice how Winters promoted Jones from 2nd lieutenant to 1st lieutenant in front of everyone. Sobel promoted Winters to 1st Lieutenant out behind the barracks where no one could see.
